Blue Buffalo Dog Food 1

I have 3 border collies on this food, 2 on senior and 1 on adult. The dog on adult developed diahrea, and vomitting. He became lethargic. Vet found nothing but stomach irritation. I took him off this food and put him on my own rice and ground meat mixture to rest his stomach and he is back to his active, funny self. He was refusing the food and I urged him to eat it, I feel terrible that I didn't listen to him.

It is now September and the older dogs that were on the senior formula also developed severe diahrea. I also put them on a home made dog food to rest them and now all are doing fine. We found another kibble that they can tollerate and all is well. This food is to high in protien.

Did you try different flavors in the adult kind? I have known dogs who could eat chicken, but beef would irritate their stomachs.

I did not, shortly after my other 2 dogs that were on senior also became sick. What a mess!! I was afraid that this was the beginning of another recall, I'm still skeptical. I switched them to a food with sources only from the US and no gluten.

For the record, the only Blue Buffalo ingredient sourced outside the US is their New Zealand Lamb, but even that New Zealand lamb is processed by a USDA certified facility. And all Blue products are corn, wheat, soy, gluten, vegetable protein, and byproduct free.

And I disagree that Blue was "too high in protein" for your dogs. Dogs are carnivores. You can't give a healthy carnivore too much protein. Blue Buffalo just wasn't a good match for your dogs... and that's OK. I LOVE Blue, but I know that there is no one best brand of food that works for every dog.

It sounds like you have a dog with a special needs diet to start with. Just as any other animal, or people with allergies, if you are used to something for so long, ANYTHING else introduced into a diet will cause havoc. I think your home cooking is great, and if you are able to do this, don't change it! Just make sure to add an "All Purpose" daily vitamin to sprinkle into the food. Rice and meats are great but adding blueberries or yams (slowly!) might be an added plus too! Just don't blame a dry food cause honestly I think anybodys tummy is sensitive to change when on a non variable diet! :)
