Pro Plan 5

My little one loves Pro Plan Shredded Blend! I have a 2-year-old Shih Tzu, and she's been on this food since she was about 6 months old. She was previously on Science Diet (simply because that's what the people I got her from fed her), but I switched her because she was allergic to the chicken stuff in it. And thank goodness I did switch her...Science Diet has BY-PRODUCTS in its food! It's supposed to be a high-quality dog food--HA! Anyways, back to Pro Plan. I feed her the Natural Lamb & Rice Formula due to her allergy, and she LOVES the Shredded Blend. It's kinda funny...when I feed her, she picks out all of the lamb meat pieces and leaves the rest of the dry food in her bowl and eats it later. As a dog mommy, I love this food because it's approved by the AAFCO and has no by-products. It's not too pricey, and a 6-lb bag lasts her a month. My little Lulu loves it, and that's all the proof I need!

Are you aware that even in the Lamb and Rice formula, Pro Plan Shredded Blends uses chicken product? Your dog's allergies, if indeed they are chicken related, could come back at any time.

As I just posted in my review above, Pro Plan is the best stuff that Purina makes, and I still wouldn't feed it to any dogs in my care. Corn, wheat, soy, glutens, beet pulp, animal digest, and the rancid fat rendered from waste and scrap meat, including roadkill... there is a lot more to this food than just lamb and rice.

And, for the record, every dog food in America is AAFCO approved... but that doesn't mean anything. AAFCO is merely a collection of pet food company executives, not a real regulatory committee.

Correction--it wasn't the chicken she was allergic to in the Science Diet. Because it was two years ago, I can't recall what exactly it was in the SD food that irritated her allergies, but after consulting my vet, he told me to put her Pro Plan. I've never had a problem since. Here's a question for you, though...since you don't have anything nice to say about Pro Plan, what type of dog food do you use? I don't have time to read through all of the other posts that you have commented on. The way I look at it is this: we humans put crap into our bodies every day. Most of it isn't good for us at all, but it isn't going to kill us. Same thing with my little one. If she likes it and seems to be doing well on it, I'm happy.

P.S. What are your thoughts on Life's Abundance?

Hello, Sara. I feed my dogs a mix of super premium kibbles. I use brands like Blue Buffalo, Wellness, Solid Gold, Prairie, Innova, Orijen, Acana, Evangers, Fromm, and other similar brands. My requirements for a worthwhile pet food are simple, really. Good foods do not contain any corn, wheat, soy, glutens, vegetable proteins, or byproducts. Additionally, I want to see at least two out of the first three ingredients listed be species- specific meats and/or meat meals.

Yes, we put all kinds of crap into our bodies on a daily basis, and we survive... but the way I see it, we are making a conscious choice in doing so. Our pets lack that free will and self determination to make good choices for themselves, and rely upon us to make sound nutritional decisions for them.

With regard to Life's Abundance pet foods, I wrote a pretty telling review on the brand here: http://www.rateitall.com/i-875128-lifes-abundance.aspx
In short, not a worthwhile choice, overall.
