Blue Buffalo Dog Food 5

I gave this food a 5 star rating because it appears to be a good dog food, however, I have not given my dogs this food. I am considering trying this dog food with my Basset Hound puppy (6 months) and two Labrador Retrievers( 1 1/2 yrs, and 3 yrs) , however I am reading so many mixed reviews that I don't know where this food stands. I am torn between this dog food, and Innova EVO. I know the best I can do, is just buy the food and try it for myself, but I would like someone's input on this dog food and how it has worked for their dogs. I live in a small rural area, and the closest retailer for this dog food is 2 hours away, so if I am going to go with this dog food, I am more than likely going to have to buy it in bulk, or more than one bag at a time. I am tired of settling for cheap, low quality dog food because it is easier and more convenient to give to my dogs. I know they deserve better than this, so I am willing to make the change so they can be more healthy, vibrant dogs.

As well I was wondering how this dog food compares to Innova EVO, as they are both highly ranked dog foods. Also, this dog food as I have been reading on the Internet and on the BB's website does not come in large bags of dog food? Am I correct? If one was feeding a Basset Hound puppy, and two adult Labradors, how many bags of food per month would I need to buy to feed my dogs?

Currently, they are on Purina Pro Plan (and yes, I gave this food a terrible rating), I am not proud to say I feed my dogs this, but I know this food is not good for them, and want to change. The Basset Hound puppy eats 2 cups of food, three times a day, as he gets older, we are going to be cutting out his lunch meal, so he will only be eating in the morning and at night. The Labrador Retrievers get two cups twice a day. And, what is the approximate cost per month to feed three dogs? I am just trying to compare this food in terms of price for feeding three dogs per month. As of now, we probably spend $150. I know feeding, "premium" dog food will cost a bit more, but I am willing to afford the cost to feed my dogs a more healthier dog food.

Thanks for anyone's input.

Hi, Amanda. I feed Blue Buffalo, and I love the stuff. I also feed Innova EVO (and the regular Innova dog food, as well) and love THEIR products. But Blue Buffalo is the basis of my peculiar dog diet. I buy a big bag of Blue (and the biggest bag they make is 30 lbs) and smaller bags of several other top-of-the-line foods, and mix them together. Often, Innova products are one of the smaller bags that I use in my mix.

Why do I favor BB foods and use them as the basis of my mixed kibble diet? Because I really, really like the food, and so do my pets. I discovered Blue several years ago, and was intregued by their propaganda. Their claims at lower cooking temperatures, antioxidant abundance, and live probiotics mixed into the foods all captured my attention, as did the fact that their ingredients are all natural and all human grade, and that meat is the first two ingredients in the bag. I refuse to feed my pets a food that contains corn, wheat, soy, glutens, or byproducts, and Blue Buffalo is always free from those five ingredients. Also, to hear the claim that Blue is the only company founded and the only food formulated with a purpose of actively fighting cancer... that was a big deal for me, cancer being the number one killer of dogs in America. I had to try it.

I saw fantastic results in my pets when I began feeding Blue, even though I was switching from another top-echelon brand (Solid Gold, if I remember correctly). My dogs were eating less, pooping less, looking healthier, and having more energy. I also like the fact that they put glucosamine in every bag, as all of my critters are older. Compared to the quantities of Pro Plan your dogs are eating, you can expext them to eat around a third less of the Blue Buffalo, and still get MORE nutrition.

Comparing Blue Buffalo to Innova Evo is difficult. The normal Blue Buffalo product is a top-of-the-line dry dog food, including non-allergenic grain-based carbohydrates (primarily whole grain brown rice) and with protein content around 25% (some variety between formulas. Innova Evo, on the other hand, is one of the high protein/grain free foods, with 45% protein and all carbohydrates sourced from ingredients like potato and sweet potato. I don't necessarily feel that this type of food is necessary for daily feeding, but many do, and with good results. Other comparisons between the two are firmly in favor of Blue Buffalo... the 30 lb bag of Blue Buffalo Adult Chicken and Rice runs around $46. The biggest bag of Innova Evo is 28 lbs, and it can run as much as $20 more per bag than a slightly bigger bag of BB.

In all, I think BB is a better choice, unless you MUST feed a high protein food... but even if you were to choose to go that route, Blue makes a food of that class, Blue Buffalo Wilderness, which is awesome.

Thank you so much! I am going to the city this weekend, and hope to pick up a bag of Blue Buffalo to try with my dogs. I hope all goes well! From what I have been reading, transitioning slow with this food is key to success, since there is a lot of "toxins" and build up from all the bad dog food that needs to well...come out.

I know I can get this dog food at these two pet stores in Regina, Sk

Does any more mainstream dog stores carry this brand like Petcetera, Petland?

Petco and Petsmart carry Blue Buffalo - I have heard that Tractor Supply also carry Blue. Remember it does take time for your dogs to transition, I think younger dogs transition the easiest or in the shortest amount of time. Within 2-6 months you will see a very healthy coat on your dog.
There are alot of good foods out there, I use Blue and my dogs (4) love it and have done extremely well on it. Choosing a good quality food is the key to your dogs success.
At Petsmart they set up their food (dog and cat) by quality. Quality foods at the front of the store and going to the rear of the store is poor quality. Look and see where Science Diet is and Purina are in location. That tells the story with out any words spoken.
I always encourge people to read the labels and learn, read where the food is made (what country). Read what ingredients are in the food, how labels are misleading. When the word "meat" is used in the ingredients: it means any type of meat - animal companions from shelters, horse - you name it - it could be in there. By-products: dead diseased chickens are used. Just a little effort in gaining knowledge of what you are feeding your dog or cat.
You are one step ahead knowing you're doing the best in caring for your dogs. Good Luck!
