Pro Plan 5

So far, this food has been great for my 11 month-old Corgi. When we got him at 3 months, he was on that Holistic Nutro (very expensive and didn't do well for him). He had soft stools constantly...I thought that was the norm for him, but then I decided to give ProPlan puppy food a try. Well, the gas, loose stools, and occasional vomiting have ceased. So I gave him the ProPlan for the first 6 months, and last month started the slow transition to ProPlan Shredded. He loves the stuff. I feed him much less of it, he doesn't poop a ton, and he really enjoys it. He actually picks the larger pieces out and runs off with them. If anyone has had a Corgi, you know that they are little vacuums when it comes to food. This is the first food/treat that has made him slow down and savor it. Instead of 1.5 minutes (I timed it) to eat his cup of food at mealtimes, it takes him about 5 minutes (which leaves time for me to do some cleanup in the kitchen before he starts his puppy-rampages through the house).

Definitely going to keep him on it as long as he is tolerating it. As for the hate speech out there. I say go with your gut. Trust your own resources and not some self-proclaimed expert and feed your animal what they seem to like and what meets the industry standards. Each dog is different. My dog didn't do well on the Nutro, but did great on this. He is healthy, a perfect weight, happy, and has no food allergies. My previous dog lived off of cheap dog food and lived to be a happy, healthy 20 years.

Oh and by the way, I talked to my vet and she said that the mid-priced foods are fine. She sees nothing wrong with ProPlan and it's up to your individual dog as to whether they tolerate a specific food. Sometimes the expensive organic stuff is not good for certain dogs...so those Organo-nazi's out there can just chill. :)

P.S. read the other reviews of some of these "experts;" some of them have nothing better to do than spew hate on forums and throw their weight around.

you seem to have many mistaken ideas about pet foods. First and foremost, NONE of the Nutro foods are organic. Fery few dog foods are. Also, none of the Nutro foods list corn as the first ingredient. Regardless of the Nutro product line, whether Max, Natural Choice, or Ultra, and regardless the formula, NONE start with corn. And Nutro foods aren't all that great, anyway. They used to be, but Nutro is now made by a candy company, and you can't trust a candy company to make superior dog food... any more than you can trust a chocolate company to make a good dog food. By the way, Purina is made by Nestle.

And, for the record, many veterinarians know precisely jack squat about dog and cat nutrition. Until very recently, nutrition was not seen as terribly important to our pet's health. Nutrition seminars were taught by food company representatives, and traaditionally, veterinarians learned only what the food companies wanted them to know.

Price often has little to do with pet food quality. Look at the Pro Plan that you love so much... significantly more expensive than the (supposedly) lower quality Purina One. But when you actually read the ingredients in these two foods, the ingredients are VERY similar, some formulas virtually the same. And both contain corn and byproducts, so you're paying for filler and waste. Conversely, Diamond's Kirkland Signature costs about the same as Purina One, but contains more meat, no byproducts, and very little in the way of fillers.

Your dog may be doing well on Pro Plan, to your way of thinking, but ther is much more to great canine health than a firm stool. Pro Plan make dogs have a firm stool because it's packed full of fiber, not because it's full of good nutrition. Do a little research and you'll change your mind about a lot of pet health related topics... and you just might understand why, exactly, Pro Plan is a waste of money, regardless of the texture of the feces it makes.

There is no such food as Nutro Ultra Max Holistic. There is a Nutro Max, and a Nutro Ultra. Nutro Max contains corn. Nutro Ultra doesn't. And again, neither lists corn as the first ingredient (as you stated in your original post), and neither is a truly superior food, let alone oraganic (as you also stated in your original post).

How, exactly, am I trolling a forum? I'm calmly but assertively stating facts that can be proven with minimal independant research. And, for the record, I have been a companion animal nutritional consultant for longer than you've been a client of your current veterinarian, and have been working in animal medicine, health, care, sheltering, and welfare for more than two decades. I have also been attending classes for most of those two plus decades, staying on the cutting edge of nutritional knowledge... not something that most veterinary staff can claim. I actually hold three degrees in Animal Science, one with a specialty in companion animal nutrition, and am going back to school for my final degree. Am I a veterinarian? Nope. But that doesn't discredit me or the information I dispense. It's credible. Look it up.

P.S. spouting vulgarities and insults isn't helping your cause in the least. Denigrating a superior brand of food isn't doing much, either. And no, my dogs do not "shit gold" from feeding Diamond foods. I actually don't feed any Diamond brands, except for a small amount of their Chicken Soup brand on occasion. For the record, a Diamond-manufactured food WAS affected by a contaminated shipment of corn in 2005. The corn had a mold on it producing aflatoxin, and dogs did sicken and die. But the brand affected was NOT the Kirkland Signature brand by Diamond, a line of food that IS corn-free. If you had done the bare minimum of research (as I suggested) you may have found that out prior to posting. And have you any idea how many times Purina foods, including Pro Plan have been recalled? Numerous recalls.

My tone is condescending simply because I am telling you things that you don't want to hear, and providing a factual basis for my arguments. You argue that Pro Plan MUST be a better food, because it creates firm stools. I point out that firm stools can be made with an overabundance of nutritionally void fiber, and that firm stools are not indicative of good health. Open your mind. Enlightenment is a wonderful thing.

Whatever. You probably don't have any friends with that kind of holier-than-thou attitude. I don't want to hear any more of your hatred. Thank you!
