Every time I read about these holdouts, I marvel at the ethos that would make them remain so long in a lost situation. I wonder if any of these men were compensated by Japan when they came home.

Ethos or pathos? The ethics of upholding a soldier's oath or love for a mother country. Perhaps to damned stupid to ask a Japanese speaking tourist if the war ended? Who the hell was he fighting? Could only be his shadow on an uninhabited Island.
