Royal Canin 5

I actually think RC is great food. I have a 5yr old min pin, and when I first got her I was feeding her Pedigree which I now know is terrible food! (I worked at Petco for about 2yrs and my sister is also an assistant manager there.) Her coat was dry and dull. After working there a bit, and getting informed I changed her to RC Mini Adult. Within a couples of weeks I noticed a huge difference! Her coat was beautiful. Shiny and soft. I am now feeding her Natural Balance because RC is too expensive plus Natural Balance is great food and fairly priced. However, I do feed my kitty RC kitten formula and she loves it! Also, my sister recently changed her cat's food from RC Indoor/Outdoor Adult, to RC Adult Light. (one of her kitties is a fatty!) Her overweight kitty has now lost some weight and is as happy as ever. I recommend this food to anyone that can afford it lol!

And, for the people that say the RC specific formulas are bullshit and just a marketing gimmick and saying "Its like if white people and black people eating different types of food.". Shame on you. How can you compare an animal to a human? different dogs have different needs and have atleast one, if not many health related issues that they are prone to depending on the breed. (and this is a fact. just look it up.) For ex, Dachshunds are prone to spinal disc problems and heart disease. Boxers are prone to cardiomyopathy and thyroid and so on and so on. The special formulas are made to insure that your dog(s) (no matter the breed) live a long and healthy life. So please for the people reading this, dont base your judgement on other peoples ignorance!

The problem with the Royal Canin brand is that it is no longer Royal Canin. It's yet another Mars Foods subsidiary. And Mars Foods care no more about your pet's health in the formulation of Royal Canin than they care about YOUR health in the formulation of Snickers bars. Since Mars purchased Royal Canin about two years ago, they have reformulated several times, dropping the quality of the food each time. Most Royal Canin formulas (for dogs OR cats) now contain either corn or wheat, sometimes both. And for these fillers and allergens, they want you to pay top dollar! Is Royal Canin better than Pedigree? Yes, but for how long? After all, Mars owns both brands of dog food, and if the current reformulation trend continues and quality continues to drop, it's only a matter of time before Royal Canin is the same quality as Pedigree.

Finally, regarding the different formulas... ok, so lets assume that a German Shepherd and a Labrador Retriever DO need different nutrition. Now, read the ingredients in those two Royal Canin formulas. Almost EXACTLY the same. They flip the order in that some ingredients are listed, but otherwise, not too much difference. Really, the biggest differences are the shapes of the kibble and the pictures on the bag. And the pictures on the bag are what really matter... someone walks down the Royal Canin aisle at Petco, sees a picture of their dog (or cat) on a bag, and thinks "My pet looks just like that, that must be the food I should be feeding!" It's marketing, plain and simple.

Agreed, it's marketing. If my dog's breed is prone to bone or joint problems, I will supplement with a glucosamine/chondroitin product. Not purchase a bag of filler marketed for that specific breed with little difference from one "breed specific formula" to the next. I can't believe people would impulsively buy a bag of Royal Canin for their Shih-Tzu just because their dog is a Shih-Tzu. It is 100% marketing, but sadly it works.
