Nuvaring

reviewed by daydreamer26

"the Ring" is a new Birth Control method that is becoming increasingly more popular. it is a small plastic ring containing a low dose of hormones that steadily release in the vagina, where it stays for 3 wks. at a time. I know women are using it and would want to see it on the Birth Control Method Rating list!!

Nuvaring 1

I am 26 have been on Nuva Ring for about 5 years. When I first started it there were no major side effects except my period went from almost gone on Ortho-Tri Cyclen to about 3 days long after I switched to NuvaRing. I also had the massive discharge problem but it didn't really bother me that much. I started getting chronic yeast infections about 3 years ago (like, every 3 months I had one). My problems really began at the beginning of this year though. I'm have disgusting breakouts (I never had more than a zit or two), bleeding after sex, dryness, and discomfort during sex (all things experience by others using NuvaRing according to message boards like this one). I went to the doctor thinking I might have endometriosis (my mom had it). He didn't find anything on the ultrasound and told me to stay on the Nuvaring and start stacking (it means, not taking a break after the 3rd week but reinserting a new ring). I was miserable the first month - headaches, abdominal pain, leg pains, anxiety, bleeding for two weeks straight. I emailed him after the first month saying I couldn't take it anymore, I was miserable and I was scared because NuvaRing isn't approved by the FDA to be taken in the manner he prescribed, and he didn't even know if I had endometriosis to justify taking NuvaRing continuously. He replied that OB/GYNs often have to prescribe meds that aren't necessarily approved by FDA but if I felt uncomfortable he would switch me back to Ortho-Tri Cyclen. I have an HMO, so by the time I got his response a week later, only a few symptoms remained and I felt like a jerk trying to tell my doctor what to do. So, I've continued stacking for a total of about 4 months. I've had a UTI and believe I am in the beginnings of another one, have been bleeding straight for 6 weeks, am still dry, irritated that I'm 26 and have to use lube with my Boyfriend, and I have no idea if I'm bleeding after sex because I'm bleeding all the time!! I'm taking it out tomorrow, filling the Ortho Tri Cyclen and calling the ring quits. The feedback on here REALLY helps! I hope this has been the cause of my problems and that my body will adjust back soon.

*****UPDATE*****

I could not be happier being off the Nuva Ring for the last three weeks. I have not been bleeding - there were a few days of very light spotting which is an amazing improvement. My sex drive is back, my mood is better, my face is clear, no bleeding/discomfort/dryness/burning during intercourse, no unexpected breakthrough bleeding for an unknown length of time, no UTIs, no yeast infections! It's fabulous. Never going back, EVER. Should have listened to my gut feeling 4-5 months ago and switched immediately. I cannot tell you how good it feels to have a normal sex life/vaginal health again! Taking the pill every day is not the most convienent thing - but it's 150% worth it to not be in the misery I was having on the Ring. Think about these reviews if you're thinking about the Ring - they're honest experiences and your GYN may not know the Ring is the problem for your health concerns. If you decide on taking it, please watch out for the symptoms myself and others have experienced so you can get off it ASAP!

I just wanted to tell you that no matter what your doctor says about you not having endometriosis, don't listen. You know your body better than anyone else does and let me tell you I've been through hell with that disease. My doctor put me through many ultrasounds saying that I did not have it and it wasn't until he had to cut me open that he found it. Please take action as soon as possible because this disease will ruin your life if indeed you do have it!

Thanks so much for your advice!

I have been off Nuva Ring for two weeks now and my symptoms are SO much better. No vaginal dryness or discomfort/pain/burning during sex - it just feels much healthier down there. I actually even realized once I got off the miserable stuff that I had lost my sex drive. I just thought I was too stressed/busy.

I am having pain with bowel movements while on my period, which can be symptomatic of endometriosis. I plan on having a new doctor test me again when I change my insurance from KAISER. I WILL push for a laproscopy if they can't find anything via ultrasound again. I also know from working in hospitals for so long that you have to speak up if things aren't right - even if that labels you as "difficult" patient. I don't believe in being rude or screaming, yelling, or cursing - but I know to push for what you want when it comes to medical issues.

Still, though, the NuvaRing was causing issues in and of itself that aren't related to whether I have endometriosis or not. If I have endometriosis and have to continuously take birth control, I will, but it will NEVER, EVER be the Nuva Ring again.

On a side note/rant, I am very disappointed to find women have difficulty getting immediate assistance and accurate advice from GYN doctors when they need it. I was personally very frustrated just trying to get help for the problems Nuva Ring was causing (took 1 month before I could get an appt. to see a doctor, who was a QUACK, and let me leave her office WITHOUT A SINGLE TEST OR CHANGE IN ANYTHING. Then ANOTHER MONTH to see the doctor I mentioned before who had me stay on Nuva Ring for another 3 months before another appointment. That's a total of FIVE months of seeking medical attention and still having NO resolution to my problem and only more misery with all the side effects from "stacking"). They still didn't know what it was - I had to find out on my own by seeking out information and reading MANY, MANY forums like this one. It's no co-incidence my symptoms were identical to others on this forum. The Nuva Ring was bad news for me.

On another side note, I think that Nuva Ring changed their formula over the years and didn't tell the patients or do new clinical trials with a new formula/release new information for potential side effects. I went for years without any problems whatsoever and then things just got progressively worse - chronic yeast infections, UTIs, and, well, you read all the other stuff. That just seems suspicious to me.

Unfortunately, I think the Nuva Ring makes some people VERY miserable with the symptoms I mentioned above and other women have mentioned. Doctors just aren't catching on for whatever reason. Maybe these side effects just aren't evident in enough people to cause concern or to show a pattern.

Why were you looking up Nuva Ring? If you need to be placed on a continuous birth control for endometriosis, I could not recommend you try the ring first. Try Yasmin or Lybrel or anything else first. There's potential for you to be even more miserable with the additional health problems the Ring can cause. Don't risk it with the Ring.
