Travers Stakes

reviewed by irishgit

The Travers Stakes in Saratoga Springs is the oldest major thoroughbred horse race in America. The first Travers took place in 1864 at Saratoga Race Course. The race began when bare-knuckles boxing champion and US congressman, John Morrissey held a four-day meeting at Horse Haven. The meeting was so successful it was decided to build a racetrack right across the street.

Travers Stakes 4

The oldest race in America has had its share of great races and an occasional scandal as well. Run at Saratoga Springs, one of the most beautiful tracks on the continent, the race is the highlight of the season there, and is sometimes called the Midsummer Derby. Among the horses that have won it is the great Man o' War in 1920.

Here is an epic race, a head to head, wire to wire duel by Jaipur and Ridan in 1962, which is still regarded as one of the greatest races of all time.
