Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia, a self-governing region in Spain. Located in the northeast on the Mediterranean coast, Barcelona sits at the mouths of the Llobregat and Besos Rivers. Barcelona was the center of the anarchist movement during the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) and as a result suffered a period of political and cultural repression that lasted until the 1970s. Barcelona now boasts a population of 1.5 million residents, and was the site of the 1992 summer Olympics.
