James Knox Polk (1845-1849) 3

By many accounts a narrow minded and difficult man in personal life, he was a competent administrator, and left behind a lasting legacy in
American policy - Manifest Destiny.

Judged in the context of the time, his foreign policies, particularly the war with Mexico are more defensible than some might see them today.

Oh boy, you really made me happy! You have no idea how grateful I feel for learning the word "defensible". English is not my native language, and this precious piece of vocabulary managed to escape my attention so far. For months I was looking for an adjective that fits my opinion on Mr. Polk's conduct better than "appropriate on the whole". "Defensible" is the word that fits exactly. Thanks a lot for making me revel in the joy of "heureka!". It's one of the greatest feelings that I know.
