I cannot stand most shows from this era, but Jack Benny was extremely funny. He actually had the confidence and generosity to play the straight man most of the time, although he could get a laugh using just his eyebrows. This was so much better than almost anything I've seen from that decade, so not everybody back then was as lame as they seem.
