Bjorn Borg 4

Granted an impressive player, incredible resolve an concentration. But his game was limited and had he stayed on the tour longer I think he would have been beaten by younger players more and more. In my opinion, he is slightly overrated because, since he retired early, he never had to face a mounting generation of new players.

Let's put this mounting generation of new players in perspective. Ivan Lendl faced Borg one time in 1981. Borg defeated him at the French Open. At that point, Lendl was in his 4th year. Over the next 13 years (after Borg retired), he won two Australian, three French, and three US Opens. He also held the all-time record for weeks at #1, until the record was broken by Sampras in 1999. Ivan Lendl did this against this "new generation", despite the fact that he could not stay on the court with Bjorn Borg. Had Borg not retired, he would have remained the dominate player througout the 1980's.
