The greatest racehorse there has ever been. The pinnacle of breeding, this horse had a 3yo career like no other, guineas, derby, eclipse, juddemont, irish champion stakes and of course the arc.A machine who when really tested showed he had the guts to match his undoubted class.A magnificent specimen, his huge stride, along with his superior cruising speed enabled him to win top class races with ease.Look at his eclipse win when the race wasn,t run to suit,he pulls away again when rip van winkle(aiden o brien says the most naturally gifted horse he has ever had)comes at him.Out of every racehorse that i,ve ever had the pleasure to see only the mighty secretariat could possibly be his equal

Great, knowledgeable owner/managers. The board flexibility gives me use of indoor as well as great trails for the lowest board that I could find anywhere!

Screw the Kentucky Derby (often referred to as most exciting 2 minutes in sports), Siena's biannual bareback race around the medieval town square has got to be the gold standard in adrenaline and comes in at around a minute-thirty. It marries a fierce and almost mafia-like rivalry between different districts of this small Italian city (called Contrade) with throngs of excited people packed tight and close to the thunder of the hooves.

Just hours prior to the race, jockeys discover their horse assignments by lottery, and between rituals and traditions, down to the last moments before the race, clandestine meetings take place to plan strategic alliances and animosities.

The race itself invites danger in its purest form: Bareback around a tight circuit, a horse can win the race even if the jockey is trampled in the process.

Italians are known for their pride and their passion, and the Palio is a testament to that fact and then some. The buildup and the crowded atmosphere guarantees a thrill you just can't get through opera glasses from the stands while sipping a mint julep.

The oldest race in America has had its share of great races and an occasional scandal as well. Run at Saratoga Springs, one of the most beautiful tracks on the continent, the race is the highlight of the season there, and is sometimes called the Midsummer Derby. Among the horses that have won it is the great Man o' War in 1920.

Here is an epic race, a head to head, wire to wire duel by Jaipur and Ridan in 1962, which is still regarded as one of the greatest races of all time.

This is probably the most important race for older horses in North America and one that has had more than its share of drama. The Seabisquit story is well known, and I won't repeat it here, largely because I think it is one of the most overtold and overblown legends in racing.

Some great horses have won this including Affirmed, and the great hard knocking John Henry.

Here's a fine race, with the late running Mr. Purple taking a huge overland route for the win.

And here's the great Best Pal blowing down the field in 1992

And finally here is something really special. This is the eastern shipper Broad Brush running down the great Ferdinand with the legendary Bill Shoemaker in the irons, catching him at the wire in one of the great finishes of all time.

During Kelso's racing career the records show he was among 60,000 in competition. From 1959-1964 Kelso was the leading money winner among the top horses of the world, and those included, Round Table, Nashua, Carry Back, Citation, Swaps, Armed, Bold Ruler, etc. He is the only horse in history to be five time "Horse of the Year" and five time winner of the "Jockey Club Gold Cup" a race that no longer is run at 2 miles where all the best horses of the world are invited to run on grass. Kelso defeated the best the world could put against him in these Gold Cup races. Kelso still holds the 2 mile record at 3:19 1/5. Kelso also holds the American record for 1 1/2 miles on grass at Laurel's Washington International at a time of 2:23 4/5 which is faster than Secretariat's legendary win in the 1973 Belmont on dirt of 2:24. Kelso was seven years old at the time and had 15 track records. Kelso was not a large horse, but he was assigned over 130 lbs on 24 occasions and up to 136 lbs. Eddie Arcaro said the breaking point for a horse is 130 lbs and Kelso won 11, placed 2nd 5 times carrying over 130 lbs. Kelso won the Handicap Triple Crown in 100 degree heat in the fastest time ever and no horse has done so before or since. Kelso defeated Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Carryback and Belmont winner Quadrangle and also defeated such turf specialists as Mongo and Gun Bow. Kelso could run on any surface and placed in the money in all but 10 of his 63 races. Kelso was not as pretty as Secretariat, was gelded so he could not reproduce like Man O War, but when all is considered, Kelso was the greatest racehorse of all time. Eddie Arcaro himself said "Kelso was the best horse of any age." Nothing can be taken away from Secretariat, the greatest Triple Crown winner, or Man O War, a legend, or Citation who at three won 27 of 29 and could have won all if not held back, but for six years Kelso proved he was the greatest and his unbelievable record proves it. No horse ever did what Kelso accomplished for so long, and no horse will ever again be five time Horse of the Year. Kelso, when all is considered is without equal!

I'm reluctant to give this a rating because this is actually 14 separate races. Some of them are great, some of them are mediocre, but in my opinion they should be listed separately. I cannot in honesty rank the Turf, the Classic, and the Juvenile, for example, as the same race.

Here are the races of the Breeder's Cup.

$1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf
$1 million Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint (gr. I)
$2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I)
$2 million Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (gr. IT)
$2 million Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic (gr. I)
$500,000 Breeders' Cup Marathon
$1 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (gr. IIT)
$1 million Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (gr. I)
$1 million Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint
$2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I)
$2 million Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I)
$2 million Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT)
$3 million Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. IT)
$5 million Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I)

But until that happens, lets have a look at some great moments.

This race is now defunct, but during its era it was one of the premier races in the calendar.

From 1917 to 1938, it was won by horses like Sir Gallant, Phar Lap, and Seabuscuit. A decision by the Mexican authorities to outlaw gambling killed the race, and by the time the decision was reversed Santa Anita had pretty much stolen the thunder of the track. The race was last run in 1958.

The biggest race on the Australian calendar, this is a tough go, with horses running close to 2 miles. It has stopped many a great horse and it has been the making of a few more.

Most notably Phar Lap, who won the race in 1930 carrying 61.5 kilograms. Arguably one of the greatest horses of all time, the Red Terror blew his opponents away while carrying outrageous weight.
