I love taking the cable car.  But the one that runs from California/Van Ness to the financial district.  The Powell/Hyde to Fisherman's Wharf usually has a ridiculous wait time and is crammed with tourists.  As way of commuting its improbable for most unless you live along one of the lines.

While there are some bike paths in SF, it's not a super bike friendly city when you compare it to say, Amsterdam. Also, the hills make it tough.
