I have been feeding my Great Dane and Shepard/Chow mix this food for a little over a month now. It came highly recomended by a petsmart employee. Over the past two weeks I have noticed my shepard/chow has very little energy. In the past week both of them vomit daily. There stools seem normal but after doing some research on the food I'm noticing a trend. I just threw out both 40lb bags and sent my husband to the store for their old brand of dog food.

We wanted the best for our Yorkie. When we adopted her, we transitioned her slowly from Eukanuba to Blue Bufalo as it was the best ranked holistic dog food at the store on the day we adopted her. She never had a problem.

Then, I wanted to find something even better for our little Yorkie so I asked around and found out that Innova was the way to go. I started transitioning her from Blue Buffalo to Innova and after the 3rd day she started to develop a terrible diarrhea and stomach ache. It got so bad that she would not sleep at night and had constant accidents in her crate (poor thing). To make this long story short, it took us three weeks (plus visits and calls to the vet) AND to go back to feed her Blue Buffalo to get her back to normal. Now her stool is firm again. On the other hand, I have the feeling that Blue Buffalo is not the best tasting food, but her health is the most important thing for us, so I mix her normal food with a little bit of other healthy foods once or twice a week for a change (teat). She can handle that with no diarrhea.

My dogs love Royal Canin Chihuahua 28 mini dog food. I only gave it four stars out of five because I buy the Chihuha food and the kibble is just too big for my little ones. My Chihuahua's are in the three pound range. I have NEVER come across a twenty pound Chihuahua and that is what it says on the bag... for dogs up to twenty pounds.
PLEASE make the kibble smaller.

yesterday

After feeding our huskies this food for a couple of months, I just happened to be looking closely at the kibble. It contained all kinds of LITTLE HAIRS baked right into the kibble!!! No by-products? Yeah, right. They lie like every other "human grade" dog food company. I'm tired of paying $70.00 a bag for roadkill.

I've switched all three dogs to Halo. Now THAT is high quality. Pricey, but awesome.

Good the first ingredient is named meat, but they would earn a better rating if they used qualilty carbohydrates and added some fruit and vegetables.

Update from my previous post. My dogs did love this food and I still consider it a high quality product, however after them being on it for 2 plus months they no longer "gobble" it up like they did and it has caused an odd red staining around thier eyes, mouths, feet, and rear end. I had to stop it and have since switched to a new food. I would still recommend Merricks, not every food agrees with every dog.

great canned food, especially the wing-a ling, another great attribute about the food, is that the cans are not lined with BPA , that is the truth, the canning co. that the Merrick's use don't have BPA lined cans, and to make sure the M. co. had the food within the cans tested, and they found no BPA in the foods.

Well....after years of using this food for my dog, I am greatly disappointed in what Natural Balance has done to their Limited Ingredient Diets. First, they changed the Potato and Duck. I said, OK, I can still feed him the Venison formula and the Fish formula. They just did the same thing to the Venison formula that they did to the Duck one...took out the Venison meal!!!!!! So it is now 3/4 carb and 1/4 meat, basically. It's a only a matter of time before they change the Fish formula too, I suppose. It is hard enough to find grain free exotic protein dog foods for dogs with major allergies. I am on a limited budget so buying dehydrated foods, while very healthy, all the time will break me. Why do dog food companies have to change and cheapen their ingredients like this?
At least I know I can order the Great Life Grain/Potato free formulas online, but it's more expensive than Natural Balance. I will have to cut corners in other aspects of my life because I refuse to deny my dog healthy dog food, even on a fixed income. Shame on you Natural Balance for ruining a good thing!

Last update 5/14/08-Yet again, this food has surpassed my expectations!! I am on the second month of feeding my dog the Sweet Potato and Venison Dry Formula and so far, so great! To boost the protein levels he is also eating the Wellness 95% Venison Canned food as a topper. Allergies are still diminished, coat is wonderful, and no digestive issues. I do add supplements to his meal which might also help. He gets fish oil capsules, Immune Blend, and a Green Blend all made by the same fabulous company called B Naturals. I don't mean to plug another product as well, but I think the amazing food and the fantastic supplements together have made my dog very healthy and happy. Another home run by Natural Balance.

Update 3/06/08-I have had my English Springer Spaniel, Jasper on the Sweet Potato and Fish Dry formula along with the Fish and Sweet Potato Canned Food for about 3 months and the results are amazing!!! He did fantastic on the Potato and Duck and is doing just as great on the Fish. He went to the vet for his physical last week and the whole office was stunned at how well he looks. His coat is flawless and shinier than when he was a puppy. They said he looks the best he ever has and that he looks like he is a young dog. He is going to be 10 this month and is in perfect health. I credit alot of this this wonderful food. It has made him look and feel younger than ever!! I can't believe that a dog with so many allergies and sensitivities has come out of it better than I thought he would. This food has been a miracle!!

Even though this food has had some recalls, the Potato and Duck Dry and the Duck and Potato Canned food is the ONLY food that my dog does amazing on. He has loads of food allergies and sensitivities, and this food is the only one that agrees with his skin and ears, doesn't bother his stomach, makes his breath great, and keeps his eyes from running. I have tried many other premium brands, but always go back to this one for my guy. For my dog, this food is a keeper!!

We started feeding our dog Beneful (Also came from Walmart) about a month ago. She has not been well ever since. her appetite is now almost non-existant, she has lost lots of weight, her third eye is showing, red eyes in general, today started vomiting yellow fluid( not clear but solid colored).

Of course we are very worried but all the other reviews have helped me to deal with this accordingly. It sounds like Beneful is the culprit. We cant afford expensive vet bills, and from what i read, i'm not sure it would really help.

Please pray for our "Emily". thanks.

Our dog Spartacus (boxer) had a lot of health issues related to his bread, genetically, (gum, teeth and mostly skin) the latest was his body carried 4 bacterias and was 6 months under treatment (antibiotics) and healing creams. We fed him Solid Gold "Barking at the moon" and cooked food (yes I cooked for him rice, fish, chicken, vegi) as told by the holistic doctor.
The discovery of this Orijen food (the 6 fishes) 3 months ago changed his life and ours. No more rashes on his body, no scratching until bleeding. His all "personality" is much better(he feeels better), he is more a sweetheart than can anybody expects from a dog. I know that is the food and I recommend it a lot. The first time I gave him he actually showed me the box to give him more. And I gave up the cooking which is a less of a job for me. We love our dog and love this food which gave him back to us. Recommend it , recommended a lot.
