Canned and Packaged Goods

Preserving food by way of canning it was first discovered and used by the French military in the early 1800s. Tinned foods came into popularity among the urban population in the late 1800s. Perhaps because of this history, there's something quaint about picking canned goods off the shelves. What are your favorite canned goodies? From soups to vegetables to condensed milk (a must-have for bakers), many treats come in canned packages.

Review Icon duncan36 reviewed Ragu in Pasta Sauce:
This stuff is kind of a relic of the past. You fry up a lb of hamburger, and an onion, dump Ragu on top of it, cook it till hot, then serve it on spaghetti. In that role it tastes pretty darn good, this is how people in the North eat spaghetti.
However in todays world theres so many good complete pasta sauces. People today expect the pasta sauce to be basically complete out of the jar. If you get this stuff expecting that you will be grossly disappointed.

Really this stuff is more of a meal starter, like the Manwich of spaghetti. It shouldnt really be called pasta sauce, more like a pasta starter or something. In that role its good it complements ground beef and onion really nicely. In the role of a complete sauce that you heat up and pour over pasta ithough its no good at all.

Out of all the pasta sauces in jars, Rao's Sausage and Mushroom is absolutely the best. It says "Dinner in a Jar" on the label and it is positively the best. It has just the perfect combination and amount of mushrooms and sausage. You don't have to search for these ingredients. They're in every spoonful. Not overly salted nor overpowered by oregano as so many of the others are. My Key Food charges $10.00 for the jar (they're crooks). You can get a jar at Fairway for $8.49 and when they have them on sale, for $6.99. It's worth every penny.

Great seafood soup; they have the best Snapper soup on the market! Their Lobster Bisque is outstanding as well

Overrated crap. Watered down, bland sauce. A sub-par generic brand maskquerating as a name brand.

Blows ragu out of the water. More seasoned and not as generic and bland tasting, truely a wonder in the world of mass produced tomato sauce. Ragu's sauce is just merely watered down store brand or generic sauce in a brand name container.

It has become quite apparent that if you eat this soup, or pretend to on television, you will not win the Super Bowl (although you will have a soup bowl).

There was a time I didn't used to like Progresso, but I seen a commercial on TV, and the soup looked really good, and I decided to give it another try. It was pretty good.

I really like the chicken noodle and the beef and russet potato soups.

I've never really thought Progresso was all that great. I mean their chicken noodle I find to be better than Campbell's but nothing I would write home about. I however am a huge fan of New England Clam Chowder, which is hit or miss in restaurants. I had tried a few canned brands and couldn''t get past the first bite. I reluctantly thought I would try progresso when I saw it in the grocery store this evening, not expecting to be impressed. Once I cooked and tasted it I was quite surprised! It was indeed the best canned Clam Chowder I have tried and rivaled a few restaurants I had ordered it in. All in all I think Progresso normally doesn't deliver the bang for the buck, but they have won me as a fan for their New England Clam Chowder.
