They're inevitable, so not really much of a factor.

You have to spend a little time in a benz to really appreciate one. The knowledge of knowing how safe and the phenominal driving experience make this truely the best car available.
Yes, they build some very expensive models, but not all models are expensive. To appreciate the value, check insurance rates. Because of the safety, they are not expensive to insure.
We drove the "other german marque" for years, and after 3 Mercedes, we will never go back. The only single problem is driving in our country with the interstate speed limits, these cars rule the German Autobahn!

If a person don't have a reliable vehicle, then there's no point in really owning it. You might as well take the bus or walk, for that matter, if you can't purchase something that you can depend on.

I think this is a pretty important factor. The vehicle I own now gets a lot better gas mileage than my last one. To me, than can add up to be quite a savings.

Location can make or break the sale. I just passed up an exceptionally good deal on eBay 'cause the BMW R65 was 900 miles away and the expense and hassle of going to get it overwhelmed the bargain factor.

On my budget, price is paramount.

I bought my "gas guzzler" at the height of "pump panic", and got it for a song.

Even with the endless summer premium (Florida bikes average about $500.00 more than their Yankee equivalents) my bike was under $2,000.00, and should last me the rest of my life.

UPDATE:

Payments?

Not when you've saved enough to pay cash.

ALWAYS go to the library and check Consumer Reports reliability ratings before purchasing a car.

You'll be glad you did!

Being of median size, I have no problem fitting into virtually any automobile.

For reasons unknown however, the vast majority of bikes are too tall (or just too large overall) for me.

I agree with CS's concept, but my "cheap around town" vehicle is a bicycle (2 cents per mile) and my "cheap around the county" rig is a Honda motorcycle (60 mpg).

The car gets 20mpg, but I only drive about 2,000 miles per year, so auto mileage isn't a major issue for me.

I take this under consideration, but I'm not a freak about it.

"Accident" avoidance is much more important.
