I hadn't seen the Skydiggers live in about 10 years when I went to last weekend's show.

I didn't know if I was going to get a golden oldie blast from the past, a night with a vital band who were still playing their hearts out for the fans after 20 years on the road or a fresh approach from a band that has been revived by a couple of new albums after having taken a five year hiatus at the beginning of this decade. Turned out it was 'yes' on all three accounts.

Best show I've seen in a long time and the first show I've been to in a while where most of the crowd danced from the first song to the last.

Jose Gonzalez's music ranges from boring to occasionally mediocre. It makes great background music for film & youtube, but that's about it. I find his songs irritatingly redundant on their own.

Listen for yourself: His song, Heartbeats, is the background music for this video from the Graffiti Research Lab.

Rucker has been quite successful with his recent foray into country music, but unfortunately his solo country stuff doesn't sound that much different from his old Hootie and the Blowfish stuff. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad, I'm just not sure it's country.

Supposedly his more pop-like sound isn't even his own fault. According to an interview I saw with him a few months ago, he went into the recording session with a much more country sound, and the record company bigwigs told him it was too country. It's a shame too, because I'd like to know what he sounded like with his own take on country music as opposed to doing it the way the record company people wanted.

At the risk of exposing you to Christmas related material almost a month before anyone should really have to deal with such things, "Christmas in Jail" is probably my favorite song from Asleep at the Wheel, so here you go.

"My Heart Has a History" and "I Do" were pretty good, but Brandt hasn't really done much else of note.

More like 3.5 stars. Taylor Swift is talented, she writes her own songs, and being a cute blonde certainly hasn't hurt her career. That being said, she's a bit too much pop and not enough country for my taste. Congratulations on winning CMA Entertainer of the Year at only 19 years old, Taylor, you sold the albums and concert tickets it takes to earn that award. However, I really do hope that this isn't the direction that country music is taking. But country music has recovered from worse misdirection than this (John Denver won Entertainer of the Year in 1975, and it took over a decade for country music to recover from some of the crap put out in the mid to late 70s).

The two cuts on my old High Water 45 record of "School Girl" and "You got Me Running" seem much earlier than the rest of songs on cd. I can hear the great instrumentals from David Joyner on sax, Bobby Carnes on organ,Willie Roy on guitar, Lois Brown on bass, Tim Turner on trumpet, et.al. This was the sound of great R&B as it moved up river from New Orleans. While all the selections are the real deal covers of that period, the later ones, with exception of "Steam Roller," didn't have the full instrumentalist's sounds. They had it down with Dr.Evans, but seemed to lose their "signifyin" along the way. I bought the cd anyway. Charles Plymell

Although there's really not a bad song on it,I have to give their debut album 3 and a half stars. It starts off nicely with "Good times,Bad times",which shows off the bands awesome rythym section as well as Pages lightning fast pentatonic riffs. This is interestingly juxtaposed to the mellow "Babe,I'm gonna leave you"."You Shook Me" firmly establishes their blues roots, and this brings to mind one of my pet peeves with Zep : They didn't give ANY credit to the many Delta Bluesmen they ripped off until they were sued by the inimitable Willie Dixon himself, and it became public knowledge. In my opinion, many other bands from the same late 60s era did a better job of melding rock and blues, more in homage and less plageristic in nature.Besides,Robert Plant just doesn't cut it as a blues singer. His voice is more suited to the more celtic material.Next up is "Dazed and Confused",one of the best songs on the album. There is a very original instrumental,"Black Mountain Side",complete with tabla drums, which was pretty exotic back then. They flex their Metal Muscles on "Communication Breakdown",which is followed by my favorite song on the disc,"I can't quit you baby".(which was one of many ideas lifted from Dixons material).I have to say that John Bonhams work on the album is easily a 5 star performance, and so is John Paul Jones' bass and keys. However, for all the notoriety they recieved, there's just something lackluster about Page and Plant. The album closes with another pastiche of old blues,"How many More Times",that sounds very poor next to Albert Kings version of "They call me the Hunter",part of which it borrows.I have to give them credit for inspiring countless kids to check out old blues artists and to pick up instruments, but I feel the band is,and has been,over-rated.

Grant Green, who died of a heart attack at 44,had a bluesy touch, fans wouldn't mistake for anyone else.He recorded several excellent albums, and his popularity may have increased since his death roughly 30 years ago.Obviously there was 'I Want To Hold Your Hand' by the Beatles;to Grant Green fans,it was more like,'Grant Green I Wanna Hold Your Hand'(title track of his cd). Here he plays 'Exodus'
from 'Sunday Mornin'(Kenny Drew-piano,Ben Tucker-bass,Ben Dixon-drums).Photobucket
