Sickeningly saccharine and tremendously uninspired, every song I've heard from this band feels like an inferior version of something I've heard before.

Their music is impressively boring, from phrase to phrase and from song to song. The Raveonettes have a decent following, but I'm always a bit surprised when a friend openly admits to liking their music.

Here's their latest single, which inspired this review:

Selections off their previous release, Pretty in Black, weren't quite this bad, but they still felt purely referential to other songs more in the spirit of Musak than Music.

A groundbreaking ensemble that has included a who's who of roots string players over the last 35 years, the original DGQ featured Tony Rice, Todd Phillips and Darrel Anger and has included legends like Vassar Clements, Stephane Grappelli, Tony Trishka, Jerry Douglas, Mark O'Connor, Rob Wasserman in his line-up. There's as much jazz as there is country in Grisman's version of bluegrass.

Bluegrass is but a tiny corner of the music that this talented and ecclectic artist has pursued. She plays jazz, eastern european folk, folk, pop, and some fairly avant garde acoiustic music. The closest she has come to the mainstream was a brief stint in the vocal pop group the Wailin' Jennys, where she sang, played guitar, violin, mandolin and occassional clarinet, I believe.

Alison Brown is a first rate banjo whiz but her approach to bluegrass is a little too populist, especially on her group records compared to solo outings. She's trying to make the music more accessible to a wider audience. Personally I think most people are drawn to bluegrass for the very fact that it is off the beaten path.

I discovered these tremendously talented musicians just days after their last local tour date on their Farewell (For Now) tour (2007ish), so I've never seen them live :( Fortunately, Nickel Creek have been featured a few times on the All Songs Considered: Live Music podcast, so I can attest that they're just as skillful live, with a whole lot of extra personality thrown in for good measure.

Their songs have a bluegrass and folksy flavor, with a bit of rock influence. The lyrics are progressive, and sometimes even a little bitter and dark. Their third release, Why Should the Fire Die? is far and away my favorite, and one of the few contemporary releases that I can't find fault in. I love everything from Sara's Watkins' soulful vocals to Chris Thile's intense and complex mandolin to Sean Watkins' driving guitar. Their harmonies, both vocal and instrumental transcend words.

Here are a few of my favorite songs for your enjoyment:

Eveline (Why Should the Fire Die?)

Helena (Why Should the Fire Die?)

Out of the Woods (Self-Titled)

Reasons Why (Self-Titled)

Social Distortion certainly doesn't win points for variety, since practically all their songs sound identical to one another, but when I'm in the mood for something upbeat and catchy with a gritty undertone, they get the job done nicely.

A few of my favorites are:

Don't Take Me For Granted

Footprints on my Ceiling

Angel's Wings

Peter's heart is always in the right place..............one of my favorite songwriters. Beyond being a GREAT songwriter his guitar playing is so overlooked IMHO!
