I've been involved, as a parent, in Girl Scout, Boy Scout, and 4-H leadership. My son is an Eagle Scout and my daughter is working on her Gold Award. Scouting has been extremely educational, but no more so than 4-H. Within 4-H, there are paid staff-members who work hands-on at each county, not just at council levels. Furthermore, the resources of 4-H seem to be more accessible and just plain fun! While safety and rules are important, they do not seem to restrict the enjoyment of activities. Kids seem to have more freedom to choose areas in which to participate in 4-H as there is no set or prescribed program that must be adhered to for progression within the organization.
I have tremendous respect for the work of all organizations benefiting youth. 4-H teaches a wide variety of skills, offering diverse opportunities for growth and education. I highly recommend 4-H as a life-long extracurricular activity.
