This helps a little bit. When I think of it I try to keep my head up, shoulders back. There are other reasons to do that, including overall alertness, improving confidence and overall back and neck health.

My favorites are dried figs, green apples, almonds with honey glaze, and sparkling water. I don't really notice much of an alertness from any of them but they do curb my cravings and help with sustained energy.

Cold showers in particular will wake us up. Just turn it on cold all the way and stay in for a few minutes. It's tough, but it gets me up and helps me to feel that way. You may have heard a theory that Katherine Hepburn and a few others have said, which is by having a cold shower in the morning, you have a crappy thing happen to you, and now that that's out of the way, the rest of the day goes by with a little more ease.

I meditate 20 minutes per day. It does seem to help with alertness and focus. I would prefer a nap, if I can fall asleep, but if not meditation works somewhat.

Sleep! If only I'd thought of that. Well, for anyone with kids, particularly young kids you know that this isn't usually the norm. I always get a little angry when I read the statistics that say something like, if you don't get 7-9 hours of sleep you're ineffective and basically going to die. Tell you what though, if I have 20 minutes during my day for a nap and can actually fall asleep in my car, it definitely helps.

I've read that peppermint can wake us up a bit, so for a while I was drinking peppermint tea and eating peppermints. I noticed a slight increase in alertness and my breath was good, but I read that peppermint causes a dip in testosterone so that was the end of that experiment.

There's something about an apple, and I've found it to be a green apple, that will wake us up a bit. It's nothing like the jolt that comes from a cup of strong coffee, but for a very mild increase in short term energy and a bit of a pick-up of sustained energy for a couple hours, green apples are a good choice.
