Hubie Brown knows basketball better than most anyone. It's a privilege to listen to him because there aren't too many old-school old guys like him left.

If I had been in the weight room and saw the weights Stafon head been lifting come crushing down on his throat, I undoubtedly would have given this a five star rating and I'm glad I didn't see this take place. But of course just reading about this terrible accident makes me cringe and I'm glad it to see it looks like he'll make a full recovery and according to the doctors that treated him, his well developed muscles in the throat/nekck area helped him prevent a worse injury, but as of now, he isn't able to talk but I suppose the effects of dropping the weight on his throat could have been MUCH, MUCH worse.

I hope others who work with/lift weights or will work with weights in the future or teach youngsters who who work with weights will learn from this accident and realize that weight lifting should be taken with the utmost precaution and always have a spotter with you and perhaps even two or three spotters for extremely weights (and I think Stafon did during the accident but unfourantely for him the accident still happened) and to never clown around in the weight room even if its with very light weights as you never know what might happen.

I'm surprised he didn't shoot his parents for naming him Plaxico. Seriously, that has to be in the top ten stupid real names for males.

Terrible aim, the shot missed his head by a good 3 feet.

Burress made a mistake but this guy is really getting screwed over. Twenty months sounds way too excessive....maybe twenty days and a yearlong suspension from the NFL? I feel bad for the guy.

Personally I think this is the real reason Plaxico Burress's gun went off in his pants.

I've really got to suscribe to ESPN.

Help me out here. If this is a sports story, what sport was involved? If Plaxico Burress was an electrician, would this have been one of the top electrical stories of 2008?

I feel bad about this, he's got a young family and he seems like a nice enough guy. Unfortunately in life if you do something stupid you sometimes get off, and sometimes pay the price. I'm not too sure there haven't been 150 times when he's brought that unlicensed gun somewhere he wasn't supposed to and as luck would have it he didn't get caught. When it did go off he could have killed himself, as he admits if it struck a major artery, or someone else. So all in all a harsh sentence but in the big scheme of things it could have been a worse situation.

I note with interest that Mr. Burress reportedly states that he didn't feel safe in that club unless he was armed. In my longstanding experience as a habitue of bars, clubs and other sources of nightlife, I have to say that any joint that I didn't feel safe in unless I was armed, would be a joint I didn't need to drink in at all.

All that being said, two years for this, strikes me as an "example sentence" given because of the perpetrators high profile. Not that I carry any brief for Plaxico, in fact I think he's a stupid asshole, but I really wonder if this isn't a case where someone's celebrity is doing them harm in court, rather than doing them good.

And having said that, I can't help myself. Plaxico reminds me of a character called Ricky in a viciously funny Canadian sitcom called Trailer Park Boys. He wears track pants constantly and frequently gets shot often by himself. Here's a sample.

Plax got two years in prison today, due to NYC's tough gun laws.

This one doesn't really sit right with me. Donte Stallworth, also an NFL receiver, got 24 days in prison for killing a man while drunk driving. Former VP Dick Cheney didn't get anything for shooting his friend in the face.

This strikes me as one of those occasions where it doesn't seem like there was a human brain involved in dictating the sentence. Other than Plax himself, this was a victimless crime. Pro athletes are at risk every time they leave the house, and you can see why these guys want to protect themselves.

He should have had the paperwork for the gun. He should have had a holster. He should not have put the gun in his elastic pants, and he shouldn't have been so klutzy as to shoot himself in the leg. But do we really need to send this man to prison for two years?
