My husband and I put this together in about a half hour, with me mostly holding the pieces in place. The directions were a bit... challenging in spots, not written as well as they could have been, but we laughed about it and just moved on. All the holes were in the right place... if you've put it together correctly, of course, and not put pieces in backwards since the directions were a bit difficult, as I've said. It seems solid enough for what we paid, and it will do the job of a changing table without a problem.
There was a 'new' smell to the baskets and hamper portion, but not enough to be overwhelming, and not quite as nice as a 'new car' smell.
I'm not seeing the problems people complained about - mine was in white, so maybe the manufacturing is off on the other colours, but all the pieces are made en masse - it's not like one will go through the machine wrong, after all.
