I'm really not a fan of most of the contemporary realist artwork that this gallery shows, but I respect it for being good amongst its peers.
The stable of this gallery, though very good overall, includes many artists who are sure things and are in the process of resting on their mid- to end-career laurels instead of making influential and progressive work. Back in the day many of the artists that this gallery represents were hotshots, but now some of them have either stopped being groundbreaking because theyre lazy or just arent much better than they were when they got big. That, of course, doesnt mean that these artists are no longer hotshots. And that, of course, doesnt exclude the fact that many of their artists are awesome.
Price tags here for artwork are generally in the lower-mid range, $3,000 - $200,000+, for a painting or a sculpture, while a drawing usually costs less. If you like something that you see you may end up spending lots of money on it. The likelihood that something you buy here end up in a museum is about 1 in 20, but you should still seek the advice of an expert before you buy. Overall most things are priced fairly and are worthy of their price tags.
If you are on the Upper East Side and in the mood to see some nice art definitely stop in and have a look. When youre in the neighborhood it is worth seeking this place out for its consistency and quality of the shows they put on here. The staff here is one that tends to range from the slightly, or occasionally very, pretentious intern to the very helpful and intelligent director, or the other way around. This gallery is the type of place that provides consistently influential exhibitions by artists who are well liked by experts.
