As if the multiple Travel Channel and Food Network shows haven't told you enough, the Penguin is a must for travelers to Charlotte. The Penguin has been around long enough to still be called a drive-in, even though it's technically not, and the menu houses traditional American and, more importantly, Southern-American delicacies. The starters, fried pickles, are good enough to make a meal, but there's just too much amazing other stuff to try. The first trip you make (and you'll need a couple trips to soak it all in), it's best to get a Double Block burger, "Southern Style" (with chili, onions, mustard, and slaw), and definitely a side of the onion strings to complement your red meat. There are definitely other favorites, like their loaded hot dogs, but my second choice is the Dixie Chicken, an oversized fried chicken breast sandwich, with ranch. And what's more, all while you're scarfing down a helping of greasy goodness, the signature jukebox boasts some of the most eclectic tunes you could ask for - from Hank Williams, Jr. to The Clash, and so on. Bring some friends and try everything, caus it's all good.
