Mexico City was founded in 1325 as the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan. It is both the oldest and the highest city in North America. Still, these are not the only titles the city holds--with 22 million residents, it is the most populous in the world. The city is the political and financial capital of Mexico, but maintains much of its heritage, which are linked to three cultural histories--pre-Hispanic, colonial, and modern.
