Grove, of Coatesville, PA, was defending his crown against "The Clown Prince of Boxing" in Mexicali, Mexico. He had won (by any expert's estimation) no fewer than 11 of the 14 previous rounds when he got knocked down 3 times by Paez in the final round. As there was no 3 Knock Down Rule in Mexico, Grove finished the fight. The decision was given to crowd favorite Paez and Grove lost his belt.
