Grigori Efimovich Rasputin (1872-1916) was well known for his mysterious power and influence over the ill-fated Russian royal family. Dubbed the mad monk he was favored by the Russian czarina Aleksandra who believed he could cure her son of hemophilia. On December 30, 1916, a plot to assassinate him took place in which he was poisoned, shot, stabbed and finally drowned.
