Deadliest Countries for Journalists

Journalist Anna Politkovskaya, a severe critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was recently gunned down outside her apartment in Moscow. Every year the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) publishes a list of journalists killed while on assignment. The following list does not include those who were killed in accidents, such as car or plane crashes, unless the accident was caused by hostile action. The following statistics indicate where the most deaths occurred between 1996 and 2005. (There have been an additional 76 deaths in 2006 alone.) How dangerous do you think the countries on this list are for journalists?

Star Rating Scale: 1 = Not dangerous at all / 2 = Not terribly dangerous / 3 = Mildly dangerous / 4 = Somewhat dangerous / 5 = Very dangerous
