Spumante / Asti / Prosecco / Frizzante

Spumante / Asti / Prosecco / Frizzante, sparkling wines from Italy.

This topic is for ratings and reviews only of various types of sparkling wine from Italy--they should not be confused with Champagne, which is a specific name for one specific sparkling wine produced only in one appellation in France; see the separate topic Champagne. Sparkling wine is carbonated, making it sparkly or bubbly or fizzy. Fully sparkling wine must contain a specified amount of carbonation, while "semi-sparkling" or "lightly sparkling" wine (called frizzante in Italy) must contain less than that specified amount of carbonation.

Spumante is the Italian term for a sparkling wine. Asti, the most famous example of this type of wine, is itself no longer called a spumante, even though it used to be--but no longer is--referred to as Asti Spumante. Asti, a region of Italy, produces both a fully sparkling wine (named Asti) and a lightly sparkling wine, or frizzante. Both are sweet and low in alcohol, and often enjoyed with dessert. The Astis are made from the Moscato grape, while spumantes produced elsewhere in Italy are made from various combinations of Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, and Pinot Noir. Prosecco, an Italian grape variety, is used in two regions of Italy to produce fully sparkling and lightly sparkling wines; the name "Prosecco" is protected under European law and can be used only for the wine made in those two regions from the Prosecco grape. See Wikipedia, Sparkling wine.
