Movies Best and Basic

This list serves to complement any list of American motion picture masterpieces, with titles from erstwhile nations which movielovers should consider indispensable. There may be many other favorites, but these are landmark efforts. On June 20th, 2007, the American Film Institute (AFI) broadcast the results of the 10th polling among its members regarding the 100 best American Movies. (It certainly was gratifying to find Alfred Hitchcock's 'Vertigo, 1958' in the number 9 spot, for so long having been regarded by diverse critics as an accomplished work but less so than 'Psycho, 1960' or 'North by Northwest, 1959'. Perhaps the time will also come for 'Notorious, 1946') Cannot reproach the American movie industry from so celebrating their contributions to the cinema. But, for whatever regard, these commemorations tend to relegate great moviemaking from other countries. The basic premise for this list is that the filmmaker, political considerations aside, made best possible use of all given cinematic factors for entertainment purposes, particularly the written word, whether as an original piece or adapting into cinematic terms a work from a different artistic medium, within the context and the development of motion pictures of its time.
