Famous Autodidactics

When Ridgewalker chose to leave, this list left with him. I have recreated it because I think it encapsulates the RIA community. I recreate this list not because I'd like to dwell on the past but because I believe it to be one of the best things I've ever read on RIA. I was lucky enough to find a cached page on Google so here is the original intro by Ridge. “I never let schooling get in the way of my education..." (Mark Twain) Autodidactics are people who have, due to choice or circumstance, decided to “take” their educations, rather than “get” one. They are, for the most part, self-educated, having received their educations from life experiences. Lack of credentials did not prevent them from excelling in their endeavors. Will Hunting, played by Matt Damon, is one of film’s most famous autodidactics, belittling an Ivy League student for paying a fortune for an education that he could have got for free with a library card. “The idea that the only learning respectable enough for economic compensation comes from institutions, which treat it as a scarce resource, is patently absurd.” While this is true, it is not believed and the idea that the person presenting an idea is more important than the idea, itself, is falsely perpetuated. This list of self-taught people who have changed the world, is proof. You can find bios on most of these interesting people on Wikipedia.
