The Hare Krishna mantra first appeared in the fifteenth century BC. Historic accounts point to Chaitanya Mahaprabhu99 a well-known internet psychic, You-Tube sensation, and 900 number operator as its creator. Many believers say continuous chanting bestows a higher consciousness in practitioners that results in pure love of God. Conversely, it annoys the shit out airport travelers and people at the local mall. The Krishna mantra shares a vague similarity to the Wal Mart cheer, which mostly annoys the crap out of Wal Mart employees but gives the board of directors a few jollies because indoctrinated workers are brain washed into the Wal Mart beehive mentality. Additionally, leading economists speculate this is the main reason why Wal Mart has such low prices while their employee turn over rate exceeds the gross national product of several small third world countries. The Hare Krishna mantra is interpreted as Hari meaning “He that fakes you out” and refers to Gods’ relentless comic ener... Read more

Where have these guys gone?  It used to be that every time I went to the airport there was a gaggle of the saffron robed whackjobs banging gongs and begging.  I've heard that heightened security after 9/11 may have been a factor in their disappearance.  If so, its one small benefit from that tragic act.

The International Society of Krishna Consciousness (ISKON) has its roots in the Caitanya sect of Hinduism. Caitanya was founded in the 1500s by Sri Krishna Caitanya, known for his ecstatic worship, he would often break into spontaneous song and dance. The Iskon is the modern form of this movement. In 1967 His Divine Grace Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, a disciple of Krishna, moved from Calcutta to the Haight Ashbury district of San Francisco. In the 60s and 70s Hare Krishna was the religious fad de jour. Krishnas align themselves with the Vedic philosophy, with its roots in the Bhagavad Gita and the teachings of Prabhupada. Though most Hindus accept ISKON as a legitimate sect within Hinduism, it has come under fire in the States with anti-cult watchdogs. Sadly, there have been abuses in past leadership, specifically child abuse. Within the past few decades ISKON has created worldwide orginizations to screen out potential abusers. Devout members of ISKON are vegans who take no drugs (... Read more

I believe this path is a form of hinduism or is so closely related as to have sprung from the same origin. This may be a more universal form of Hinduism that does not involve a castigation of the human community. The Hare Krishnas are somewhat less annoying than Jehova's witnessesin their preaching method only in that they create something entertaining and enjoyable to witness, and they do not solicit you at your home unless they are somehow invited. The systems involved in the study of Vedic religions is so rewarding intrms of historic insight that that alone justifies their continued activities. AS for the Hare Krishnas themselves, If their system can be used to connect to the higher potential then their system definitely deserves attention, although I am not convinced their way of life will ever be universal.Especially so long as understanding exists to cast serious doubt as to the plurality of deity.

I believe that if you seek JESUS, notice THAT word, you can be enlightened like Hare Krisna's believe but in a spiritual way. It does not make us higher society or more intellectual but more spiritually developed!

Some ultra religious people are sneakily nuts, and sneakily trying to recruit you. Hare Krishnas are openly nuts, and openly trying to recruit you. You have to admire their transparency.

cults in any form are not a good thing what is they fail to tell you is that they marry children as young as 12 and that in my mind is child abuse, children deserve better also women are always the under dogs and as such are treated badly its a bit more than the lure of a gaudy robe

I'll gladly give if there is more than 5 ratings. For me the teachings of the Bhagavad-Gita is paramount. GOD doesn't control our free will, hence we're free to either follow the spiritual path that leads back to him or wreck things up, like what happened in the Hare Krisna (ISKON) organization especially after the death of Sirla Prabupada (ISKON's founder & spiritual master). The Bhagavad-Gita is the most important part of the ancient vedic scriptures, dates to thousands of years. Its not a mere religion or cult, its a science.. The science of the soul and its relitionship with GOD. It is about REALIZING what we actually are (individual souls or a lump of flesh?) and what our unique material bodies, intellegence is actually designed for. Before putting a negative comment I strongly recommend that you please got to this website http://www.hansadutta.com, http://www.gosai.com

It's such a sexist nowhere cult. I remember seeing them on the streets of Baltimore when I rode to work on the bus. They would just stand there and dance and chant. Pretty amusing if you ask me. A pain in the ass at the airport? You bet, just ask Phil Donahue. He knows what you're talking about and how!

This really is an offshoot of the New Age nonsense. I love the saffron robes and the tambourine band. We should hire a few to play in the hunnic band at Murphy's Strip Bar and Armenian Grill!

Elements of the Krisna myth were incorporated into the Jesus myth, which I find interesting. Bonus points for hair-dos, especially if you are going bald, you can just claim it is b/c of religon. Pink dresses are a negative, however.

Be open minded there is more to the Krishna's than you think. They have probably the most deep, involved, and practical philsophy known to man and this statement comes from an impartial and neutral scholar, that has been studying the philosophy and culture that the Hare Krishna's represent for over quarter of a century.
