Cynicism and skepticism are not comedy. Stewart depends on this too much and it's simply not funny. Also his technique of humiliation is overused and is too mean spirited.

Were the Oscars on? According to the ratings many people either didn't care or didn't know. With Stewart as the host I am even more glad I didn't watch!  I am a fan of the movies, but not of the Academy.

2008 Update:  I think he did a fine job especially considering the entire broadcast had a bit of a thrown together feel because of the writers strike.  I'm upgrading him from a 3, which was the 2006 rating, to a 4.  He was good enough to be able to think on his feet and handle the broadcast with the right amount of knowing wit, especially given that there wasn't much time put into the pre-production.Original review from March 2006:  I think he came out flat and lacked punch but got better as the show went on. I think he's late night's biggest talent, but like Letterman, he basically brought his show to the Oscar Broadcast with limited appeal and success. The filmed comedy bits were right out of the writers' room of the Daily Show and fine for that broadcast but not great stuff for a live awards telecast. The gay imagery from old westerns montage was the best of that lot. He was witty, clever, cynical but not personable, too detached. Ultimately, I think he failed because he was too "Ne... Read more

I thought Jon Stewart did an excellent job as host tonight, and think he should probably be invited back again. He delivered his jokes in a classy manner that fits the mood of the event. He wasn't over the top, but wasn't boring either. He mixed in some political humor without overdoing it. I liked his comment to the Hollywood crowd after making a joke about Hilary Clinton that was not too well received that went somewhat along the lines of, "Your people can get it too."

Jon Stewart gave a fine performance as host of the Academy Awards this year. Much better than the last time he hosted. He kept away from the political humor (mostly) and kept the show moving. I think that he may have been wearing a little too much lipstick however.

It's a bit of a stretch to include The Daily Show in this group, since it's mostly satire, and the interview segment is less than 50% (maybe less than 33%?) of the show. But Jon does manage to evoke some serious stuff mixed in with his humor while interviewing people, and he does select interesting people to interview. Sometimes I wish he would just leave the humor out of the interview segment, especially when it's someone with a lot of good stuff to talk about, but then that's what the serious talk show hosts should be doing, interviewing more interesting people. I like Stewart's intelligent, perceptive interviewing when he's being serious, though I also love his humor. Enough people liked his hosting of the Oscars that he was invited back to do it again this year.

For heavens sake.....this is not news!!!!! He is a comedian.... a political comedian, and not even a good one at that. With him, its the left against the right. The left can never be wrong. The right are not just people with different opinions, they are drooling idiots. That doesnt seem like a very smart platform....he just alienated about half of his potential audience. The great political comedians made it us (the people), against them (the government), like the late great Will Rogers did. And I doubt very much if  history will remember John Stewart the way Will Rogers is.

Jon Stewart's "The Daily Show" is the number one "news" source of those under 30, and while the "grownups" like to pretend that this is some kind of outrage, let's all remember that it was those who watched CABLE and SATELLITE TV "news" networks - like FOX and CNN - who were the most DISINFORMED about the facts - in fact, like an infamous Nazi propagandist once commented on the importance of a well-controlled mass-media, the more one watches the news in a good facist society, the less one knows and the more confused they become. The kids were right andmost of the "grownups" are now proven beyond a shadow of a doubt to be the fools and the dupes. Sean Penn knows WAY  more about Iraq than Sean Hannity does! George Clooney's haircut has a higher IQ than George Bush. A fact is a fact and 2+2=4. Just watching the Bushies trying to spin those same tired old yarns - it just looks pathetic. Reality always gets the last laugh. It's laughing pretty HARD right about now! I imagine that it's gettin... Read more

Any attempt to give this guy a failing grad must have come from some disgruntled right winger that hates to hear the truth. You dont have to love Jon Stewart but you have to respect and appreciate his brilliant talent at pointing out the retarded aspects of our lives. Be it in politics or some small town quirks he makes the wrong, the odd and the curiously hidden in plain sight more visible. He does it in an informative and hilarious manner. He is obviously on the left but luckily the right is providing the material. I do not see anyone funny out there making fun of democrats more than Jon Stewart does!!! Before criticizing Stewart, show me some right wing comedy, prove to me that there is material here to scold the left on. Good luck, the most you find is enough to fill in a quick segment in 30 minutes jammed with stupid right wing dooms dayers.

I think Jon did a great job. What was disappointing to me was the lack of response from the crowd of Hollywood celebs. I think many of them take themselves way too serious. They didn't laugh when he motioned towards the wealthy actors and actresses, and told the viewing audience "These are the people you are stealing from when you pirate movies." Pretty much the entire night, Jon seemed to strike out with the crowd, making sarcastic jokes that the general American population was most likely cracking up about, but our "beloved" movie stars sat silently through. When Jon pretended to be in the midst of a newscast, and said "That is why Scientology isn't just good for me, it's good for the country" or something to that effect (making fun of people like Tom Cruise) you could almost hear a pin drop. I found it super funny, and that's why I gave him 4 stars.

Though not to the level of Bob Hope of Johnny Carson, I thought Jon did a great job. That said, I surmise that Bob Hope's humor, great as it was, would not work as well in the 21st century. I knew Stewart and his Daily Show crew of writers would come through. While Stewart's monologue didn't hit any grand slams, he was more like Wade Boggs, banging out a succession of good, witty, fresh takes with a bit of bite and few Whoopiesque Groaners. He actually did his best work with the inter-intro banter. His best line was: "Martin Scorcese - 0 -- Three 6 Mafia - 1." Hey, he had Jack Nicholson in stitches. I've been a fan of Jon Stewart since 1988, when he hosted a hilarious show on MTV called "You Wrote It - You Watch It." The Daily Show (along with Colbert report) is what me and my wife watch to catch National News. Stewart's real name is Jon Leibowitz. A graduate of William & Mary, he was a star soccer player who scored the winning goal to give W&M; the Colonial Athletic Conferen... Read more

Jon Stewart proved to be a decent enough host, though some would say he had more singles and foul tips than comedic homeruns. Like Chris Rock in the prior year, Jon Stewart excels at the kind of sarcastic observational humor that rips at the establishment. The kind of stuff that can make a Hollywood audience squirm behind their smiles. The Daily Show comic came more into his element as the night went on, as he shifted from poking fun at the audience to poking fun at the spectacles on stage. Many think an Oscar host needs to give the show a feel-good warmth, in the charming traditions of Billy Crystal, Johnny Carson and Steve Martin. I agree, but would add that a host should balance feel-good entertainment with enough of any kind of belly laughs that keep a long show from becoming too boring or insufferably pretentious. Jon Stewart may not have dazzled, but he was good enough in these aims.

Jon needs to work on his poor excuse for satire somewhere else. Perhaps France will take him. The only time I ever really appreciated him was that brief stint in Half-Baked. Other than that, he's no better than that loser, Al Franken.

Watching this guy on the Daily Show made me reanalyze my understanding of the word "bias". Can you have a point of view and still be pretty objective? Watching Stewart I have to say yes, you can. He clearly has a point of view, which he is open about (he voted for Kerry, etc.), but the interpretation that's among the jokes has more clarity than any news source I can think of. In an interview Stewart said something that explained to me what I've been noticing: "We need a News channel that doesn't define truth in terms of Left and Right."

This is an absolute joke to have this guy higher than Letterman or Leno. In my opinion this guy is so predictable he's Boring with a capital B. He wasn't too funny in standup and this show is so simple to run that anyone over 12 knows the recipe: You take the daily DNC talking point claims that have no proof. Then you pretend that you know the truth, and of course it is the DNC talking points. Then you try to imply someone is a liar based on talking points that are far from being factual or proven. Oh, and if you didn't know, that's funny. If that's funny maybe we need a host that calls Bush a do-do head for about an hour. IOW, not insulting, but Boring with a capital B. I'll admit that he has some funny things but he has to throw in so many lamers to get the political talking points across, the good ones can't pull it out of the dumpster. Petty is the first thing that comes to mind instead of humor. Pretend you are an intellectual and behave like an adolescent who always has the nee... Read more

Do not underestimate the importance of The Daily Show. Jon Stewart had some big shoes to fill after the departure of Craig Kilborne and he did so successfully. Let's start with the changes of the set, the desk use to be a long counter and the host got lost because of it. The Daily Show went thru several changes, the long desk got gradually shorter, but the copycat couch of The Tonight Show that never fit the image stayed on. The latest transformation is the most successful, the camera zooms in on a plain contemporary desk and the outdated couch has given way to a simple chair. Getting down to business, Jon Stewart is not a wannabe reporter he is a comedian that reports for the most part political news like very few can or could get away with. It is amazing how much can be accomplished with a smile on the face, it is equal opportunity satire at its best. The show is a must see for political junkies, viewers that are not up to date on what is happening on the political scene will miss th... Read more

Both funny and intellegent. He is obviously liberal, so if you are conservative, I can see why you may not like him, but The Daily Show is COMEDY. If you want sound political analysis, you shouldn't look on Comedy Central. Comedians always make fun of the president (Stewart certainly had a field day with Clinton) it comes with the territory.

Being liberal and knowing that Jon Stewart himself is also liberal, I'll try to stay focused on his performance in the show and not on his personalities or viewpoints. Jon Stewart is a talented comedian. I am amazed every night at how well he can make something so serious as politics so funny. He takes advantage of his stellar guests by asking them different questions which display other facets of their personalities. His humor is hardly stupid; instead, he is quick and witty, quickly pointing out silly holes and fluff in politics and politicians.

Absolutely hilarious! I watch The Daily Show every night. :) The jokes are always very funny, and part of what makes Jon Stewart so funny is just his facial expressions after someone says something stupid.
