"That's why you never saw one of their albums or heard them on the radio" I remember when they were constantly on Mtv and were on an episode of the simpsons. Also they were Nirvana's favorite band and toured with them in 1991. Yep, you're very stupid!

Oh fucking boy. They were so innovative they chose 'Sonic Youth' as their band name. This band sucks so hard, no light or sound escapes. That's why you never saw one of their albums or heard them on the radio. Even when total crap was popular.

One of the best bands of the 1980s who are happily still wheezing along today. The music is jangly and edgy and holds you constantly dangled above a snarling chaos of electric guitars and static feedback, which rises up occasionally and snaps at your heels, and then ultimately pulls you down into the maelstrom. At moments like this, their music reminds very much of the symphonies of Glenn Branca, and indeed I believe that some of the members of Sonic Youth worked with Branca, which explains a lot. Well worth a listen, especially the 'Daydream Nation' recording.

While they may have influenced many bands I never really cared for them with the exception of a few songs. It seems that in recent years they musically have improved.

Sonic Youth, to say the least, is an interestingm unique band. They are noisy and discordant, and at times twisted and sadistic. They are extremely unconventional and at times will just randomly start playing staticky noises, that can go on for minutes at a time. Also, their lyrics are needlessly obscure, and many of their songs seem to be random phrases just slapped together. However, they are talented musicians who do put out unique, sometimes really good music. Some notable songs are Teenage Riot, Sugar Cane, and Peace Attack. Though their later albums are more mellow, they stem from an anger which I don't think even they know the origin.

Very original stuff. Expressive as hell and they don't really compare to anything. obviously more recent bands like seafood have taken a lot from sonic youth though sonic youth didn't actually invent noise-rock i'm afraid scre4384om. There's been a great deal of noise music around since the 1930s. honestly! one of the first noise rock bands i've heard are called white noise but dont be put of by the 60s rock label thats put in them. theyre very cool though they sometimes jump into frighteningly computer-gamey music. mostly very dark though. all SY fans check them out!

this band is probably the best in this category. compared to all these other worthless bands (evanescence, linkin park, static x) their in a league of their own

One of the most influential bands ever. The have inspired more bands than you know. They are the Beatles of indie rock.

Best band ever. From their earlier work like Daydream Nation and Sister to Murray Street, they keep writing beautiful, complex, textured songs. Personally, I prefer Thurston's songs more than Kim's or Lee's but they're all amazing. If you haven't seen them live, you're missing out on one of the best experiences you'll ever have.

Sonic Youth are one of my all-time favourite bands. They are a rare example of a band that are completely self-taught, and who do everything wrong instrumentally, but the end result is sheer brilliance. I tend to think of them less as a band than a group of painters who use sounds and feedback instead of paint and canvas. Very few bands can play the sounds that describe the way I feel inside somedays, but these people can produce unbearable tension and ugliness and then resolve them into unimaginable beauty over the course of a single song. Everything they do is beautiful, and I hope they continue to produce music for many years to come.

Sonic Youth are legends. They're so original. Personally I like more their rocky stuff, but I do appreciate their other songs. I can imagine why they're an example towards so many bands. But I'll never want to hear any pre-programme of theirs. The ones that I saw last year were pretty awful. Love them

Sonic Youth ROCKS!!! They are not very popular in the place where I come from...at least I thought... I wanted to visit the concert in Paradiso Hall in Amsterdam but I just heard that it's sold out!!! Where the hack are all the Sonic Youth fans in Holland? Sonic Youth deserves much more attention than some of the bands of today! Because they are real! They make music for already 20 years and thats what's so special about them! They are not one-day-fly's like the most artists are... They have never been popular and maybe thats why they are still making music on a very high level. I have very great respect for Sonic Youth!!!!!

Sonic Youth have released many excellent recordings and all of them have that unique quality that makes one want to turn it up and rock out. Even their moodier stuff like what's on NYC Ghosts and Flowers is "rocking". This band's musicianship is excellent as well as highly creative. They put on fabulous live shows as well, blending rockin' mixes of various songs from their many recordings and playing oh so well... My personal favorite recording is Daydream Nation, which I first heard in the eighth grade and left an extraordinary lasting impression on me.

True innovators. You have to be in a certain mood for SY -- but once you're there, there's no one else that compares.

They are the best of their genre (Avant-garde noise rock). They have inspired many bands like nirvana and placebo. and they have inspired bands to even make a new music category noise-rock. Thurston moore was the man who found beck. They have played rock versions of free jazz songs and even classical music! They have made 2 labels to help new musicians. Do i really need to say more?
