One of my favorites from the era. Although I was not a huge fan of Hepburn, and Bogie has become "larger than life" he really only made about 5 good movies. He and Hepburn are terrific in this one. The only nit to pick would be the ending is a stretch, and the Germans are a slight bit cartoonish. Still and excellent flick. One of John Huston's best.

John Huston makes a great Heart of Darkness in reverse movie. My criticism is that Bogart always played the same character, and Kate Hepburn was always mildly annoying. What is fun is to compare Guide Us Now oh Great Jehovah, performed by Robert Morely and Kate at the beginning of the movie with the Welsh version, Cym Rhondda, sung by the miners in How Green was My Valley? The film is notable for being filmed on location.

great movie with Katherine Hepburn, and Humphrey Bogart. I put off seeing this movie because I did not think I would like it. this turned out to be a good movie. Katherine Hepburns character is a missionary in Africa with her brother during world war 1. Humphrey Bogart is sort of a mailman who delivers goods to this area. Rosie's brother dies after an attack on the village and Charlie helps get Rosie out of the area and down the river on the African Queen his steam boat.they go through some adventures along the way dealing with the treacherous river, and end up caring for each other even though they are very different in personalities. Both actors do a very good job and Humphrey Bogart even won the oscar for his role.

Remade years later with Wayne and Hepburn as Rooster Cockburn, this is better. Bogart is brilliant, and Hepburn is strong. Great script and great direction.

A fantastic movie. I always love Bogey, but even Hepburn is great in this one (she's great, but not one of my faves). Reminds me of "Swept Away..." a bit (the Italian classic, not the dumb Madonna crap). There's adventure, comedy, etc., but there's an undercurrent of sexual tension in it - note the metaphors, her having an orgasm going down the rapids, and them getting it on by the middle, when they've fallen in love. Every romance adventure movie since, like Romancing the Stone, uses the same plot devices, character development, etc. Despite all that, you really see first rate acting. These 2 shouldn't work together, but they do. I almost wanted to do Hepburn! Made me rethink the idea of missionary work.

Great movie, mainly because of the interraction between Hepburn and Bogart. You feel like you are part of the ride as they go up the river.

Bogart and Hepburn battle for survival against the sweep of a broader, encompassing world war. Hepburn's character is perfectly in-tune with the situation, which may be unappreciated by younger viewers who do not understand that people were often that way in reality. Bogart is crusty to perfection, only learning reluctantly that Hepburn can make a real contribution to his chances of survival and his life.

Two wonderful actors!!! With such weak characters at the beginning, they make people you wanna help and support in their adventures.

nice and simple love story. it's sweet without being too cheesey. an old movie that's actually fun to watch (speaking from my view as a citizen of generation x - all coked-out on eye-candy movies).

Bogart and Hepburn. Prim and cocky. Lace parisol and blood sucking leeches. And that plucky old boat being dragged through the weeds. AAA, it doesn't get any better.
