I get what they were going for. They were trying to capture the mystical allure of the game. Baseball has no clock and knows not the bounds of time. It missed the mark for me. It was flat. You knew that it would all work out in the end. You knew that the Costner character's ridiculous faith that something magic was going to happen would be fulfilled. The happy ending was written all over the first act. I found myself sitting there waiting for it to play out with no sense of anticipation or tension. I think it was Ray Liotta who played Shoeless Joe Jackson - the story should have focused more on his character being trapped in the void of time because of his history. Liotta is capable great performances. I also remember that Eight Men Out came out around the same time and it was a far better film.

I like baseball and I state that this feel good movie is o.k. It is the type of flick that you see once but have no urge ever to watch it again. I might have been put off somewhat as I could not finish the Kinsella novel on which this movie is based.

"Field of Dreams" is another one of those pleasant and inspiring movies that gives you a downright good feeling inside. A fitting movie for Father's Day.

This is a wonderful story and a great movie. I own one of the first versions of the DVD. I was always hoping there would be a version with a better surround soundtrack. The Field of Dreams Blu-ray edition's audio is actually better, but only marginally so. The video is really good, too. Some of the darker scenes on DVD had some noticeable artifacts. In the Blu-ray edition, they seem to be gone. There are plenty of extras, but I don't have a lot of time to enjoy them so I won't review them here. I'd recommend this Blu-ray edition only to this movie's enthusiasts or folks who have a Blu-ray play and not the DVD edition of this movie.

It was 1991, three years after the movie's release, it was a saturday afternoon and I was at a friend's house and she suggested we watch "Field of Dreams", I said "what's it about?" she said "it's a baseball movie!", I perked up, I said Okay, I said "who's in it?", she says "Kevin Costner". I kind of rolled my eyes because I wasn't too keen on Kevin Costner but I said okay, lets do it, so she advised me to shut up while the opening credits rolled because it gave some background about the life of the characters so I did just that and for the rest of the entire movie, I was hooked, not only with the movie itself but the music. Please note though, that, while being catholic, I am not a very religious minded person and my thoughts about the spiritual aspects of this movie I will leave out of this review. The Theme of the movie itself is what sold me on it, the relationship that the Costner Character, Ray Kinsella, had with his father in the movie, now, I, myself, had a great relation... Read more

I think this movie gets a lot more love than it deserves, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it the first time I saw it. I know that long-dead baseball players emerged from corn fields to play on the baseball field Kevin Costner built, but the most hard-to-believe aspect of this movie was Costner's wife's tolerance level. I know a lot of wives who would pack their bags if their husbands even talked about the stunts Costner pulled in this movie.

It was a decent movie, but not a great movie. Maybe I should rate it higher since it is one of the few movies set in and filmed in Iowa (my home state), but I can't give it much more than three stars, as it just wasn't that entertaining. My dislike of baseball probably has something to do with that.

I am not even a baseball fan and I thought this movie was decent. Bottom of the list? At least it is better than Kevin Costner as Kevin Costner in Dances with History Revision.

I rather liked it, plus the "if you build it, he will come" line has been a source of questionable humor for me for some time...

Corny. Ridiculous. Emotionally pornographic-esque in its attempts to move you to love it soooo much. But. . . I loved every single minute and shot of this Hallmark-card to baseball and distant jackass father figures. Never let it be said that senor CS has no heart. It beats within a steel cage. . . .and when James Earl Jones gives those lines "THIS FIELD, Ray. . ." only the coldest and emotionally-deprived bastards feel nothing. I realize that I have officially checked my brain in the door with this one- but it's the "Thelma and Louise" for men- it's the male emotional roller-coaster, ladies. Buy this DVD for your sports-loving man right now and put on that sleazy outfit he loves and you have written a check you'll cash for a whole year. If you build it/ wear it/ give it to me/ take care of my needs I will indeed. . .err. . .emm. . .COME!

"Field of Dreams" is my favorite baseball film and a CLASSIC of the drama genre. Everything about this film is PEFECT (just like Ray Kinsella says "It's better than that, it's PERFECT). James Earl Jones gives what I believe to be his GREATEST performance in "Field of Dreams". My favorite scene is the one where Doc "Moonlight" Graham comes back to save Ray's daughter from choking. I should mention here how GREAT Burt Lancaster's performance is too. This movie is all about one thing: Second chances. Anyone who understands this will find the movie very moving. "If you build it, he will come"

One of the great moments in cinema history when Kevin plays catch with his dad- makes me cry like a baby every time I see it.

I have personal reasons for being very fond of this movie, but I think it is probably Costner's best performance. Together with fine work by the rest of the cast, a well written script and some beautiful cinematography, this is a very enjoyable film.

A very well-done movie with a feel-good attitude through almost the entire film. Great performances from James Earl Jones and Kevin Costner don't hurt, along with the great scenery. Great ending as well!

This is my all time favorite movie. Every minute of it was great, I didn't even mind his annoying hippie wife. Even Costner acted with a little personality, and Lioatta did a great job of playing Joe. Lancaster was great, everyone was. This story brought a tear to my eye more than once. I remember the first time I saw it on USA, I was moved like I never was moved before. Before I saw this, I didn't think I could be emotionally effected by movies. I was very, very wrong.

This is a movie that my entire family loves and always gives the thumbs-up to. On a cold Saturday night when we're all staying in together what can be better than a worthy movie to make your weekend? We've watched loads...'The Bridges of Madison County', 'Shakespeare in Love', 'Memento'...all fine films. But 'Field of Dreams' is arguably the one we take in most of all. Watch it and it's easy to see why...a straightfoward, simple story about a farmer who hears a voice whilst out in his corn field...he fears he's going crazy, but soon learns better...this voice could actually be a blessing on his confused life, if he does what he says...build 'it' and 'he' will come. The result? He tears down his cornfield and builds a baseball pitch, in the hope of attracting the 'ghosts' of dead baseball players. Result...success, but that's only the start of a long and powerful spiritual journey upon which he must embark to achieve his overall aim. Beautifully delivered with some fine performa... Read more

W P Kinsella is an American treasure and this movie may actually be as good as his book (titled Shoeless Joe). Costner and the always-excellent James Earl Jones shine like angels. If you like baseball movies, and I love them, this is a great film. If you don't like baseball moves, but like films about characters who persevere and follow their dreams, this is still a great film.

I really liked this movie.A real feel good kind of movie. Kevin Costner plays a man who hears a voice in his corn field "If you build it, he will come"It turns out to be a baseball field which he builds in his cornfield. Months later Shoeless Joe Jackson shows up to pay a game soon other famous baseball players from the past show up. He still gets messages which prompts him to go to New York to get a writer played by james Earl Jones. What I love about this movie is it is about second chances and reconciliation that Ray has with his late dad. A chance to patch up a past with his dad. There are some great actors in this movie.I am not a huge baseball fan but i found myself cheering for the the past baseball players who had a chance to play the game they loved so much. Burt Lanchaster was also great in his role.I would really give this about a 4.5.

wow, not just a baseball movie. I loved it for a variety of reasons, but I really think that 'baseball' was just a vehicle for the expression of sorrow, regret, and reconciliation between a father and a son. Watched it maybe a dozen times, the last 20 minutes always chokes me up. We all look at our parents differently when we get older. We usually get an opportunity to mend fences. Kevin Costner's character had no way to reconcile with his dad, except thru the field of dreams. James Earl Jones is great in a supporting role and provides many, many great quotes in the final scenes of the movie.

Fields Of Dreams was a movie that they were selling at Burger King when he was released on VHS. My grandmother picked up and copy and loved it. Me on the other hand thought it was a mess, and that Kevin Costner was a total fool. Only for the desperate.

Just a baseball game? Yeah, yeah, well it shows how if we listen to our inner voices, a new life can emerge out of what seems like a hopeless situation. We all are in search of our field of dreams... listen, and we can have it too.

While I would not bother seeing any of Kevin Costner's recent movies, Field of Dreams, is a timeless story that I would watch anytime. It showcases the heartwarming spirit associated with baseball. I got shivers when 'Shoeless Joe Jackson' emerged from Costner's cornfields. This should easily be America's favorite movie about America's favorite pasttime.

a nice american baseball movie. This was before the roof caved in on Kevin Costner's career.
