I fed my 5 yr old cat Iams for 5 months until this past week when I had to rush her to the vet now she has to have medication daily because the Iams cat food caused her to have problems with her liver. I just hope that the medication gets her well because the bill was over $400 for tests and the medicines and having to get her rehydrated. I am NEVER feeding my cat IAMS Proactive health or any Iams product EVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IAMS uses dogs in their massive testing facility in the mid west. These poor animals don't stand a chance. BOYCOTT ANYTHING IAMS. You're only supporting the use of dogs in a research facility! They also have changed ingredients over the years & are not as 'high quality' as they tout. There are MANY more high quality foods out there to choose from.... Blue Buffalo, Innova & Solid Gold just to name a few. Do your homework, before putting your hard earned money into something sordid.

It's sad that Iams is supposed to be one of the best foods to give cats and dogs, but it's made by P&G, who are know to perform awful tests on animals.

Lacey was on IAMS Puppy when she was 4-7 months old back in 2009.As a puppy, she had a very difficult time digesting their food.It was only after 1 month(5 months old) that she was able to digest the food by itself.

People should stop writing reviews like "ITS POISON IN A BAG" "YOUR DOG WILL DIE IF HE EATS IT". Want a real review? Go to www.dogfoodadvisor.com/ This website breaks it down and explains step by step what the ingredients are and if they are good or bad. They rate it professionally and you would be surprised to see that Iams natural and Iams Puppy is 3 out of 5 stars. Which is ok but not the best. Many people should understand that a certain food might make a dog sick but not kill them, the only thing i heard that can kill dogs is Chocolate, other than that stop exaggerating its not what reviews are for. Be honest and considerate, many people can not afford brands like Wellness or Solid Gold, so they would look for something that's under the "ok" section. A lot of people on this site also make every food seem so bad except for a couple, that's not right.

We have had dogs all our lives and have always feed them IAMS. Our last two dogs Tyler a german shepherd lived to the ripe old age of 16 with no health problems and a very active life, our other dog Max a mixed breed Rot, German Shepard, hound etc also lived to the age of 15 or 16. Both were large dogs 75 to 85 pounds. Something in IAMS must be right!!!!!!!!!!

Awful! I was looking at the ingredients of the Iams "natural holistic" line. They are so funny. They have caught on to the fact that people dont want corn in dog/cat food.. SO they call it Maize. Good job P&G! Im sure you are fooling alot of people with that one! Still using by-products though, guess you cant list that as something else..

Iams is the worst food ever? With Kibbles 'n' Bits and Pedigree in the mix? And don't even get me started on the generic stuff. Most Iams formulas have a meat ingredient as the first ingredient. Sometimes its actual meat (good), and sometimes it's by-product (not so good). They could use more meat, but you can always add meat in the form of canned food or real meat. Because it's so easy to adjust the meat content of a food, I don't believe "low meat content" a reason to completely disregard any brand. But, their meat quality earns them -1 star. They lose a star for fillers, too. Corn, sorghum, brewer's rice... the list goes on. Fillers, as you know, are simply there to cheaply bulk up the food, and therefore, earn more profit for the company. My point is that, while Iams may not be the greatest food in the world (and trust me, it isn't), it's not nearly as bad as some make it sound. I still believe that Iams is a poor-quality brand. For the same price as a bag of Iams, you can get... Read more

P & G Pet Food Products sold me tainted food and my dear dog is terribly sick due to this. I reported the incident to them on July 31, 2010 when the recall was announced. My dog has been terribly ill since eating this food – in fact all 4 of my dogs got sick from the carelessness of IAMS. My 8 year old dog isn’t getting better and was hospitalized this week for 3 days and still is not improving! IAMS did THIS to him! Then to add insult to injury IAMS has the WORST customer service EVER, rude to say the very least; not to mention the poor quality control. NEVER did they follow up and get back to me. Per IAMS’s request, I gave them my vet information. IAMS never followed through as they said they would do – BIG SURPRISE from such incompetent of an organization. After calling them yesterday and advising them of EXACTLY what they did to my beloved dog they became even more rude and uncaring. I advised them I was contacting the BBB, the States Attorney’s office and the FDA... Read more

My Rottweiler-Bassit Hound mix has been having joint problems. We were feeding her different food besides IAMS. We then started feeding her science diet and her joint problems went away! Unfortunately the wallet was emptying at $50 a bag. So we switched to the green bag of IAMS. It had the same effect and cost $30 less! My dog is happy and playful with much energy! This food is great. I dont see why people are rating it so poorly.

Every time a pushy, annoying, over-zealous vet recommends this brand of dog food to me, I suddenly get the burning urge to grab a bag of Iams, and forcibly shove it down their pants. I would make their experience more pleasant - or torturous - by letting them stroke a bag of Science Hills Diet, on top of that. Seriously. If you love the damn company so much, have sex with it, but leave my wallet the fuck alone when it comes to nutritional consultation. I will not have your overly-friendly manipulation tactics, nor your blatant bullshit.

Every pet owner needs to read the ingredients that pet food companies put in the pet food, it's disgusting. If you can't pronounce the ingredients, research them on line. These big companies are killing our animals. I bet no one at Iams, feed their own beloved pets this tainted food. The first 3-4 ingredients should be meat, not chicken by products ( feet, beaks, intestines, basically the crud they sweep up off the floor) or corn products, dogs can not digest corn, wheat products are the # one allergies in dogs, why is this put in every dog food on the market. WAKE UP PEOPLE, AND RESEARCH WHAT YOU ARE FEEDING YOUR PETS.

I have a 3 year old Weimreiner who has been eating Iams ever since and he is super healthy , coats great , ect....He is on Healthy Naturals which was an easy crossover from the green bag Iams. I tried to give him blue buffalo and even a few table spoons of the stuff and he had THE gnarliest gas, it was alien, not anything near human. Anyhow, i add chicken or a great suppliment is Evangers canned beef, chicken, duck, venison to mix in . 100% meat. Iams haters have way too much time on their hands!

I rarely comment on consumer products, but I felt that Iams dog food could be an exception. I have two beagles. One is two years old and the other is a four month old puppy. The older one is a picky eater, and the puppy will eat anything. Recently, I switched their food over the course of a week to a premium dog food with an excellent reputation. What a disaster! For a week, they both had runny stools and the oldest one vomited daily and became lethargic. To that end, I narrowed it down to the food. In an effort to stop the decline, I went to my local "big box" store and grabbed two small bags of Iams dog food. One for the puppy and one for the older one. In just one day of eating the food, there is a remarkable change. Both were full of energy, no more runny stools, and no vomiting. I am AMAZED! I thought that the change to Iams would take at least three or four days to help. I have never used Iams dog food before, but I have used other premium brands (Blue Buffalo, We... Read more

ALSO deserves zero stars along with Hills. If the food contains corn it is crap and if the FIRST ingredient is corn it is really crap. IAMS gave my puppy bloody stools and projectile vomiting. Look on the internet and you will find MANY people who's dogs had the same symptoms while on the food. HORRIBLE. Search IAMS and died to get a real eye opener. Feed your dog Fromms Gold that contains no corn and no wheat and who's first ingredients are: Duck, Chicken Meal, Chicken, Brown Rice, Pearled Barley, Oatmeal, and Merrick canned and you will see the world of difference or better yet, COOK YOUR OWN dog food.

Wow, the below quote is EXACTLY what my 3 Goldens are going thru now! : "Second, their skin and coats. My dogs have never been scratchy, but their skin became so dry on this food that they were constantly itching. It got so bad that I became convinced they had fleas, but they didn't. This food completely dried out their skin, and their fur became dry and was falling out MUCH more than normal." I have just switched to another brand with no wheat, corn, or soy. I had eliminated all other causes of the scratching, and only the food/diet was left. I think the new Iames formula with "prebiotics" in 48 pound bags was the start of my problem. I hope more people post here with their results. EDIT: As soon as I switched to Kirkland Brand from Costco they began improving. A month later they were back to normal and loving their new food and their coats are now fine. I think this proves what the problem was.

I am putting bad and that is because in the general idea of feeding dogs I would think that dog owners would want other dogs to be treated well also. I notice that IAMS is answering these also which kind of makes me wonder. I had noticed before a complaint about PETA about them. I did look into it so it is just not good. Then I saw of course that Procter and Gamble bought it and they are bad on animal testing. I looked for the latest info. It seems they have stopped the outside testing with complaints but are still doing 'feeding testing' at their business. An animal organization looks in but they do not let PETA go in. It still sounds suspicious to me. So if there is other dog food available that doesn't do that it might seem a chance to go buy that instead. The best info seems now to be on this link that I have it from for now. PETA has complaints but they seem to be from years ago. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iams

**UPDATE - avoid this stuff. It's full of synthetic and processed crap. I recently switched from IAMs to Cal. Natural. Cal. Natural, though a little pricier, makes my boy, Blue, happy and healthy. * ORIGINAL - The vet recommended this brand for my still growing dog for its nutritional value. Blue loves the lamb flavored IAMs, but I give him the "Smart Puppy" food because he needs all the help he can get in that department.

Not only is Iams the worst dog food ever, I would never feed it to my dogs because I love them. There is nothing good about Iams, as it is full of by-products and corn. There are LOTS of bad things about it, though. For example: Iams doesn't really want your dog to have the high quality nutrition it needs. All the things that Iams says are most often lies. I USED to feed my first dog, a Papillon, Iams ONLY BECAUSE HER BREEDER RECOMMENDED IT. That was a big mistake! Once I found out that Iams conducts cruel animal tests on innocent cats and dogs, I immediately swithched to Beneful. Today both of my dogs are on BLUE Buffalo Small Breed. I would have to say Iams is not a good choice if you love your dog or cat. I don't recommend Iams, the vet says Iams is terrible ( really, who wouldn't?), and I don't allow my precious dogs to go around that "pet food". I would give it 0 stars if I could. Here are foods I recommend: BLUE Buffalo, Royal Canin ( it's one of the best foods out there), Natu... Read more

Our three year old Black Lab has been fed Iams since we got her as a puppy. I wouldn't say that she loves it but she has always eaten it without refusal. We gave her the puppy formula when it was appropriate and she has had the green bag, the chicken bag and the lamb bag. SHE IS A VERY HAPPY AND HEALTHY, WONDERFUL DOG. I am retired and spend a lot of time with her. She relies on me and mirrors my moods, which luckily, are predominantly happy ones. I don't know how Iams tastes because I never ate it. I trust the name and don't read the ingredients. Funny that many people are concerned about feeding their dogs by-products. I had a friend that worked for a rendering plant. Well guess what? Did you know that a major brand cereal manufacturer regularly bought chicken feathers to be ground up and included in their cereal under the guise of protein. I thought he was BS ing me because I ate that brand of cereal. I finally believed him when I later found a piece of feather in a sealed box of... Read more

I accidentally bought Iams healthy naturals dog food for my 7 year old dog. He became lethargic and wouldn't eat it half of the time. He would throw up at least a few times a week and he'd strain when passing stools. The food gave him extremely bad gas, he was constantly scratching himself and you could just tell he was not right. I had bought the large bag and he ate Iams for about one month when I decided to throw the rest out and buy my usual brand for him. It's been two days since the switch and he's already back to his normal self. I'm very disappointed with this food and won't be recommending it or buying it again.

10 years ago I started working at a Dog Kennel. Up until that point in time I had been raised with the thinking that all dog foods are the same. It didn't take me longer then a few weeks working at the boarding kennel to realize that not all dog foods are the same! I currently have two dogs. A purebred American Bulldog who is prone to skin allergies, and a lab mix who has an iron stomache and proves it by regularly swallowing and regurgitating rocks from the yard. I have been feeding both of my dogs Iams since they were puppies. I have no complaints about the food, but have noticed that the ingredients went a little down in quality when Proctor & Gamble purchased the food from the Iams Company and started selling it in grocery stores. I have noticed that my dogs eyes have gotten a little goopier and their coats aren't as shiney as they once were. If I thought I could get away with switching foods and not having my American Bulldog have problems I would, but I would switch to I... Read more

Do not like IAMS at all. Maybe they should spend less money on all their fancy commercials and spend more on quality ingredients. Then I though as I was looking for something decent and affordable for the barn cats so I thought sure I wouldnt feed IAMS to my pets at home but the barn cats may like it well not for that price I almost fell to the floor. I was expecting it to be cheap because the ingredient list is not that great but I guess I was wrong. I pay half of what IAMS costs and the barn cats eat a food with no by-products yes it contains corn but only once and in the 5th ingredient so what I ended up feeding is alot better then IAMS. Its over priced bag of corn. I would never feed it to my dogs, house cats or barn cats.

(My apologies for any bad spelling) I love the Iams Company. There are a lot of people here who have no idea what their talking about, especially with by-products! Yes, some by-products are not safe or cleaned for that matter but not all by-products are created equal! The By-Products (Which contain high quality protein) used by the Iams Company (Which produces Eukanuba as their premium brand) always uses clean, cut chicken cartelidge and intestins! They do not use BEAKS, FEATHERS or any other un-usable source in their nutrition. I personally believe that their are few brands that compare to the quality in Eukanuba!! And as for IAMS, they shouldn't be degraded in a grocery store! IAMS & Eukanuba has CHICKEN or LAMB as their 1st ingredient in every formula and all those other brands which are in grocery stores NEVER have CHICKEN or LAMB as their 1st ingredient! Its usually Ground Yellow Corn. And that goes for Purina, Kibbles n'Bits, Pedagree & every other brand out there! High quali... Read more

My fiance and I were arguing about dog food the other night. I thought I would check out what other people were saying. Just as I thought, like my fiance, there are a lot of other people out there with too much time on their hands. I have had my Boxer/German Short Hair on Iams, in the green bag, for 9 years now. His metabalsm is great and he eats two bowls a day. His coat is always admired by other dog owners. He is full of energy and still acts like he is a pup. I have never had him in the vet for any major health problems. He poops solid every time unless he is stressed. He seems to follow my mood swings. Perhaps your dogs are doing the same. Maybe your dogs are having reactions to food not because it is bad food, but because the owner is a neurotic, high strung know it all. Christ! Dogs eat other dog's and cat's poop. Is there any nutritional value in poop? If there is, maybe humans are missing the boat? Poop is all by-product! My sister's dog eats horse poop and he is 11 years old... Read more

Iams has been an excellent food for my Golden. They base their formulas on research not hype. Many bad reviews are from people with an agenda...not folks that actually used the food. Iam's made my Golden's metabalism much heatlthier.  He was less hungery throughout the day (less begging) and his weight became healthier.  He loves the stuff.  His coat and skin improved with Iams.  Iams is supposed to be less quality compared the the other food made by Iams, Eukanuba...but I see little if any difference in the ingredients.  I suggest people look up the Iam's site...it is interesting to learn about their research and the changes made to their formulas because of it.  They don't mistreat dogs or cats.....

There seems to be a lot of people placing comments here about how "IAMS is a great food you idiots are brainwashed to think otherwise blah blah blah..." so I'll say right now that this review is not based on what's on the label (ingredients, etc...), it's based on my own experience with the food. I bought it blindly on a recommendation from my vet, me being clueless at the time about dog food, and that is the last time I ever trust my vet on this issue. I'll state for the record that I'm not sure how anyone can truly feel that a corn-based food is equal to or even better for dogs than a meat-based food. That conclusion that some people have come to really has me puzzled. It seems like a no-brainer to me, but to each their own. First, the taste. There was very little I could do to convince my dogs to eat this food. They wouldn't even touch it without something extra in it. I have never in my life mixed anything into my dogs food to get them to eat, but with IAMS, it was the only way t... Read more

Well, I don't believe anything that PETA has to say--they have been classified as a terrorist organization! I don't agree with cruelty to animals--I know that shocking and horrible things go on in this world. I don't know whether or not all the hype about Iams being cruel to their animals is true or not, but I do know that I don't like this food. I have two Jack Russells and two cats. I fed Iams to my animals for years, and two of them developed fairly serious skin and weight problems, and only did moderately well. I did try Beneful for the dogs for a short time, and my dogs did better on that than they did on this food. Now I have switched them all to Natural Balance, and I have never seen healthier happier animals! Their skin and weight problems are gone, and they are playful and full of energy. They only picked at their Iams, but they gobble their Natural Balance. I wouldn't recommend this food if you can afford something better and more wholesome (read the ingredients on the bag!),... Had my dogs on Iams for years one of them did o.k. till she died of cancer at 14 (unrelated, I'm sure). The other had a horrible skin and coat. I always blamed it on seasonal allergies, which in part it was, but when I switched to Royal Canin the improvement was immediate. This was several years ago, I am now more informed of dog food then I was then and I am sorry that my poor dog had to suffer as long as she did. She still is bothered by seasonal allergies, but I am glad that her food is no longer a contribution to her poor health. I would not recommened this food to anyone. Low meat content, and low quality ingredients make it a poor choice for dogs.

No.It all depends on the dog's immune and what its able to handle. There's been recalls on these expensive brands;there's always gonna be recalls no matter what. And on that case of corn gluten;dont blame the dog foods BLAME China for trying to kill our dogs;and what bout led that was found in children's toys from China. If usa was smart as we thought it was;itd wouldnt depend on other countries for inports and exports.& so at that iams isnt as bad as you put it out to be.Even my dad's dog lived 15 years from KIbbles n bits which by the way has by far the worst ingredients compared to what u guys are sa... I give this food one star because many of Iams foods have By-Products which have NO nutritional Value for animals. A by-product is not the meat it is the beak, feet, undevolped eggs of an animal. There is also too much grain in many of thier foods which are basically just fillers, your animal cannot digest that much grain, and you the consumer will be feeding your animal much more grain then they need to eat. Which down the line can cause digestion issuse's, a hard stool (the stool should be the consistancy of a Marshmello) Pica (when your animal eats and swallows rocks, sticks, sting, shoes, and more non-eadible items) a shorter life, and more.

Wild dogs, wolves, and all animals thrive on things like heads, feet, intestines and all parts of plants. In fact, many animals (and other societies) go right for these parts. It's easy to equate our westernized human standards to what all animals should be consuming - but, of course, has nothing to do what us or our pets need to thrive.

This is a decent food.  My dog has been pretty lethargic on it, which is totally out of character.  She hasn't gotten any diarrhea or vomiting from it however.  My dog hates kibble but liked Iams okay; she wasnt crazy for it or anything.  As far as a dog food you can pick up at Wal-Mart Iams is the better of the commercial varieties.  I am no longer going to feed my dog Iams because of her lethargy.

My Chihuahua/Dauchaund mix loves this food, especially the Toy & Small formula which has higher protein. The size of the kibble is perfect for his small teeth. My new vet commented on how great his ears look and told me to keep him on this food.

Iams is not bad for the price. It seems to be fairly comparable to other similiar quality foods. Iams does not torture animals. I have a friend that works at Iams headquarters. The animals get played with daily. The dogs have a large grassy play area and get to go out daily. She would not work for them if they were doing anything cruel. Beware PETA, they are currently interfering at a shelter a few counties away from me. They're idea of 'helping' the animals is to euthanize anything there immediatly.

I switched my dogs to Iams large breed dog food under the advice of my vet who told me that feeding my dogs Ol' Roy High performance nutrition dog food was no good for them. They did well on this food.... now they have the shits and act as if they are not being fed enough food, they eat each other's shit.... what the heck is wrong with this food???
