Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr together became the Beatles. The world went crazy with Beatlemania and even today over 50 years since they split they are the favorites of multiple generations of fans. People will flock to see cover bands just to get the feeling of what it would have been like to have been there back when. They had more than just musical talent. They were amazing songwriters even if at times some of them were a little out there. Their charm, looks, personalities and talent made them superstars.

The impact of the Beatles — not only on rock & roll but on all of Western culture — is simply incalculable. As musicians, the Beatles proved that rock & roll could embrace a limitless variety of harmonies, structures, and sounds; virtually every rock experiment has some precedent on Beatles records. As a unit the Beatles were a musically synergistic combination: Paul McCartney's melodic bass lines, Ringo Starr's slaphappy no-rolls drumming, George Harrison's rockabilly-style guitar leads, John Lennon's assertive rhythm guitar — and their four fervent voices.

Wonderful until drugs and John's mighty ego soured the group. Paul actually has the major talent.

I say the Beatles are a good source of fun music. I always like listening to their music and enjoy the uniqueness the songs of their well-created musical albums provide. It seems like eveyone has a fun time listening to their music when they pop up on on the radio or song mix... no matter who the listeners are, young or old. The Beatles are a true classic, I guess. Their songs are fun and safe to add to the background music songlist at any fun party or gathering, or even just to collect for one's own enjoyment. I think the Beatles are a great option for anyone wanting to listen to decent, catchy music.

The world began changing - for better and/or worse - with the rise of rock'n'roll (Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bo Diddley, Hank Ballard, etc.)... then there was schlock rock ( Fabian, Chubby Checker, etc.)... and American kids got turned off and turned on to folk music, and then came The Beatles who turned folkies onto Rock'n'Roll and then pissed all over it with their psychedelic English Music Hall album, Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The Rolling Stones had more hair (and more class); The Pretty Things had even more hair; and - at the time - I had more hair than the lot of 'em. Whether or not 'they were "Helpful or Harmful to Society" is debatable, but they sure got a lot of attention, and still do.

They're growing on me. I thought I'd give them another chance and I actually quite enjoyed most of Sgt Pepper's. Let's see if the rest of their albums do the same.

I'd argue that entertainers are pretty uniformly neutral, rather than helpful or harmful. They were damn entertaining, and made a lot of folks happy, which I guess could tip the scale towards "helpful." Although I suspect some of the people who were parents of teenage girls at the time of Beatlemania have a different opinion.

There is a saying that needs to always be remembered;  "All things can only be fully understood in the proper   context of their time". It's easy for anyone today to look back at The Beatles, or Elvis, or a trend like New Wave or Disco and say "Why was that so popular?" But unless you fully understand the times and environment in which all these things occurred,  you will never understand why.  Ultimately, it comes down to taste, what you like and what you don't like.  I myself do not care how many millions of copies a particular record has sold, if I hate it, I hate it, period, and I think most people feel the same.  The Beatles were innovators, saviors (rock was nearly dead when they arrived), and cultural icons.  I don't care for all of their music, especially some of the silly psychadelic era stuff,  but there is no denying that overall they created good, substantial, memorable music, and more importantly, they spearheaded a cultural revolution unlike anything ever seen before. So ... Neither helpful nor hurtful. Whether you are a fan or not (I'm not, for the record), they're just a music group.  On second, thought, they were kind of the orginal boy band, so maybe they were harmful to society in that they helped to unleash the likes of New Kids on the Block, and then more recently groups like N'Sync and the Backstreet Boys.

This group caused a lot of goofy attitudes and dress, i.e. the hippies and hair styles and more.  The Fab Four provided a lot of good entertainment, however, so "four" is appropriate.
