The had some great songs for a metal band of the 90's. The only reason I'm not giving them 5 stars is all this dimebag worship. He was a skilled guitarist but he wasn't the whole band. I appreciate the band as unit including phil ( what can I say dimebag worshipers he had the attitude and he was the singer). I do not mean to disbarage dimebag, it's just that the only reason people worship him is that he died prematurely. He was a skilled guitarist. Because people are stupid and fall into the James Dean trap, I have to take a star off.

The only bad thing about voicing your opinion on music is someone always trying to prove you wrong. Music is subjective. There is no right-no wrong-no good-no bad. Only opinion. Mine is-I love Pantera!!! Talk about bouncing off the walls. They do have a time & place.

Pantera started as a glam band, but as guitarist Diamond/Dimebag Darrell mastered more advanced techniques and the band as a whole became disillusioned with the image of glam and its general lack of substance they transitioned to a heavier sound. Then Phil Anselmo was brought in to handle the vocals and they became the slayers of grunge and banner-bearers of metal in the early 90's. Anselmo is a charismatic performer, unstable personality, and warped lyricist. They caught the attention of the rock consumer with COWBOYS FROM HELL, which has since become very overrated. The follow-up, VULGAR DISPLAY OF POWER was the heaviest thing many people had heard, and then came FAR BEYOND DRIVEN. Those two albums represent Pantera's best recording efforts and their heyday. They are necessary listening for those who want to know and understand American metal.

I used to despise Pantera. Over the past eight or so months, they've grown on me. Phil Anselmo is often derided, but, believe it or not, he could actually sing once upon a time (his vocal performance in 'Cemetary Gates' is unbelievable). I don't even mind his screaming. Dimebag (once Diamond) Darrell was a very good guitarist, Vinnie Paul added heaviness to the music, while Rex Brown was a decent enough bassist. On the other hand, their brand of 'groove metal' could get tiresome when exposed to it too often - they could also have used another guitarist. I'll give them a four.

OK, the Abbott brothers could play mean rock guitar and drums and as a group they were pioneering, I guess. Shame about the end result though and the fact they influenced new generations of sh*tty metal bands.

How can some of you people say that Pantera was horrible. They were making great original music while other bands were copying off each other. The only thing bad about Pantera is that they weren't around longer because they rocked.Rest In Peace Dimebag Darrell

phenominal metal band, their music was very intense, it really made you feel there more to the songs than just what you were listening to, dimebag easily one of the greatest guitarist to live and the metal genre was blessed to have him,(and his brother i.e.vinnie paul (drummer)) and phil could sing great (cemetary gates)and on top of being as good as they are, they were a good live act as well. basically i think they played metal that a lot more than just metal heads could relate to.

Pantera made some killer music. Their live shows were also very good. The only downside? Phil Anslemo. The guy was overbearing to the point you wanted to punch him. Every time I saw them in concert, he would just go into these rants. Shuddup and sing (scream) Phil!

The best true metal band ever. Metallica can't hold a candle to these guys. Not now anyway. Every single song, word, note is played with feeling, and if you said they sucked, I dare you to say it to any of their faces. Wish they'd get back together.

I guess their problems caused from partying to much and their wild lifestyle caused them to break up. It's to bad, these guys were an amazing heavy metal band. I followed them from around the time Cowboys From Hell came out and until Reinventing the Steel pretty much finalized their career...

Awesome band. The guitars are a little too trebly for me to listen for very long (hurts the ears) but they thrash super hard. Phil is also one of the best vocalists in metal, able to go from screaming to a soulful tenor throughout a single song. (Check out his work with Down, as well, southern fried sludge). I have liked these guys for over a decade, and wish them the best of luck in the future (not as a band, necessarily, but individually).

One of the greatest metal acts ever. No radio or video airplay and they're still able to come up with top 10 and #1 albums. Together, these guys make an ecletic sound all their own. The whaling and yet dynamic giutar playing of Dimebag Darrell, the steel tapping drumming of Vinnie Paul, Rex Brown hitting the bass, and the screaming voice of Phil Anselmo that just fits well with the music. This is a group worth checking out!!!!!
