I have been watching Cops ever since it started 20 years ago. The reruns are endless, appearing nightly on Tru TV and G4. I especially like the segments where the police are busting prostitutes and johns, especially when an undercover female officer is playing the "jail bait", so to speak. I also like the segments where the perpetrators are caught naked (Cops did at least a couple of special shows in which the criminals were in their birthday suits, including one shot in Cleveland, OH where a naked man breaks into a school and shoots off fire extinguishers.) Cops will go on forever...as long as there's crime, there will be Cops...already one of the longest running shows on TV.

This I pretty much wouldn't watch. I don't really want to watch the police. I have seen little bits of it. It is just odd because you hear what is going on and the arrested people lying. It is not especially interesting to me to watch the criminals that they have on it. Sometimes I would feel sorry for the people getting arrested. The cops can get carried away and they take advantage of the power.

I love this show. and its theme song. but the cops they show are usually "the good guys," none of that shooting with abandon we see on youtube.

I have some sort of deep-rooted problem with authority, and I generally believe that all of humanity is steeped with potential (and I don't mean the potential to fail, either). This show conflicts with both of these ideals on a fundamental level. I don't think I've ever made it through more than about 2 minutes before flipping the channel or (more likely) turning off the tv out of disgust for the popular media.

Use to watch it as a kid but now that im older the show is boring. I dont like cops in person much because of their large ego's and bad tactics but this show has no worth to it. There is no more excitement to this show.

I will have to disagree with oscargamblesfro on his comments.  While it is said that they keep showing the same things over and over ~ that is true.  But, until Criminals become a little more creative ~ expect that.  As far as the "glorification", I disagree.  The show was meant to show you what Cops go through ~ scary times, boring times, funny times.  Bottom line, if it's been done ~ a Cop has seen it.  I have seen the "po-po" let a lot of guys "go-go", so how can you say they aren't  being altruistic?  God Bless each and every Officer!  For those who say that Officers overreact ~ trying being there!  I have been~ and unless you also have ~ shut up!

Voyeuristic, simplistic, and boring.  It has the advantage, in the minds of TV producers, of being cheap to make, and it allows a few minutes of fame to an assortment of trailer trash and other scumballs who get to take their shirts off and shout abuse while they get cuffed.I always wonder how often the producers get requests for copies of the show from some of the "star" perps.

I very much agree with the analysis of edt4 on this one. It's basically the same damn thing every single time, a repetitive, simplistic, glorification of cops, riddled with cliches and patronizing, condescending, moral of the story type advice. In general, the people they chase down indeed are, as many here have noted drunken teenagers, shirtless rednecks, etc.

Voyeuristic police-state-mentality crap, although, as Bill Hicks once mentioned, it can exert an odd fascination all its own. Basically, we're treated to stalwart, relentlessly honest, yawningly decent, Mom's-Apple-Pie policemen in a variety of run-down American cities nabbing the "bad guys"...basically, poor moronic slobs who are too dumb or lost or permanently wasted or disoriented by life itself to sell drugs successfully, or prostitute themselves successfully, or panhandle successfully, or buy a clean white T-shirt successfully. In the episodes I've seen, the cops are always painfully aware that they're on camera, and are given to delivering tiresome, cliched platitudes about ol'-fashioned morality and the virtues of plain livin', sternly lecturing these dregs of society like some pedantic high school civics teacher. The dregs bearing the brunt of the lecture often look as if they're having trouble comprehending whether it's day or night, much less who they are or under what circum... Read more

I like this show. Its interesting TV that, unlike about 99.9% of "reality" shows, doesn't create a false enviroment with farfetched circumstances in order to capture real and interesting human drama. Also unlike other reality shows it views things from an empathetic standpoint rather than a judgemental and superficial standpoint. Very few other eality shows go as deep as cops goes. Although I'm sure the producer's goal is to make money off of the entertainment value of high speed pursuits and drug busts, that doesn't change the fact that the show has a very real human element to it.

I hate reality television with a passion... but this is REAL reality television. There is nothing more enjoyable than watching white trash and black people getting busted in their underwear. GUY IN THE YARD: Man, I didn't do sh*t to her. WOMEN ON THE PORCH: Take his ass off to jail! Priceless.

Cops is timeless you can watch the old shows in syndication and they are still relavent. Its fun to look at the old gas prices and notice how criminals are just as dumb no matter what decade they are in.

The cops I've seen on TV only support my low opinion of the officers. They overreact; spraying with pepper, twisting arms and jumping on a drunk's back. None of these people were threats yet the officers involved were screaming and acting like they were. After they called and received backup they detained the suspect and it was high fives all around for a job well done. The only thing they have room for in their oversized heads is their enormous ego. Brain power is not part of the equation.

This is my favourite reality show. I've grown up being familiar with police, especially since one of my family members was a police officer. I like Cops because it is not only an example of good winning over evil, it also shows us what police officers have to go through. I especially like it when the criminals resist arrest or they try to fight the police. I like watching this because the police always win ie I like watching the baddie get what he deserves. High speed chases and run aways are OK. But sometimes, the show can get a bit boring.

One of the few real reality shows. I cannot understand these people who rate crap like survivior higher yet that is just people voting off those they don't like, no real survival. Kind of funny how most of the Cops episodes seem to be in Atlanta, figures with its high crime rate.

I can't believe that show is still on. I understand why people watched it in the early 90's. But how can you have the desire to watch another guy being beaten up by a cop who hates his life?

Cops is the original, the kind, the trendsetter. All other reality programs pale by comparison because they are sadly derivative. The real accomplishment of this show is its pioneering status in the world of TV. How can you beat that?

COPS the first reality show that was ever produced has brought me many years of entertainment ! if it wasnt for this show, they never would have produced other reality shows, COPS was the first and still holds as the best reality show on TV, FEAR FACTOR is climbing up in a reality show category of its own, nothing can replace COPS nor be its equal in the ways of true lives and real events completely un-scripted, i feel this show will run for a longer time than even M*A*S*H, eventhough i was never a mash fan, it held the records for longest series, COPS has been the best and will always remain the best show on TV and no other show compares !

How can you not be impressed by a show that's been on 17 seasons, primetime, with a rerun for the 2nd half hour. It obviously is part of pop culture for reasons beyond the obvious.

I have been watching this since it first started and hardly ever get bored. I am quite interested in the psychology of the criminals and how the cops deal with them. It is hard to believe that there are people willing to put up with all the criminals crap. They have to be in great shape too because they sure do have to run fast to catch them!

Cops is endlessly entertaining, but I do remember it being a lot better several years ago. I always get a kick out of the people who try to run (and who often forget to put in their dentures before they take off), the people who cry that they didn't do it even though they have the crime on film, and the people who are just the oddballs of society. The only thing that bugs me is that the criminal always seems to be half-naked and screaming incoherently.

Entertaining to watch. I am puzzled as to why suspects do not notice the camera and lights when the cops enter their house or make no comments about it.
