I like some of Steve Miller's stuff though classic rock radio has destroyed his hits for me. If I hear Jet Airliner one more time I may go insane.

Fly Like An Eagle... then drop like a tu*d. That about sums it up for Mr Miller's career. A handful of decent tunes like 'Take the money and run' and 'Rock n me' and a vat full of dross e.g. 'Dance dance dance' and the atrocious 'Abracadabra'.....'Abra abra cadabra.. Im gonna reach out and grab yer' Inspired!

I would agree most with the review submitted below by "MooseKarloff." Most people only know the hits from 1973 on and maybe "Living in the USA." However, the earlier blues and psych material like the albums "Children of the Future" and "Sailor," plus tracks like "My Dark Hour,"( with the aid of none other than Paul McCartney) "Your Saving Grace," and "Little Girl" are far superior IMO. Certainly, with the exceptions of Santana and maybe Moby Grape, probably the most talented band of the "San Francisco sound" overall as far as musical ability goes. Four stars for the early stuff, 3 for the later. I'd give them a 3.5 if I could.

The Steve Miller Band is one of those groups with two distinct phases (eg Fleetwood Mac). The first incarnation of the band (1968-1972) was primarily rooted in blues/rock, but it was the second incarnation, starting with the 1973 full-length release The Joker (and the popularity of the title track), which garnered the most commercial (if not critical) success. From this period on, Miller used his highly distinctive guitar style to craft some of the most well known singles from that era that are still popular and covered today (eg Fly Like And Eagle, Take The Money And Run, Jet Airliner, and Abracadabra), as evidenced by the still popular compilation Greatest Hits 1974-1978. The end result is an artist who was/is more talented and influential than most rock purists would care to admit. Nevertheless, despite the strength of some of Miller's other full-length efforts (eg Fly Like An Eagle (1976)), the Steve Miller Band is essentially a great singles group with lots of compilations fro... SM's greatest recordings were done in the 1960s and very early 1970s: "Space Cowboy" "Kow Kow Calculator," "Seasons," "Never Kill Another Man," "Baby's House," "I Love You." By the time he was doing the The Joker and Fly Like An Eagle stuff, he was already well passed it. However, the early recordings are classics, so I have to rate him OK out of respect for that work. He's another one who should have gracefully retired, but maybe he needs the money too much.

I think that Steve Miller was the first tape that I saved my own money to buy in like 4th grade, when you start getting into music. Pretty funny. The Steve Miller Band is just a typical upbeat kind of band that has good songs to sing a long to. I now laugh that I used to like them so much. They do have some classics like 'Joker' and the song that you clap along with (I forget the name of it). The reason I laugh is because it makes me think of when I was younger and how goofy and awkward I was.
