I think this is a great neighborhood with city benefits as well as small town charm. I love Jay's Deli, Thinkers Cafe, Hazel's Kitchen, Chez Papa, Lingpa and Eliza's and the natural grocery store. They have a fabulous library that is very quiet and has children's programs that are great for all ages.  It's a very beautiful area with views of the mission and noe from some parts of the neighborhood and views of downtown, the bay bridge and even some distant views of the top of the golden gate bridge and the mountains from other parts. The community is very involved in keeping the neigbhorhood safe and making sure everyone is welcome. They really reach out to newcomers. There are a lot of families as well as younger people with no kids as well as retired folks. It's a nice mix.  When I leave to go to other busier areas for more action, I always end up feeling relief when I drive back to Potrero Hill to peace and quiet. The convenience to the highway is also great when you need to run erran... What do you mean, Potrero Hill is isolated? There is Club Mighty within walking distance just down the street. Sublounge on the east side.. SOMA and the mission are just short drives or cabs away. Oh yeah, there is that little place Bottom of the Hill.. have you heard of it? How about some sunday brunch bayside at the Ramp? The 4 French places? There are about 5 bus lines that criss-cross potrero hill. yes, you are far from Bart, but I walk to Cal Train at 22nd stret each morning to catch my ride to the silicon valley. yes, there are the Projects. It keeps the vibe real and the neighborhood diverse.

Up and coming, and has almost been completely gentrified unfortunately. If you're on the west side, you have great views of the mission and noe valley. The other side isn't quite as attractive. Some interesting restaraunts and a convention center at the foot of the hill where you can walk to now. For the "suburban" experience of the city I'd much prefer Bernal Heights or the Sunset.

If you want to live in the city without actually living in the city, this place is for you. It's got some phenomenal views, you can find some good deals on rent, and you've got a suburban feel. But - if you're looking to party, you'd better avoid it. You're pretty isolated.

I previously lived in Noe Valley but intentionally moved to Potrero Hill (north slope) for the safe community vibe and being so close to the city and access to freeways - especially the airport in 11 minutes. Quiet, safe, no or little crime, predominantly professional mix, singles and young families. Hip restaurants and classy cafes - especially Axis Cafe (carner 16th & 8th Sts) with it's indoor & outdoor dining, friendly staff and fantastic food. An extension of my living room (I hang out there a lot). Potero Hill is a place you never want to move from. My home has increased in value around 30% in 18 months. The views are secomd to none and the weather is the sunniest in San Francisco. Parking is great. People friendly, all the services - even a huge hardware store. The Potrero Hill shopping center is great.Bus service good but I have a car. The only downer is the distance from the Bart stn but not everyyone can be close to the Bart. All in all this is a go ahead part of the city that... Read more

Want to say you live in San Francisco without really living there? Then this is the neighborhood for you. You are totally removed from just about everything (nightlife, transportation, shopping, that energy of the City). Some people like this...but I think they are the same people that cannot wait to move to Marin or the East Bay when they have kids. The only plusses are that it is close to the 280 freeway (needed if you work in the South Bay), there are some tremendous views, and there is plenty of parking (becuase nobody wants to go there).

Impossible shopping, no direct transportation anywhere. Stuck between two freeways and a crime-infested black housing project. But the best weather in town, no tourists, and a very nice place to live.

Too isolated. BART and/or the underground MUNI need to be extended to this area. I like some of the old houses and the weather is nice, but it's just too far from downtown. I do not drive and I like convenience and speedy transportation.
