My childhood zoo (Philly) was of decent quality...but going to the zoo usually meant a group of kids. And you bet there was usually one loser/party anchor in the group.

Depends on the Zoo, some should be banned. The Atlanta and Knoxville zoos are good ones though, the animals seem more free and not 'caged.' Lots of fun And you name one little boy that doesn't enjoy the Monkey exhibit.

I remember going to the now defunct Vancouver zoo, to watch otters slide down concrete ramps, and psychotic polar bears wander in an endless, nodding, repetive oval, and penguins looking dirty and uncomfortable in August.  The thing I liked most were Howler monkeys that would swing through a huge cage, and fling stuff at the observers.  Their own shit, if at all possible, but anything else would do.

Boston has the worst zoos I know of. That's why I joined Rate It All. Every kind of animal you can think of is here.

Hey, I still love going to the zoo!  Heck, I have a year pass to the San Diego Zoo so I can go anytime I want for a year.

I still like to go to the zoo. They have changed considerably since I was a kid.

Going to the zoo is still a huge amount of fun for me. I love nature and it is great to be able to see the animals and learn a bit more about them.

I both loved and hated it. I loved the idea to being introduced to different animals around the world, but I always thought that those cages limitted their life and freedom - I wouldn't want to be caged!

Went to the zoo only a few times, most memorable visit to a zoo, was when I was in Winnipeg, when I was a kid, and saw a panda exhibit. To this day, I still like pandas alot.

My sister shared a fun story from her days working at Mystic Aquarium. It sounds like an urban legend to me but she swears by it. One day there was a kid with down syndrome who went to the aquarium with his family, and the family reported him missing. Everyone went looking for him and he turned up outside of a tank, soaking wet with a big smile on his face. He said he wanted to go for a swim. The family, relieved, brought him home and told him to take a bath and clean up. After a bit they heard all sorts of splashing from the bathroom so they decided to check it out. It was a baby penguin - the kid had grabbed a penguin from the tank and put it in his backpack.

Always a fond memory. The best zoo memory was when my dad took me to the Philadelphia zoo when I was about 18 or something (getting him out of the house was an accomplishment). We were at the zebra cage, while the zebras were in a rather amorous mood. An African American gent, looked at us, smiled, and announced loudly, Shot Time! 30 years later, me and my dad can't see a zebra on TV without saying, Shot Time!

I still like visiting the zoo; I look forward to the time I can take my little nephews and niece to the zoos or aquariums, once they're old enough.

When I was a kid we would go to the L.A. Zoo. But the real zoo in California, and probably just about anywhere else is the San Diego Zoo. This was great. My favorite exhibits then and now are the apes and monkeys. (probably the Tarzan thing) I equally, and maybe more so, enjoyed taking my kids when they were young. I hope they remember it like I do.
