We decided to give it a try after they replaced the Denny's near us with a completely new restaurant about a block from the original location. The restaurant was good and the food was ok. The waitress disappeared after serving our food so we weren't able to get drink refills. This is a pet peeve of mine because I normally drink coffee with my meal and stretching out a cup of coffee can be difficult.

Denny's is my home away from home. I go there often. They give me free newspapers that others left behind.

Whoever opened Denny's is a genius because they stumbled upon a golden truth: It's HARD AS HELL to mess up breakfast food. As long as you can tell the time, you can make a decent breakfast dish. The only problem is that it's pretty hard to have amazing breakfast foods.....which describes Dennys. As long as you don't burn em', pancakes are all the same and that's what Denny's relies on. The food requires little seasoning and preparation so you're always entitled for a decent meal. My issue with them is on the occasion they keep getting rid of everything I love. With this recession a lot of restaurants have been eliminating items from their menu and Denny's have been doing this for sometime. I used to love the Meat Lover's Skillet--it was salty, meaty, cheesy, and quite heavenly. It was ALSO a lot to eat.....back in the day. Now if I try to order that I get a 1/3 or the portion I used to get and no toast! I used to love the Breakfast Dagwood. They must have somehow SENSED this... Read more

Now, not so much but back in the day, before Mimi's, Marie Callender's and all the other countless restaurants that have popped up since, it wasn't too bad. There weren't too many choices and I was too young too know the difference. It was a spot for late night high school partiers. It was a good hangout and they were fairly tolerant, as long as we spent money. This was the late 60's and early 70's. Later when my wife and I were raising a family you couldn't beat Denny's. The food was good enough for us and there were plenty of other families with kids so it was okay for the kids to make a little noise. Plus, it was cheap eats. At the time, you couldn't beat the breakfast'. The menu has changed over the years and for the life of me I can't really remember too much about the dinner menu except that it was mostly typical American food, if there is such a thing as typical American food. The Grand Slam came out sometime in the mid 1970's and over the years several variations followed. ... Read more

It's the after hours drunk hangout, really? Do you need to be told to avoid it. Dont go without a police escort. Fairfield

Not somewhere I'd choose to go unless it's the middle of the night.  Food is basic, but tasty.  The waitresses are always super friendly and attentive, even when you've been out drinking.  The food is pretty inexpensive, even the giant platters of breakfast foods.  It beats Waffle House.

Below-average food and above-average prices.  I think everybody pretty much got Denny's in a nutshell.  You can go to a good chain restaurant for about the same price as a Denny's ticket.  It's a good option if nothing is open.  Also, it might depend for some on what kind of Denny's you go to (the drunk Denny's, the urban warzone Denny's or the down-home Denny's) but to me, it's blah.

They're good for breakfast (especially if you order from the senior menu) but I've never had a satisfactory lunch or dinner from a Denny's anywhere.

Strikingly mediocre.  Although it's a solid post-bar drunk bet while in college.

Denny's is the most over-priced, least appetizing franchise of all. The service also tends to be lacking. The place is a poor excuse for a truck stop, and breakfast - the one thing they market heavily - is even below average. The foods they serve are all of the lowest quality: bacon that is barely there after cooking, brown and serve sausage, tough steak etc.

From the decor to the service to what they are pleased to call food, these joints are uniformly repellant. I'd sooner wash a stale Snickers bar down with a warm Coke than eat here. And numbah`s right.  This is truly drunk food.  The only time I`ve enjoyed a meal here is when I`m on the verge of blacking out.

Great breakfast after an all-night binge. Always have a Denver or Western Omlette. Good service, fairly clean for a 24 hour place, and the food is consistent. They tend to salt the heck out the food so you might want to ask for an easy on the salt or no-salt option. The regular dinner stuff is like the McDonalds of sit-downs. Pretty ordinary.

I really like Denny's. They have a variety of food --- breakfast, lunch, and dinner --- all available 24/7. I work graveyard so this place is a lifesaver. The food taste great for the price [you are not going to get gourmet food for $10, sorry] and the waiters that have served me were always happy go lucky. I think their prices are fair. Lots of locations and clean for when I have gone. Eat here, great place if you are eating on somewhat of a budget but don't want fastfood. The appetizers are fantastic. I especially like the French toast, hot cocoa (free refills!), chicken fingers, and wings. Oh, and if you are a senior, they usually have discounts for you!

This was a pretty nice restaurant that I liked going to a lot. The closest Denny's to me closed a year ago, since there are other restaurants around there (Applebees, Finley's, Steak & Shake, Bob Evans).

One thing you can say about these guys is consistency across the border! Terrible food, terrible service, terrible management, terrible company, terrible prices, just terrible! I don't know how many times I have had very bad service in these stores, and the food is almost always cold, or hard as a rock.

I went to Denny's recently for breakfast, and was very impressed. Yes, impressed enough for me to raise my rating from 2 to 4. They must have changed something, because it had been so filled with cigarette smoke in the past, even with a non-smoking section in the building. It seemed to be well-ventilated this last time. Of course, I don't think there was anyone in the smoking section of the restaurant at the time. I guess it's all a matter of timing. I had the sausage and cheese breakfast bowl -- ohhh, it was so scrumptious! Overall, a pleasant place to go for a satisfying, filling meal. Just make the whole restaurant non-smoking, and it would be even better.

I am a waitress @ denny's in Pgh, PA and have been for about 3 years. Found this site by googling Dennys and have a couple comments. First of all to the person saying the food sucks and they dont even bother trying to cash in their free b-day meal--guess what we dont have the free b-day meal offer anymore, havent for at least 3 years so how can u say the food is that bad when u havent apparently been there in awhile. Dennys is dennys we offer food @ pretty good prices. Some things are great others are not but if u dont like it the first time then dont come back and complain that u didnt like it the last time either. Trust me i can go w/out the whole $2 tip i can expect if it means that u will not make me feel like i am worthless in front of the whole dining room. And guess what! I dont cook your food so dont yell at me like im stupid cuz your eggs arent done enough i didnt make them. I know waiting for your food can sometimes take a little longer then hoped for, but how long wo... Read more

    1. - Be hungry 2. - No wait 3. - End of the paycheck Above are conditions under which I've actually enjoyed Denny dining. They really try to keep the menu interesting and if you want the old, cheap "slams", look closely, they're still there and we be FULL when pockets ain't!

I thought maybe the service was bad in York, Pa.only. but I soon found out it to be everywhere I went. But I think the worse one was in Lavale, Md. I sat for 20 min. and never got a waitress so I got up and went to Bob Evans on down the road.

I can't cook to save my life (that's a fact) and I've been told that I have the palate of a descriminating 10 y/o (that's a bit harsh, I think) but that being said, Denny's food is fairly cheap, the food comes fast, and it tastes ten times better than anything I could make myself, so.. a solid 4.

I have eaten at Denny's in several states. The only one that even close to being good, was in NY state. The rest were really horrible. Bad, bland tasting food, poor service, prices that were too high for the quality of food. There are many better places to go.

If you are looking for high-class food fare, look elsewhere. If you want a more elegant dining atmosphere, look elsewhere. Take Denny's for what it is, cheap food, lapsidaisicle wait staff that often get stiffed by drunk after hours patrons that unjustifably don't leave tips thus making the wait staff bitter resulting in other patrons not leaving tips and..... just take it for what it's worth. A little better than McD's and the King.... not up to par with Shoney's(they are not that great, either...BTW)

I used to love this place. Whenever we came home late after dancing, working, whatever and were hungry we'd either go here or a local diner. Man, the food is delicious! Now in Texas we went 2 times. First time, the waiter was a jerk. Second time, the lady told my husband she would get him hash browns without onions and they had onions in them and she said well what do you expect when the stuff being fried all around has onions in it? Stupid. Not to mention the food wasn't the best I ever had either. Always thought I could count on Denny's for a good meal. Have been all over the US and ate at many Denny's but this one in Sherman, it is the pits!

Denny's is the remainder of a whole category of similar places - Sambo's, Shoney's (before they shrank due to bankruptcy) and so forth. All bad, all open all night and all not supposed to be more than they are. Still a notch above a Waffle House (just barely) and usually a gamble - some have fair to acceptable food while at others you may be risking your life by eating there. The one in Burlington Vermont can get so rowdy they actually employ a bouncer on weekends!

If I was 10, I'd give this a 1. Because of what my mom told me about it. But on my way to Alabama me, my brother and my dad stopped at one and wow. I loved it. And it was pretty nice inside. Good service, good food. And Ignatius-J-Reilly is right. They do have freindly staff and another reason this is a good restaraunt is that it was a diner type of restaraunt and it was in front of I-75 in Ohio. This may be gross to all you people that don't like Denny's, WELL YOU'RE WRONG!!!

It's ok. I usually only eat breakfast there and I love the hash browns but everything else is mediocre. As for the service, the closest Denny's to me is in Carpentersville, Illinois and they have the worst service! I was just there about a week and a half ago in the middle of the week at about 10 a.m. and there was a line practically going out the door by the time somebody finally came to start seating people. Then they sat us at a table and we asked for a booth and she said she didn't think any were any available when we were standing next to 2 empty booths! She never returned so we asked a waitress if one of them was available and she said yes. Then we had to wait around for our waitress who is the kind that only comes to take your order, bring your food and take your money. We didn't get refills on our drinks, she never came by to see if our food was good, nothing.

I can't believe how cheap Denny's is. They give you a buttload of food for practically NOTHING... I ordered a sandwich once but it was pretty gross... if you mess up a sandwich then the rest of your food can't be too good. They have awesome brownies though... Definitely be sure to split one with a friend!

When it comes to a nice hearty breakfast at a fair price, Denny's can't be beat. More than once, I've gone in there in the afternoon or evening and gotten a French Slam breakfast. I was a little disappointed that they no longer served some diner standards like open faced beef and turkey sandwiches. They seem to always be tweeking the lunch and dinner menu. Breakfast: 5 Stars. Lunch and Dinner: 3 stars. Resultant Rating: 4 Stars.

I'd like to rate this place higher than two stars. I like the 24 hour concept. Alas the one in Waukegan is not open until after I have to be at work. Good breakfast items, decent lunch and dessert selections negated by incompetent or rude waitstaff. Once upon a time there existed a 24 hour restaurant which had it all. Excellent food, service, and coffee. Alas, Sambo's was done in by the first salvo of political-correctness.
