Review Icon Shroomwoman reviewed Glee in Television:
I'm working my way through the first season of "Glee" on DVD, and I absolutely love it. The combination of music, dance, and drama is fun to watch, and the acting is excellent. I find the characters fresh, quirky and appealing. Jane Lynch, who plays the gym teacher/cheerleading coach, is one of the funniest actresses I've ever seen. Great, great show.

Big disappointment. I stayed at the Bellagio last week, and it wasn't what I expected. The first room I was assigned was quite dirty, and there was a loud water sound coming from the ceiling. In addition, I hadn't expected to be in the Spa Tower, which is a tower far removed from the main part of the hotel and casino. (None of this was detailed in my reservation.) I switched to a room in the main tower, although things did not improve much. I had to walk so far from the elevator to my room, I would have appreciated a Gatorade stand at the halfway point. The hotel is starting to look a bit shabby and dated, which is depressing. In the bathroom, I spent 10 minutes searching for a hand towel and washcloth and finally located them in what looked to be a hidden drawer in the vanity table. That night I was awakened at 2:00 a.m. by what sounded like a jet plane taking off above my bed. (This lasted 45 minutes.) Then at 8:40 the next morning, a maid opened the door and walked right into my room without knocking. I was flabbergasted! I stayed at a Hampton Inn earlier this year, and the experience I had there was a million times better than the one I had at the Bellagio. Next time I'll stay at the Wynn.

I'm getting a kick out of "Burn Notice." I just started watching season one on DVD, and I'm through six shows so far. Set in Miami, the show features an ex-CIA agent (Mike) who's trying to figure out who "burned" him. As Mike struggles to figure out what happened to his career, he helps family and friends solve various problems, often resulting in high-speed car chases, gunfire, etc. It's a cross between James Bond and "24."

As odd as it may sound, I was just reading about candy corn tonight. Who knew that October 30 is National Candy Corn Day? I was also surprised to hear that people eat 35 million pounds of candy corn around Halloween. As much as I like candy, I can't choke down much of this stuff.

I enjoyed "The Help." Set in the early '60s in Mississippi, the story is about a young woman (Skeeter) who returns home after college and finds herself at loose ends. As Skeeter struggles to establish her career as a writer, she uncovers an interesting story about the behind-the-scenes perspectives and lives of the black women who work as maids in her community. The characters are well developed, and the dialogue is believable and surprisingly not distracting. While the pace might be slow for some, I think most people will find this book a good read.

I really enjoyed this movie. It had the potential to be gimmicky, but surprisingly it wasn't. In addition, it was extremely long (around two hours and 45 minutes), but I didn't feel restless watching it. The acting was terrific, and the story kept me interested throughout. I wish they made more movies like this one.

I just finished listening to the audiobook, and it was terrible. I thought the idea behind this book sounded kind of cute, but the execution was severely lacking. Julie Powell is not a likable character by any stretch, and her descriptions of the dishes she prepared were often painful to endure. Powell spent a lot of time whining and cutting down other people, including her relatives, which made her seem petty and rude. Instead of focusing on the details of her own life, I wish Powell had included more information about Julia Child. I can only hope that the editing of the movie is better than that of the book.

I was in Beijing six years ago, and I can't wait make a return trip. The city is just spectacular. Standing on the Great Wall and taking in the gorgeous scenery for miles around is an experience of a lifetime, as is standing in the center of Tian'anamen Square. I also enjoyed touring the Forbidden City, seeing the Ming Tombs, and watching an acrobatics show put on by the China National Acrobatic Troupe. The city is fairly easy to navigate, and there's plenty to see and do. Weather definitely makes a big difference, so be sure to check it out before you plan a trip.
