Wow, after having a similar experience with overdraft charges and starting a new account at another bank, I googled "Key bank overdraft fees" and landed on this page.

I was hit with four overdraft charges last Friday, 9/18 for a total of $148.00 all for transaction that had not cleared and my direct deposit was occuring in the same batch of transactions. I pleaded my case professionally and even asked them to split the total, they offered nothing.

I explained my intention to close my account based on this experience, again they only stated their policies and said they valued my business and hoped to keep it going forward, after I clearly stated I would move on if some compromise was not reached.

This practice is not ethical and should not be allowed, yes I agree if you open the day negative, you should be assessed a fee, however if in night transaction processing, your account goes negative, you should not be charged if there is a pending deposit in the transactions. Furthermore, a financial institution should not be able to charge you for each line item transaction occuring on a single day, but a flat amount, should you be negative with your OPENING balance for the day.

I have been hit three times this year, once for only one, once for two, and not this one for four! I hope someone is compiling information to class action them and bring some justice.

They even admitted their fees are high, here is the final email I have from them:

"Thank you for your reply. I am sorry to hear that you will be leaving
key due to the recent overdraft fees assessed to your account. It is Key's
goal to provide you with the very best in customer service and I
apologize if we have not met that standard.

I sincerely apologize for any negative experiences you may have
encountered in the course of your banking relationship with us. The
information in your e-mail has been reviewed and forwarded to the
necessary departments.

Key works hard to develop pricing that is fair, equitable and
competitive. While our fees may not be the lowest, I believe we provide
the greatest value because of the level of service and technology
available to Key clients.

I value the banking relationship that we have enjoyed with you since
your account opened and hope that it will continue in the future.

For additional assistance, please contact us by signing on to Online
Banking and clicking on "Contact Us," or call us at 1-800-539-2968. We
are available weekdays from 7 a.m. until 9 p.m. and weekends from 8 a.m.
until 6 p.m., local time.

Sincerely,

Letty

Key has screwed me out of money for the last time. They have the WORST overdraft policy of any bank by far. Yesterday (17th) a pending charge--an automatic withdrawal from netflix--was posted to my account. This particular charge usually pends for 3 or 4 days before moving to cleared activity. I was paid today (18th) and my paycheck cleared. I called Key to ask if I was going to be charged an overdraft fee because of my pending netflix even though I now had more than enough to cover the mesely $6 it would have overdrafted (I knew to call and ask because they have charged me an overdraft fee on a PENDING CHARGE 6 TIMES ALREADY). The woman I talked to said that yes, even though my paycheck cleared and the netflix charge has yet to do so, I will STILL be charged an overdraft fee because it was pending first. If it hasn't actually gone through to CLEARED activity and won't CLEAR until I already have enough money to cover it then HOW IS IT COSTING YOUR BANK ANY MONEY AT ALL?! IT'S NOT!!! The government shouldn't have bailed out a single bank, all they do is rape and pillage their customers. I've gotten a $37 overdraft fee by overdrafting my account by $0.60 (sixty cents, yes). The worst, most immoral policies ever. They make it impossible for a struggling 20 year old full time student to ever get out of the hole. No matter how many hours I've wasted on the phone with them, they have never once refunded an entire fee in the 5 years I've been a customer.

Key bank has stolen from me for the last time. Earlier this year, I was charged a $34 overdraft fee, only to notice that after paying the fee, my balance was only -$20 or so, meaning I never incurred that charge. I called and reported the error, and after a little confusion on their end, my money was refunded. I was not so lucky this time.

Yesterday, (8/24) I checked my account balance: $4. No big deal, paycheck will be here Friday, and I have cash on hand. Today, 8/25, I look at my account balance and I'm in the negative not just one, but four separate overdraft fees! As I looked at my account summary, I saw that the first fee was not charged yesterday, or even the day before, but the 21st of this month! The best part is that at the time of the first fee, my account was shown to be in the positive. Because of the first fee, all of my balances after that were changed to reflect my missing $30, so now it appears that I have incurred 5 additional charges with no warning or notification from key.
I called 1800key2you, hoping to have this quickly resolved like last time, but i was not so lucky this time. The representative on the phone was rude and dismissive, telling me that the charges had been applied to my account, and that it was my fault I had not 'seen' the nonexistent charges until I had made five more overdrafts. I calmly told him that I was willing to compromise and pay one overdraft fee (I had made a mistake earlier in the week that put me about a dollar under by my records, but I remedied that before the charges even went through, making me think that key purposefully put charges before my deposit to cause this issue), but that I would not pay all of them because the bank had failed to inform me of the issue in any form of timely manner. He was again dismissive, telling me that it was my fault and that all he could offer me was a 'courtesy' deposit of $55 to 'help' with the charges. That's not good enough. I'm 18 years old and struggling to make enough to pay off my car and save for school, and I'm not willing to compromise so key could steal just a few dollars less from me. I told the rep. that, and also that if this was not resolved, I would be closing my account. He told me that closing the account was my 'perogative' as a customer, and cheerily informed me before I hung up that I had two more overdraft fees that had not yet been applied to my account.
I will be closing my account when this is over. I am going to try going to an actual branch tomorrow and speak with someone in person. If I don't get my money back, I will lose my job as I won't be able to drive there. Hopefully the local employees will be a little more understanding.

terrible! By far the worst bank I have ever banked with. They cheat you out of your money through overdraft fees, and tactics such as "courtesy" lists where they say to benefit you and allow you to "go on living your life" they let you over draw your account and take out money you do not have. Which in turn just makes you owe them more money then you usually are trying to take out in the first place. Not to mention their poor online banking which is slow, and often does not show everything that is processing. Their unproffesional tellers also are a headache. I was reassured three times yesterday that I had enough money and would not overdraft even after my processing activity, but I did. I am so sick of this bank I now owe them another $70, on top of the $300 I have lost within the last few months to them. If anyone is taking action against this bank I would like to be part of it. My email is E.Schneider@utah.edu.
thank you, and goodluck if you are still banking at key.

I need all people whom have been hit with excessive overdraft fees from KEYBANK and/or the alleged act of KEYBANK ordering bank transactions from the highest to lowest dollar amount instead of posting the transaction according to the order received forcing customer accounts into a negative balance quicker and artificially increasing the number of overdraft fees the company can charge. I am closing my accounts with Key on Monday. Banking with has been a constant nightmare: improper service, improper fees, broken promises/deadlines, unclear/incorrect bank statements (leading to fees), unusable cards/account access, incompetence, borderline fraudulent fees and oh yeah did I mention the ridiculous amount of fees?

1) Ordering checks cost me $115. I opened an account and was IMPROPERLY OVERCHARGED for ordering checks which overdrafted my account and subsequently brought on another overdraft charge. Literally they charged me $25 more than they said they would for my checks + the $80 in overdraft fees. Eventually Key fixed this and refunded me, only after 3 days of not being able to access any money or use my debit card... this all in the first week of banking with them. Way to go.

2) My family received new debit cards in the mail, ALL OF WHICH DID NOT WORK for 2 AND A HALF WEEKS!! This was a COLOSSAL FAILURE on Key's part. My stepfather was traveling when he found out he could not use his card or access his money. My mothers card was drawing money out of my account (WTF?) which quickly racked up well over $200 worth of overdraft fees (not all of which were refunded). My card did not work at all. I called Key every day, the 1800 number, the local branch, and they basically bullsh*tted me for 2 weeks because no one really knew what was going on. I got the MANAGER OF THE LOCAL BRANCH to APOLOGIZE and ADMIT THEY DID NOT KNOW WHAT WAS WRONG FOR 2 WEEKS! Long story short, my entire family could not access any money in their accounts for 1 week, and could not use the cards for another week and a half. Oh, all of this was right before Christmas too. Not all the overdraft fees that were, of course, tacked on during this process were refunded. Only at Key would they do this. Unbelievable.

3) Customer service does not adhere to PROMISED DEADLINES or call you back at the time or day they say they will. In fact, they will not call you at all and you will have to call them to explain the situation to a different person every time.

4) FAULTY/FRAUDULENT/EXCESSIVE OVERDRAFT CHARGES. I understand a Bank's need to charge overdraft fees -- fine. But when they are the result of incompetence, wrongful charge, "computer problems" (actually told to me at my local branch), or other "mistakes" they are inexcusable. Since opening my account at Key one year ago I have been hit with well over $600 of overdraft fees (!), about 75% of these were ADMITTED BY THE BANK to have been THEIR FAULT (see above). Whenever this happens my account and card are locked and it is a 2-3 day process of getting thinks working again, every time.

Example: Lets do some math (from a real recent bank statement): If my account is hit with a $39.00 overdraft fee, and my subsequent available balance is -$32.00 what does that mean? I had +$7.00 in my account and was charged with an overdraft. REALLY? Key admitted that there was a mistake processing ATM fees and agreed to refund the charge. This is the kind of BS that I put up with ALL THE TIME.

I had an account with Wachovia and only managed to rack up about $50 worth of fees during my 4 years of banking with them.

OVERDRAFT REFUNDS TAKE SEVERAL DAYS TO POST. While Key has no problems immediately hitting you with overdraft fees, any promised "refunds" will take several days to show up and post in your account. I guess this ends up working out because your card is usually locked during this time anyway.

5) PENDING CHARGES WILL ILLICIT IMMEDIATE OVERDRAFT FEES WHILE PENDING CHECKS YOU DEPOSIT WILL NOT BE ACCESSIBLE FOR 1-2 DAYS. This is amazing to me -- according to Key, "pending" money people charge you is real, whereas "pending" money you deposit is not. This is a clear double standard. I understand how "pending" activity works and banking in general works, but Key needs to have one standard as to how they treat "pending" activity. This is a very dirty trick and in my opinion this is fraudulent banking. Of course, none of this is apparent even when it shows up on your online bank statement the next day.

6) EMPLOYEE INCOMPETENCE. As you can imagine i've spent a lot of time at my local Key branch. What amazes me is every time I talk to a different person, I get a different answer.

Example: My debit card is locked and 1/3 of the people don't know hot to fix it, another 1/3rd fix it incorrectly and the other 1/3 fix it differently every time with a variety of outcomes and or delays.

Example: The teller charging me the wrong amount of money for ordering checks.

Example: 3 new debit cards, all of which did not funtion and took 2 and a half weeks to fix.

Example: Customer service not calling me back (ever) when they said they would.

Example: Customer service, Branch managers and Key officials not knowing how to fix a serious banking issue, culminating in an admission that they did not know what the problem was.

Example: Improper data entry, accounting, computing and incompetence resulting in literally hundreds of dollars (hundreds of dollars!!) in "mistaken" fees. This happens on a regular basis.

Example: forgetting to refund all mistaken fees as promised in addition to not completing this task in any timely fashion.

Bottom Line: Key Bank has a bad reputation in my area, I would not recommend them to anyone. Key has lost me and my entire family as customers. My stepfather was so furious about not being able to access his money while he was traveling he closed his accounts months ago. I should have done the same. Literally its one thing after another. Since banking with them for only one year, my debit card has not functioned (for one reason or another) for an estimated 30 days total. I have been charged with well over $600 of fees, most of which are not my fault and not all have been refunded as promised. I could go on, but the basis for my complaints are outlined in this review.

Do not bank with Key.

Key Bank are the absolute worst bank I have ever had any dealings with them. They robed me out of so much money in stupid fess when I really did nothing wrong. I even have printouts of transactions where you can see I did nothing wrong but still got charged fees. Anyone thinking of creating an account with them should really look elsewhere. I would almost bet that the people that have posted positive reviews of Key Bank are paid rep management folks trying to make Fee Bank look a little better.

I am a mother of a son that had/has a checking account with Key Bank, but, for some reason, my comment is no longer available to view, I wonder why?! His account was to have a limit of $200, could not go over, we were assured of this, in the office of the manager that set up the account for my son. My son had gone over by $3.00 and by the end of two weeks, he had incurred close to $300 in fees. They were adjusted, because the Bank knew they had made an error in accounting. But, it did take several phone calls. Although, I was to be assigned as an authorize user, each time I called, no one would speak to me because I wasn't on the account. Now, approximatly two years later, the account has been dormant, they sent a letter indicating my son would be assessed a $5 fee each month due to inactivity. We called, both my son and myself, had a very lengthy conversation in regards to the remaining balance with the representative. Requested the account be closed. Well, that was in February. My son works in New York, four weeks on, four weeks off. He has since recieved two more letters advising the account will be assessed a $5 fee due to inactivity. The balance was about $13.00. The bank has now taken $10 of this amount and is adement no one called to close account. My son has called the bank by cell, using his time and minutes to be put on hold and educated that the account is NOT closed. He asked to speak with a manager, was told a not once, not twice, but three seperate times there wasn't a manager available and to call back. I also have called, and, you guessed it, because I am not on the account, they refuse to discuss the account with me. As it stands now, the account is still open, the are taking fees out and, oh yes, let's not forget the letter that went to the coporate headquarters. Nothing. ABsolutly nothing. All over $13.00. We are in the process of speaking with an attorney and following up a formal complaint to the banking commision. I hope it was worth the $13.00 to them.

When I signed up for my account, I was allowed to withdraw funds from my checking account as soon as I deposited a check into the ATM. Then, a funds availability policy change letter was sent with my paper statement, which I normally discard. It stated that funds that could be withdrawn after depositing a check into the ATM were limited to $100. I made an ATM withdrawal without this knowledge, because I normally do not open my paper statements. I withdrew over $100. I was charged an overdraft fee, even though the check was good and was for over $100. Then, each week thereafter, I was charged a recurring overdraft fee for approximately 3-4 weeks. The total fee was approximately $125. I didn't learn of the overdraft, because the branch had incorrectly entered my phone number into their computer system. Even after complaining twice, the number was still incorrectly entered. I finally received a notice of the overdraft in the mail. I went to the branch at 3030 Secor Rd,Toledo, OH 43606 and explained my predicament. When it became clear that no help would be forthcoming, I lost my temper and started shouting. I was told to leave by Donald B Smith, which I did, and I apologized to Donald B Smith as I left. I later found out that my account was closed, thereby preventing anyone from the corporate office being able to access my account and credit any funds whatsoever back to me. Any time I have attempted to go back into the bank and calmly explain my point of view, Donald B Smith tells someone to call the police, even though it is clear I am not a threat, if he is present. Todd Surgo, the branch manager, is pleasant and hasn't treated me like Donald, but has done nothing to rectify the situation and doesn't intervene when Donald treats me like a criminal even though I am a victim of their scam.

I went to topclassactions.com to file my complaint, as well as ftc.gov to file another complaint. Just use copy and paste. Keybank has been sued before. Topclassactions just settled a lawsuit agaisnt Bank of America for unfair overdraft fees. BofA actually has a better track record than KeyBank, which has treaded the line of legitimacy for over a decade. KeyBank was actually sued recently for fraudulent student loans.

Take the time to submit your overdraft claims to both places and hopefully action will be taken.

IF YOU'RE CONSIDERING OPENING AN ACCOUNT WITH THIS BANK PLEASE READ THIS FIRST! Words cannot describe how much I wish I could rate them negative 5 stars. DO NOT OPEN AN ACCOUNT WITH THIS BANK UNLESS YOU WISH TO HAVE YOUR MONEY STOLEN FROM YOU!
Here's my story.
I opened an account with them last summer. They hit me with about 3 overdraft fees prior to my recent experience (which i will get to), and I didn't care enough to make a big deal out of it before. However, recently, I've never felt so betrayed, lied to, and abused by a company in my life.
Here's what happened.
I get paid via direct deposit to my checking, every other Thursday at midnight. 2 days before my payday, I stopped at Hannaford to pick up some needed items for my sick boyfriend, which cost me $30. At the time I should have had $380 in my account (I checked the ATM). Now, I used my debit card as CREDIT (using it as credit makes it take LONGER to post to your account, usually 3 days) knowing that by the time the transaction went through, the money would be there to cover it.
Here's what keybank did.
They held a $360 check I wrote for my rent. (I should have realized they had something up their sleeves, because me and my boyfriend turned in our rent checks at the same time, yet his cleared from his bank account 2 days prior.) They put the rent check through the same day that I went to Hannaford. You know what they did?
THEY CHARGED ME AN OVERDRAFT FEE FOR THE PENDING CHARGE. PENDING!
That Thursday I got the letter in the mail explaining the $40 overdraft fee they charged me. And you know what the item was that apparently over-drafted my account? the $30 PENDING charge from Hannaford. It was even marked as pending in the letter. Now mind you, doesn't pending mean it's technically still there? The money's still in your account, they're just waiting for it to clear. Which should take a while, because I used it as credit (any time I've used my debit card as credit before it's taken 3-5 days to officially be taken out of my account.)
But nope, they charged me an overdraft fee for a pending charge.
Then you know what they did? They claimed the transaction cleared that wednesday before I got paid. Now, I KNOW better because I check my account balance every day via the ATM. It said I still had $20 in my account. Plus, a credit transaction with my debit card has NEVER cleared in less than 3 days before (and i've even used my debit card as credit at hannaford before).
THEY CHARGED ME A SECOND OVERDRAFT FEE ONCE THAT PENDING TRANSACTION CLEARED.
THEY HIT ME WITH 2 OVERDRAFT FEES FOR THE SAME TRANSACTION!!!!
How can a bank justifiy that at all? How? They charged me an overdraft for that pending transaction, then another one when that same transaction "cleared." They stole $80 from my account.
I called them about it. The woman I spoke to was so incredibly rude (I was even trying to be nice about it, but towards the end I lost my temper because of how she was treating me). She answered my questions with almost the same exact sentence every time. She was claiming that they put the money on hold from your account with a pending transaction, so it's not really in your account. I confronted her about that, saying that if the transaction hasn't cleared yet, you still have my money, so it's still there, how is my account overdrafted, and she completely avoided answering that. I also brought up what's the point of using a debit card as credit then, if with a credit transaction they still take the money out of the account right away to put it on "hold."  She avoided answering that question. She actually ended up HANGING UP ON ME towards the end of the conversation.
Not only do they steal your hard earned money, but their representitives are mindless drones, who rude and avoidant.
I highly recommend using a different bank. They can't be trusted to hold your money, which is what a Bank is supposed to do.
I will be closing my account when I get out of work at 1pm Monday.

**IF ANYONE HAS ANY INFORMATION ON THE CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT AND HOW I CAN GET INVOLVED, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!**

I have also been victimized by Key Bank with holding deposited money, yet paying the debits and checks, . I was told I had $250, but when I debited a $4 cup of coffe, and $60 in a debit for Christmas purchase, I was charged for overdrafts because they process the debits, BEFORE They Credit the deposit!  I want in on the lawsuit, does anyone have information on it.

I'VE HAD IT WITH THIS BANK!! During times like these when everyone is watching their money much more closely, Key Bank's little tricks are become more and more obvious. My experiences have been similar to previous posting. No matter when I make deposits or how often I check my account, Key still manages to work their "magic" so that they get their overdraft charges. I'm keeping my money under my mattress!!!

Replacing a lost ATM card fee is 5$ always. Event when you have 25k in their bank...They purposely hold paychecks and large deposits hoping they will criss cross and nab you with overdraft fees. I've had them held 5 to 10 extra days for not apparent reason. Customer service now admits their postings are off by as much as 4-5 days yet does not reveal the reason for it. I learned a long time ago to keep a good 1k extra in my account for padding when they do this. But my mast staement was soo deliberate, holding all my christamas shopping a good week and my mortgage and slamming it all on my account on a Friday, but of course pending my paycheck. Fortunately I had the funds to cover it and knew something was up because my balance continued to appear 1100 too high (they held up the mortgage posting - though the mortgage co credited me already for it 5 days ago...) UNBELIEVEABLE! I am going to pull my 25k out of there. I am scared they are doing this because the bank is going under. KEYBANK IS GOING UNDER! could be in the headlines!

-* I rated Keybank with a minus one star based on my experience with Keybank on my home loan. My Minimum Mortgage payment was $ 559.68 and for several years I was paying $ 650.00 per month asking Keybank to applied the difference towards Principle. What Keybank did every other month was to applied the full $650.00 towards interest only and then the following month applied the full $ 650.00 towards principle. I called and asked what was going on and I could never get a satisfactory answer. The only way I could get Keybank to properly apply the payment was to send two payments; one for the minimum payment and the second check for additional principle with a statement on the check "Principle Only". When I first started this process late 2006; January 2007, Keybank reverse my princple payment for December 2006 in the amount of $ 650.00 to interest only. On my 1098 for 2007, Keybank did not include the $ 650.00 in the amount of interest I paid to Keybank. I added the $ 650.00 to my tax return and wrote a statement and included the mortgage statement showing the reverse principle to interest.

I paid off Keybank early (about ten years early) and I estimated that Keybank over charged me $ 3,791.35 for interest. I compared the amount of interest I paid to Keybank and the amount that Keybank claimed on the Tax Form 1098 and they did not $ 1,706.84 of interest that Keybank charged me.

If anyone knows a good lawyer that can help me in this matter, please email me at James1178@gmail.com

Awful, just awful. I put my Key Bank private student loan into forbearance using the procedures and paperwork they requested of me. After a few weeks, I had no documentation from them, so I called. They said they had lost everything and needed to update my address. I did. I called back a few days later, they said the loan was in forbearance and they would send me something. After a month, I called back, and the person on the phone said they hadn't updated my address. So I updated it again, and again was told that the bank would send me something to confirm the forbearance. A month later, having received nothing, I did the whole thing again. This went on for six months. Finally, I demanded a supervisor.

The supervisor told me the loan had not been put into forbearance, and my address had not been updated, and they could do nothing for me because I "should have contacted the bank sooner" with my new address. When I told them I had phone records of the calls I'd made to the bank, the representative referred me to a supervisor who failed to return three messages.

I have been in customer service hell ever since. Every single person I reach says, "We don't handle that in this department," then they refer me to a number where no one picks up, and no one ever returns messages.

They've added fees and who knows what kind of penalties to the loan, too. It's unbelievable.

I am closing a Key Bank Checking account tomorrow after years of overcharges that they make up to take my money. On friday 8-8-08 I had $24 in my account, I went to the bank and deposited $370 cash into the account to pay my bills. That same day I paid a $236 phone bill, $106 geico bill and $24 gamefly and think I have $28 left in the account. Tuesday rolls around and I get a overdraft letter in the mail,I call the bank and they tell me that because I made the CASH deposit after 3:00pm that its looked at as a deposit for Monday and that I paid all my bills on Friday so there is nothing they can do. I paid the $51 and closed the account. Many times over the last few years I have wanted to close this account for reasons just like this but I would always find a way to blame myself. I do not feel that this bank is reasonable about the overdraft charges at all and I am glad to be moving on. Key Bank finds a way to make your money their money.

CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT NEEDED!!!!

Like the rest of you, i play by the rules, work hard for my money, and can admit when i make a mistake however.......

After numerous overdraft fees from this bank i finally surfed the net "Key Bank Class Action Lawsuit" and found this site. I NEVER post things for any reason but this has got to stop with Keys unethical overdraft practices. This most recent overdraft almost made me cry. Here's what happened.......

Friday July 4th 2008. Account Balance positive $52. I Deposit personal check from rental tenant into Key Bank ATM for $450.

Over the holiday weekend spent roughly $200 with Key Bank Debit Card.

Total overdraft fees after weekend = -$268.

Sooo here's the problem. Key bank says that i was allowed $100 good faith credit for the deposit of the check during that weekend. Any transactions above $152 resulted in a overdraft fee since the check was not yet cleared. The purchases above $152(McDonald's for the family, a U.S. Flag blanket for the Fireworks picnic, Gas for the car and snacks for the picnic.) resulted in overdraft fees. When Monday rolled around and i got online and saw that i was in the negative i naturally called to get this all straightened out. To make a very run around story short, i left the Executive Key-bank representative speechless when i said simply,..... "I totally understand limiting my funds until the check has cleared because you don't know if there is a check until Monday and u verify that it is legitimate, so automatically giving overdraft fees is a natural defense by a bank to deter excessive Non Sufficient Funds transactions. HOWEVER once the check is cleared the bank should carry the responsibility of reimbursing the overdraft fees because they now know that the money spent was truly there."

Its simple, you are my bank, i allow you to hold my money so that i can avoid walking around with wads of cash and be able to make transactions via a debit card whenever i cant be there in person (Ex. Internet transactions). When i give you my money to hold i understand you will use my money and other peoples money to invest in loans and other legitimate financial tools. When i need to withdraw my money for my own personal transactions i expect my money to be there. The line is crossed when you find ways to take advantage and manipulate our willingness to allow you to hold our money. When a banking institution recklessly and excessively manipulates its customers and creates legal policies allowing loopholes like this to happen unchecked, we the people are then obligated to call for correction in the form of a Class Action Lawsuit.

FACT: Keybanks online banking for customers has a ILLUSION loophole. When a employee of Keybank accesses your information they see your transaction history in REAL TIME (When the merchant is paid). When you as a customer look online via there online banking you see a TRANSACTION HISTORY (When you made the transaction) that does not show what the Key Bank Employee sees. YOU see when the actual transaction took place, KEY BANK sees when they actually paid the merchant, sometimes 2 weeks later. The reality is that the lower level employees don't see that bogus sheet your reading on the Internet so they think you are crazy, meanwhile you cannot see the real time transactions so you think they are crazy. They purposely keep you and there own employees in the dark, looking at separate forms. As all of us know who are on this website the employees are limited in there ability in offering you a refund but are allowed to give you so many in a 12 month period. So you Feel like you compromise when they allow you %50-%75 of your wrongfully stolen money bank once or twice. The truth is that both you and the employees should be allowed to see BOTH the Real Time transactions and the Transaction History. This would make more employees understand the customers point of view and allow the customer to monitor the banks actions and demand an explanation as to why it took them 2 weeks to pay the transaction. The Grounds for a class action lawsuit is the fact that AVAILABLE BALANCE is a DELIBERATE MISREPRESENTATION OF FUNDS.

Fact: Key Banks computer system is designed to hold certain transactions, then to compound them all at once resulting in overdraft fees. Take a look at your online banking statement next time you go into the negative. Notice that transactions you though cleared weeks ago suddenly end up in the overdraft section, and that all of the big monies spent for each overdraft day come before the smaller transactions. If they did it in reverse there would be less overdraft fees. Grounds for Class Action Lawsuit, DELIBERATE CALCULATED THEFT of SMALL ACCOUNT CUSTOMERS.

Ive had more than enough of Key Banks unethical tricks, i work for a living and don't believe in suing for a quick buck. This however is not personal, its business.

I hope more of us stand up and speak out against these type of crimes, i a

after a direct deposit error made on my account, it was overdrawn by close to $250. When i called numerous times to keybank, as well as the branch that i opened my account with not even a supervisor was williing to help me with my problem.

Key Bank's mess up cost me over $200, if you are looking for a bank that is willing to meet you at a middle road and come to a solution to please both you and the bank I would strongly reccomend staying as far from this bank as you possibly can.

Worst bank ever!!! My account had a fradulant charge of 40dollars. I went to the bank, discussed this with the Manager and he recommended that I cancel my check card before anymore charges could go through. He assured me that they wouldn't let the 40dollar charge go through, but guess what they did and then tried to charge me an overdraft fee of 38. Not only that he recommended that I pull all the funds from my account til everything was settled so I did well guess what they charged me a five dollar charge for cancelling my debit card and then charged me another 38 for insufficiant funds, after telling me to pull all the money from the account. Talk about really bad business practices and from all people THE BANK MANAGER!!!! This all happened at the Key Bank in Burlington, Vermont. BEWARE

Key Bank is the worst, avoid this bank at all costs.

Here's the history: I had my accounts at Key Bank for 12 years. My business account ran almost $4 million through it during that time with varying balances.

A HOLD for $967 showed up from Macy's. I have never set foot in that store, it was obvious fraud. I contacted the fraud dept at Key Bank and was told they would investigate, it would take a minimum of 14 business days for the money to be returned, (stress minimum). They told me to speed it up to contact Macy's directly.

After literally 45 phone calls to Macy's, I finally spoke to somebody who didn't shoot me to a FULL voice mail box. I gave them the information and they said they'd look into it. 2 days later the hold was lifted. A week after that I received a letter from Key Bank stating the investigation was closed, the hold was lifted, all was well.

3 weeks later they took the money out of my account, all $967!!!!! I contacted the fraud dept at Key Bank again and was told the same story. I informed them that it was FRAUD and to put the money back into my account. They told me this story of I can apply for a line of credit blah blah blah. I interrupted the bimbo on the phone and told her to give Macy's the line of credit and give me back MY MONEY!!!!!!

3 days later and nothing from them. They failed to investigate the fraud a month ago, they have the responsibility to investigate ALL FRAUD charges, they didn't. They failed to do their due diligence, they are liable. And Macy's is horrible by the way, I'll never set foot in that criminal organization either.

Avoid Key Bank at all costs, and I pray everyday they go out of business.

What an awful company.  These people are just not honest.  They breach written contractual agreements EFFORTLESSLY.  They make up rules as they go.  Absolutely the worst real estate lending experience of my life.  We pulled the plug, fired these jerks, and took a prime 5.5 Million loan package elsewhere.

Remember, if they would lie or be dishonest in one area, how can you trust them?

Worst bank I have ever done business with. I am opening a new account at a different bank and will soon be closing this one out. Hubby deposited a check in the ATM and the bank put a hold on the check minus $100.00 and charged us $225.00 in over-draft fees.

Almost $900 in overdraft fees over the weekend. And we have 10K in a Key savings account. Excessive? All transactions were approved via debit card, nothing more than $30. Watch for this one on the news, because we will be fighting back!

Keybank has been extremely poor regarding their overdraft fees. When this was pointed out to them, they said their fees are similar to Wells Fargo. What ... they think Wells Fargo is a shining example? Anyway, went in and paid cash to clear overdraft fees and make sure account was completely brought up to date. That night, they applied the overdraft fees for the items that had been below balance that day! So now we're negative again, without spending another penny! Spoke to branch manager. We fixed this. Happened again the next day, because the account was "negative" for the day (and another charge came in) that then spawned another overdraft fee! You can't keep up with their overdraft fees! Then I was charged a fee for not bringing my account balance up ... when I had personally gone in to make sure we paid the right amount of cash. Yep. Charged a fee on my overdraft fee negative balance! I've had enough!!!!

I feel everyone's pain. I admit I was responsible for the first overdraft, but Key bank gives no breaks when it come to their fees. I made a total amount of maybe $50 charges to my account in one day, not knowing someone I wrote a check to months ago had finally decided to cash it. I am paying $147 in overdraft fees on $50. One of their 'Tier 2' $38 overdraft fees was for a .99 cent itunes charge that cleared the same day I mad over $900 in deposits. The bank claims that previously authorized charges go through before deposits even if the two were made on the same day. That really means... we like to rip you off for as much as we can. I asked for a refund of this last $38 charge, not the other three charge because it was a $38 charge for .99 cent when I made deposits. I really don't want to go through the hassel of changing banks, but they really don't seem to be into cutsomer service. They claim I'm over my limit for fee waivers, but I don't remember getting any. Shame on KeyBank. I know I'm responsible for making sure my account is in the black, but why does my bank think it's okay to do this and over .99cent. Now they're going to lose my business.

At what point does Key Bank's raiding of my checking account become robbery? "Hello, officer, I'd like to report a bank robbery in progress. No, nobody is holding up a bank, the bank is stealing from my account." My account is nearly empty because of their regularly dipping their hands into my personal financial cookie jar. Guess what, folks? There ain't gonna be no more cookies put into that cookie jar!! We have three recourses, folks: one is a complaint to the FDIC; the other is an email to our senators and congresspeople asking for legislation to enact some sort of regulation on bank fees. What's happening should be illegal, it certainly is unethical. Third recourse: Anybody know a good attorney who would like to take on a class-action lawsuit? Count me in!! Key Bank has much deeper pockets than I do!

I am currently banking with Key & am in the process of closing my account. I have had NOTHING BUT TROUBLE with them! If only I read these reviews before opening the account! I, like several of you, have had unexplainabl overdraft charges on my account. Now they are trying to tell me there is nothing they can do because they have already courtesy'd my account within the past 12 months. I currently have 11 overdraft charges (at $38 a piece) and I have only 1 item that overdrew. Also, I noticed that daily they change the order in which things go through so that they can say I had no $$ in the account when in actuality I did! Has anyone had this problem? I am at whits end right now & don't know what to do. I am -171.00 because of overdraft charges & I don't feel as though I should pay them. I can't close the account until that is paid... they say. But, if I wait, I get charged ANOTHER fee for every 5 days its negative. What do I do? I really would love/appreciate someones help. I have contacted them, I took my statement book in, printed the online account each day to show it canges and they are saying there is nothing they did wrong. Does anyone have any suggestions that would help me out of this?!?! I have already gone through the process of opening a new account with another bank but I am afraid they are going to deny me because of what Key has done... Don't know what to do... Thanks for any help!!

Keybank has lost my business. I've been with them for sixteen years but this is ridiculous. I had charges go through the SAME day as a major deposit but because the "time" of the automated deposit supposedly went through after the charges they charged me $180 in overdraft fees that they won't refund. Even the overdraft notices show a postive balance the same time they are claiming overdrafts. It's a scam.

I'm giving one star because of the lack of a usable system.

As a person who sees online banking as a way of the future, the way KeyBank's system handles transactions is quite poor.  This can also be attributed to the actual network, where transactions are not posted immediately upon purchase and that there are "clashing" philosophies at work.  (An example would be, if the customer is making a purchase and there isn't enough in the bank, does the transaction go through?  KeyBank seems to think, "yes", because the item is needed.  They then proceed to charge you a large service fee for overdrawing on the account if you don't have overdraft protection..  The customer may think, "no".  If you don't have it, why spend it?)

One of the known glitches is the fact that some transactions actually disappear from the system entirely, and reappear perhaps the next day or two.  For those using the online banking system (I haven't tested this with the ATM), this disappearing transaction could later bite you in the buttocks if you're performing a lot of electronic transactions.  If you don't keep track of your spending and your balance, you may be hit with a service charge especially if you're dealing with limited liquid funds.  While you may even be diligent in keeping track of every penny spent, sometimes that is not enough, especially if you're relying on the online banking system to track your balance.  In this case then, why even bother having an online banking system?

And I'm giving it four stars because of the great customer service.  This then averages out to 2.5 stars or to even it out, 2 stars.  The customer service is great because KeyBank knows about their lack-lustre system and actually compensates for it.  As long as you remain professional and diligent in making a stand to some known issues, you'll get what you want.

They took my debit card away because I made a few accounting errors. They also restricted their branch hours, made misrepresentations of available funds on their website, and their website is having maintenance every time I need to know what funds are coming through my account.

If they make an accounting error, which they do often (I've been in branches as they talk about how a certain accounting error was made on someone else's account) they try to blame you, but it's not ok to accidentally bounce a check, because they'll take away your account priviledges then, and you won't be able to deposit checks outside of banking hours, which they have restricted.

They also changed the funds availability policy to be more strict, so that they can charge more bounced check fees. The fees are all rather exorbitant in terms of how much you pay. Even if you have funds in your account, they won't hesitate to charge you the $38. Then, they'll try to sell you some useless overdraft protection that just serves to increase how much you pay to them overall (in interest).

They don't have very good customer service on the phone, and they are always trying to sell you something you don't need, even if you've said that you don't want to have telephone contact with their marketing department.

I find banking at Key Bank to be a great hassle.

Keybank is very disappointing and can be described as the worst bank experience I have ever had. I went in thinking I will open a checking account because of the free ipod promotion. They said it is simple and I had to do is fulfill three things.. get a student credit card from them, debit card, and online bill-pay. Everything went smooth until the credit card was declined. Of course, I would not have a high credit score if any at all because like many students, I am just starting up my credit history, and thus goes with the name student card. They said as a student, you should have at least six months of previous credit history in order to get this card and the free ipod. There was the catch, as always, a hidden detail never mentioned. As a result, Keybank would not fulfill their free ipod part of the bargain for opening up an account. Hours spent trying to figure this out with branch managers and phone calls to numerous 1800s and 1888s gave me nothing but sorry, I dont know what to do and heres another number. can i transfer you. Their promotional deal was definately a marketing campaign to lure people into their, albeit, sucky bank. But lucky for them, I will never be banking with them again and will give no recommendations to others. Keybank, learn how to do banking and gain customers, not push them away for life

What a mistake by changing from my existing hometown bank to Key. 24 hour hold on all deposits (even a key check). Internet does have a pending area to watch acount, but doesn't work! When transaction hits it hits. No pending warning. Close at 4:00 pm / so much for a bank for the small business. Several bad checks due to hold on deposit and not aware due to lack of internet failure. My personal bank rep told me I should not rely on internet banking and go back to the old balancing methods. National rep spoke with agreed that she didn't like it as well as her old bank before she got a job at key. $38.00 a pop / Sorry Mr. Shultz!

Here's a letter I recently wrote to the president of KeyBank in regard to overdraft charges that STILL have not been explained to me (today is April 29). What a crappy bank. 0 stars if I could  (account has been closed, so don't worry about the acct #)- April 4, 2007 Henry L. Meyer III, Chairman KEYBANK 127 Public Square Cleveland, Ohio 44114 Re: Account Number 440580058905 Dear Mr. Meyer: I would like to direct your attention to the above referenced account, which happens to be my checking account. (I only use a debit card.) I confirm my balance online almost every morning. According to Mondays (April 2) balance, and my own accounting, I had sufficient for my needs. This morning, however, I am faced with an entirely unforeseen situation. My account has deteriorated and for reasons I am unable to ascertain. If I made a mistake which is unlikely it was a small one. More likely, the account was manipulated by the bank, via the online information it provided me, to increase fees and penalties. You will notice that, at this point, I am already being charged fees upon fees. $32 is apparently not enough. The bank has added another $4.45. Yesterday, a local KeyBank vice president informed me that my problems would get much worse in the days ahead: according to him, fees and penalties would exceed $200. Actually, they are now past $400. This because I trusted your online balance to be, if not definitive, at least accurate. This because employees of KeyBank are entirely unable to explain how the online system works. Twenty minutes ago I received yet another version from Randi Brown, Asst. Manager at Crossroads KeyCenter in Salt Lake City, who is sending my account to collections. It must be satisfying to sit high up in your glass tower and anticipate the more or less effortless earnings this kind of graft produces. Yours is an odious and immoral undertaking, damaging not only to your customers and your country, but to your very soul. I cannot pay your fees. Even if I could, I would not. I will not be party to a crime. Please close my account. Sincerely, Paul Mallamo C/o JANI-KING OF UTAH 111 East Broadway, Suite 300 Salt Lake City, Utah 84111

I am still waiting for a correct copy of the lien release. They have managed to give me 2 incorrect copies so far. And this is just the last of a long list of mistakes they have made during the course of the loan. THEY ARE INCOMPETENT, IMPOLITE, INACCURATE, AND INADEQUATE. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THEM, THEY ARE THE WORST!!!

I would not recommend Keybank, I was moving not long ago, and did not know the rental truck and movers would cost more than I had budgeted, I was overdrawn for a few days, and the fees they charge are TOTALLY excessive! For being overdrawn for just a couple days until I could cover it (heck, I covered it as soon as I knew about it), they charged me $200+ in overdrawn fees! I think it is time for people to write their national reps and have them investigate these excessive bank fees and start regulating them better! Nope, not a bank I would recommend, and I am in the processo of dropping them, moving to another bank.
I also had a dispute with a company over a charge to my Mastercard/debit card. The business basically took my $500 and did nothing for me, so I disputed it with Keybank, Mastercard--they REFUSED to refund my money and reverse the charge despite my getting nothing for my $500!
So, have dropped Keybank, changed banks, and am in the process of writing complaints to those in charge of Keybank, Mastercard (oh yes, dropped MC too for Visa).

I have been a loyal and responsible Keybank customer for around 15 years. My recent experiences mirror those of canankee below. As stated, overdraft fees are charged in such a way as to earn Keybank as much money as possible before the customer has a chance to recover. I had $270 in overdraft charges before the first notice ever reached me. All the while I had thousands in other Keybank accounts under my name. Some of the fees assesed violate their own policies. It would seem they pay for the candy canes out of their profits on the overdraft charges.

I could get really irate at key bank but I won't. I continually get overdraft fees in the hundreds of dollars. It is a testament to my stupidity. I will move my money to a credit union soon and see if the grass is greener there. Even when I had Peoples Bank I thought their overdraft fees were excessive. Key Corpse are worse. Someone already said it... if you have a nice cushion of 1000$ or so at all times in your account... fine. Use key, if you are like me and live paycheck to paycheck... Don't use them. Credit Unions will let you link savings accounts and checking accounts and charge you only 5$ each time you overdraft to make the transaction... way better than multiple 28$ cascading overdrafts that key gives. I only stayed because they had one nice manager. It's amazing how one decent person can help keep you company afloat.. well she is gone. ANd I am going with her...

KeyBank doesn't process debit/credit transactions over the weekend, so you end up with all of your withdrawls listed as "pending." When it finally does go through, they simply deduct the larger purchases first. This way, if you overdraw your account with the last purchase (the largest dollar amount), they can charge you overdraft fees on each smaller, previous transaction (i.e. $31.75 per $2-10 debit, adding up to over $400 in fees, when only one $120 transaction had actually overdrawn the account). IMHO, a horrible bank unless you have enough money to cushion your account so that overdrafts never occur.

Get a grip and stop whining about you not balancing your checkbook and blaming it on someone else.
