Too bad it cannot be rated a big fat "0" ! Suntrust is garbage when it comes to banks. They will bleed you dry on fees if you get an overdraft. They will hit you for $21 then within 7 days they will hit you for another $36. They are nothing more than blood suckers. They are also assholes when it comes to their employees, one day I pull in to cash a check, the teller I have known for 4 years says" Hi,**** how is everything going and we chat for a minute about how our children are doing. She sends a lollipop along for my son :) The day after that I pull in and my favorite teller says,"Welcome to Suntrust what can I do for you?" At the end of the transaction she says, "Will there be anything else I can do for you? I say, "no." She says with the look of a stepford wife,"Thank you for banking at Suntrust." Rather than our usual good byes, and take it easy, etc...They have this lady all of a sudden acting like a damn robot!! Some idiot suit at the top of that shitty bank must have said, "THIS IS WHAT ALL OF YOU HAVE TO SAY FROM NOW ON......WELCOME TO SUNTRUST BLAH BLAH BLAH Just wondering if anyone else noticed a change in their once friendly teller. Did their teller all of a sudden have a blank stare and rehearsed line? I will be changing banks very soon, and I am going to let everyone know what heartless scum Suntrust is!

Poor hours, and a filthy ATM machine, especially at night when the bug infestation (spiders, webs, mosquitos, gnats, moths, etc.) is at its worst.

I could never get the online business banking to work properly. Customer service had to keep emailing me a new password, but they don't tell you that you have a limited amout of time to log in with it before it's voided. Then you have to request a new one. Wachovia's online banking, while still primitive is way better, and much easier to use.

I opened a second account recently to deposit our company's taxes in. The same day I opened it the account was mysteriously closed. The bank could offer no explanation as to why.

We decided to leave the few small things (like web hosting) that were being automatically charged to the account, but agreed to soon close it. Since we weren't actively using the account, and not really paying attention to the total, it had overdrafted. Upon realizing this, I made a deposit. To verify the deposit posted successfully, I tried to check the account balance from the ATM later in the week. The ATM printed a receipt that contained the message, "Unauthorized Usage". What does that mean? My assumption was that my account had been closed due to insufficient funds. So of course, now I don't have to close it right? Wrong. They simply suspended my card so I couldn't deposit money, but kept the account open so that I could keep overdrafting.

When I confronted customer service about this at the bank they caused a scene. First one representitve, then another came along saying, "Excuse me. I've been overhearing your conversation. . . " I asked why didn't the slip of paper say "Card Temporarily Suspended" instead of "Unauthorized Usage"? Why didn't the teller inform me that my ATM card had been deactivated when I made my last deposit? Why didn't I get notice in the mail? I did receive an overdraft notice. It could have been printed right on there, "Card Suspended". How about a phone call or email? Their answer? "We're not required to. -And, "We don't have the budget to have someone call everyone whose account has been suspended". What about an automatic email? The customer service rep said to me, ". . . Okay, I feel like you're just grasping at straws now. What's your next question?"

Needless to say, the account is closed and I won't be transferring my business affairs to them afterall. I would advise you do the same. There are other banks who actually want your business - I hope.

I open an account online with SunTrust Bank.  I received a settlement and went to deposit the check.  I understand that they put a hold on the account because it was an out of state check.  However, after I opened the account they closed it the next day saying that because I owe Bank of America they could not keep me as a customer.  So I was like ok and I understood.  But now that my check has cleared and they have collected the money from the bank out of state they are holding on to my monies.  I talked to customer service she stated that after the fraud department get through investigating that they would send me a check and it would take up to 60 days.  I told them I don’t understand their policy it did not take 60 days for them to close my account.  Any idiot would have called the bank to see if the funds were available before taking a deposit of a lump sum.  Not only have that why can’t the branch give me a cashier’s checked why do I
have to wait for corporate to cut me a check.  So I went to a Branch and talked to a manager who could not get a hold of nobody in higher management in the fraud department to see if they would allow him to cut me a check from his branch.  So he advised me that he will give me a call after lunch time.  I ended up calling him he told me that he had just came back from lunch and he will give me a call.  It is at the close of business and has not heard from him.  This bank sucks and I told them I want my money.  Why do these banks think that they have the right to hold people money?  They don’t want to do business with you so they just give you the run around.  So I asked them how can I pay Bank of America off so I can get me an account if they don’t want to give me my money.  They are still talking about that the check could be a fraud.  How is it a fraud if you have the money from the other bank you idiot.  DO NOT GO TO SUNTRUST THEY ARE A
RIPOFF.

I wish I would have seen these reviews earlier.

They dont deserve the 1 star. 90% of the people I talk to are extremely rude.

Terrible bank. We just opened an account because we came to Florida from Ohio. They mailed our check cards to the wrong address, but kept denying it for 3 weeks.

So, no access to our money. After 7 phone calls, they admitted their mistake and I asked if they could overnight the check cards to us since it was their mistake. They said no. They would reissue new cards and we would have to wait 2-3 weeks again. If we want them faster, we have to pay $25 PER CARD to get them overnighted to us. So, desperate to get access to our money, I paid $25 for one card.

Back home in Ohio, if our bank screwed up, they took care of it. They didn't pass it on to the customer.

Stay away from them and get another bank! US Bank has always been good to us, but they are not in Florida.

I just opened an account with Sunbank 10 days ago--They still have my original deposit on Hold-When I tried to deposit more money they said that would be put on Hold too. I called and waited an hour 3 times to be able to log into my account on line without success-finally they said wait for an e-mail--I am still waiting! As soon as I can I will close my account-they are the worst of the worst banks I have ever had to deal with.

We recently moved to the south and had to switch banks.

We are responsible with our money, had very few issues at our old bank and went into the Suntrust experience pretty naively. We should have done our research.

We had been with them for about two months in total and had deposited about 3-4 paychecks into our checking account when they decided to put a "hold" on our paycheck about two weeks ago without informing us. I had checked our online banking earlier in the day and our deposit had cleared so I went to the grocery store. My card was declined for insufficient funds.

Figuring this was a mistake (luckily we had another form of payment we could use at that time so we didn't have to leave our 200.00 worth of food in the store and walk away ~mortifying), we went home and checked our online account.

They had debited the entire deposit amount out of our account and, upon further investigation by my husband, they had put a hold on the deposit (his paycheck and a check from another account totaling about 3,000.00) for 7 days because it raised a "red flag." Right. One of the checks that I had deposited had already cleared our other account. The other check was a paycheck from RBC ~literally across the street from this particular Suntrust bank branch. We could very well have gone over to RBC, cashed the paycheck and BROUGHT them the cash if we knew this was going to happen. (That is what my husband is going to do today with this paycheck, by the way. I'm pretty sure they can't put "holds" on cash deposits, but you never know. I don't trust them. AT ALL.)

I had never heard of a practice like this, and certainly didn't anticipate this debacle happening. So....I had gone ahead and paid our bills for the month, plus we had automatic debits come out for student loans, car loans, etc.

You can imagine the fees that were accrued. Luckily, my husband can be intimidating and he demanded (he had to DEMAND it because even the branch VP said she couldn't do it) that the hold be taken off and the fees be removed IMMEDIATELY.

They said that the "hold" was for our "protection," which is a load of crap. It put our finances, our reputations and our credit in jeopardy. Upon doing a little more research, we have found that they have done this sort of thing to others we know.

We are currently looking for a new bank and are letting others know what happened to us at Suntrust.

This may apply to all banks, but my experience is with Suntrust.

Tips for dealing with customer services:

1. Before calling, accept the stark fact that any chance of a satisfactory resolution is minimal.

2. That's it really. If any one wishes to add further, please do.

Life solid, bank wobbly.

When dealing with SunTrust Bank I feel like I've walked back into the dark ages. Even their online banking is twenty years behind their competition, but I should have known the first time I tried one of their ATM machines, which was more like watching snails crawl in a tin can.

Having moved to Florida, my wife and I were attempting the tedious process of swithching banks and credit unions for our savings and redirecting our annuities and other automatic deposits to a local bank, when I made the unfortunate mistake of assuming SunTrust was as good as any other local bank. On the bright sunny side of banking, the only good fortune I found, was realizing what a mistake I had made when choosing SunTrust Bank, before I had made arrangements to re-direct our savings and funds. Actually, one of my monthly automatic annuity deposits had already begun going their, but that was easy to change back, compared to having to set up all new accounts somewhere else all over again and move it all back out of SunTrust.

Honestly, the more I learned about SunTrust Bank, the more scared I became at the thought that I was about to trust SunTrust Bank with my money! There were many warning signs I missed upfront that should have tipped me off, such as some SunTrust branch offices I visited, being void of customers and having many empty offices, looking more like a ghost town than a bank lobby.

The first time I tried using one of their branch location ATM machines, I thought their network was down, but soon found out it would never get any better. But it got even worse when I soon realized that unlike most banks, SunTrust Bank routinely was holding my deposits for as long as 8 days, even when the paying bank had paid them the funds a week earlier. I might as well have been dealing with a bank at the North Poll and worse yet, almost every employee at SunTrust Bank I ever came into contact with was so cold with their customer service skills (or lack thereof) that they mifght as well have been living at the North Poll too. I think Suntrust Bank must have published an employee handbook on 101 excuses to give customers on why they can't have their money.

It's simply hard to imagine that a bank such as SunTrust can even exist with a business and customer service culture as poor as Suntrust Bank has, but if you are a macho-sadist and enjoy punishment and rude service, you can certainly trust SunTrust Bank not to disappoint you in that regard.

With all of the banking troubles in our country today, if there is one bank that should be shut down, it's SunTrust Bank. I usually have sympathy for workers and everyone else suffering from the economy, but if I were to pick up tomorrow's newspaper and read that SunTrust Bank had gone out of business and 10,000 employees had lost their jobs there, I'd be cheering, because I'd know the world would have just then become a better place for everyone else.

Good riddance Suntrust Bank ... it's just a matter of time!

Suntrust is the worst bank I have dealt with in my life and I am 55 years old. My husband co- signed a loan with a friend and was informed that if the friend was ever late on a payment that it would be deducted from my husbands account, he asked them to use his savings account which had a little money in it. They did not honor his request, twice they took money out of our joint household expense account which only has enough money to cover the checks that I write for household bills. Between the two of us we had a total of five accounts with Suntrust, they chose to pull money from the only account that did not have enough funds to cover the withdrawal, and charged ridiculous penalty and overdraft fees, not to mention that I was not notified before they did it. I feel that this is unethical and underhanded to do this. I have closed three of our accounts and moved to another bank and will close the other two. We have our business account with them and they charge stupid fees all the time, deposit correction fee of $6.50 if I make a mistake on a deposit, account analysis fee after so many transactions, $6.50 each and if they do this several times each month it gets expensive. I have not been happy with them since they bought the bank that we had been using. They don't care about their customers or our feelings, just what they can screw us out of.
I will never do business with them again.

I've been with suntrust for almost 7 years. I've had a few problems with overdraft fees but those were my own fault for the most part, I was a college student and didn't keep track of my balance. Recently I sold some stocks and had them deposited into my account I'll just give a random figure of $60,000. They were so happy about this and gave me all the time in the world. Then something came up where I had to withdraw about $35,000 from my account. The other day I go to use my checking card and it's declined, I'm freaking out because I thought maybe I had identity theft or something.

So I go into my local branch and they manager said that my card might have been 'compromised' and that I would have recieved information about this if my mailing address was correct. Except that I switched my mailing address a month ago but someone forgot to remove the alert on there not to mail anything to me. So not only did I not get the notice about my card being 'compromised' (which kind of scares me) I didn't get the new card they sent me because it was never sent! The manager was nice about it (most of the tellers are) but she couldn't figure out how to remove the block on my mailing so I could get a new card (a big problem since I pay all my bills automatically using my checkcard utilities, insurance etc). She tells me to call this woman who will be able to help me out with my problem.

I get home call her up and tell her my situation. She then tells me that I have to close my account. I'm flabbergasted, why I ask? She says that she doesn't have to tell me just like I can close my account without giving a reason. She was extremely rude about it, wouldn't give me any explanation about why this would happen to someone except that I have to close my account, and I should have gotten a notice in the mail!!! (Of course I can't get a notice because of the block) So now I only have a few days to setup account somewhere and get all my bill info switched. I couldn't believe how she talked to me and refused to give any hint as to why I'm being forced to close my account.

I haven't had any issues with checks, balance, overdraft in years. The only thing I can think of is that they saw I had put in a large amount of money and after they harassed me about starting a money market account they got mad because I removed a large portion of my holdings with them (even though I had no control over that as I had to take care of something).

Anyway I am disgusted by the way I was treated by this woman and bank and would never recommend Suntrust to any, in fact I am going to try and tell as many people as possible so this kind of thing won't happen to someone else. If my bills don't get paid and my credit gets messed up because of this I am going to be so pissed. Negative 1 star

They are awful...The Branch representatives were great but after that it is all down hill...here is my story...On August 7, 2009, I received a check from a customer for services rendered at the Tax Office where I work. I went to my local branch and deposited the check into my account because I didn’t really need the money and secondly, because I was on my way to work. On August 13, 2009, I was informed via online-because I checked my account to check on the status of my payroll deposit-that the check was returned for whatever reason. I contacted the 800# and asked what could I do about the returned check and was told I needed to wait until the check was returned to the branch to pick up. I had a direct deposit from payroll going into my account so I did not have a balance due on the account.
This weekend I went to make a deposit into my account only to find out that I could not do so because of a ‘no debit status’ on my account. I have called the 800# four times and finally, I was able to speak with someone at my branch this am. I was informed that I was being punished-my account was being closed due to the fact I deposited a bad check into my account-I DID NOT KNOW THE CHECK WAS BAD!!!!! Furthermore, I did not do anything fraudulent-and I am being treated as if I did. I did not write checks on the account-I have written two checks the whole time I have had the account in three months. I do not go to the branch except to make deposits because my time is very limited. I think that this is not fair and to be punished for someone else’s negligence is awful. Not only this, I spoke with the client, Ms. Hill, who did not know at the time but found out later that her account was frozen by the IRS-something she had no control over. I believe this is a total abuse of authority in the Fraud investigation department-because they never took the time to ask a question and find out what actually happened with this deposit.
Then I am told to send a letter from the client or any other correspondence to an Atlanta GA address-US mail! I am not afforded the luxury of a Fax number or Email address to provide my side of the story. And, the person who I send the information to is someone named John Reed. He, fortunately, does not have a direct line that you can speak to him.
I really do not appreciate the fact that I am being mistreated by Suntrust Bank. Fortunate for your company, you have lots of 800#’s where you can get the run around all day long. The branch is wonderful; their customer service is wonderful; and I believe I am more upset because I will not be allowed to deal with them anymore. And, that being because I was told that they are going to close my account-because I shouldn’t have deposited the check-I should have checked to see if it was good. That is what the Customer Service Rep Angela told me while filling out the paperwork.

I have been punished for something I did not do...and they are holding my money, including direct deposits for 6-8 weeks? Where is the justice in any of this? Do they realize I am the VICTIM here?

I wish I had read the information on this website before opening the account :-(

This is the worst bank I have ever done business with, ever. I first closed my account with them several years ago due to the ridiculous fees they imposed for everything. Recently, I needed to close a safe deposit box there. The only key to the box was in a car that was stolen, and as such I had to have the box drilled in to.

The first problem was that SunTrust lost my request, so I drove an hour to Leesburg from DC only to find that we could not do anything until a formal request had been put in.

Next, I found out that we could only use one of their locksmiths and that it would cost $320! This is highway robbery, by any standards. I have called around and no other bank charges this much (a typical cost is about $100). They also can only drill into a box during the week, so I now I have to miss work for this. When I asked how soon we can do this, I was told that too many of the employees will be on vacation in the coming weeks, so I have to wait until the end of the month.

To top it all of, no one I have talked to has been nice or helpful. Do yourself a favor and put your money somewhere else.

I have been with this bank for about a year, and ever since I opened my account I have had problems. It all start when I opened the account with about $1000 in my account and from that point on I would make deposits about once or twice a week. About 2 weeks into having the account they charged me a overdraft fee of $144.00 for no reason. I called them about it and they had no explaination for why they charged me that when over a thousand dollars were in the account. They refunded me the money and didn't apolize for anything. The second incident I had purchased somethings that when through, I know this because a couple days later I checked my account and it had went through. A week later I checked my account and my account is in the negative so I checked my account and they charged me over $250 in overdraft fee of items that all ready went through. I tried calling and explaining and of course no explaination. But this time they tell me I have to pay it but these items have already been charged. You can believe them when they tell you how much is in the account because if you do expect to see overdraft fees. They are to value there customer....NO THEY DO NOT!!! DO NOT BANK HERE THEY WILL TAKE YOUR MONEY!!!

My wife and I are trying close on the sale of our home. We received an offer 3 weeks after we listed it. We accepted the offer in MAY! Closing was supposed to be on June 15th, but got delay because the underwrite let the request for the appraisal sit on her desk for 3 weeks. There was an issue with the appraisal because the appraiser was an idiot, but that wasn't Sun Trust's fault. But we had to deal with the fact that she waited to long to have it done that when there was an issue there was no time to go back and fix it. And now the reappraisal is still sitting on her desk and we are supposed to close tomorrow, but it may be delayed again. So yayy my wife and I get to pay more mortgage, insurance, utilities, etc. etc. while we are living 3 hours away and the people that bought our house have had to change the days they rented a truck because they can't move it because of the stupid cow at Sun Trust won't get off her ass and do something to fix the problem. I will never ever bank with them and I will advocate to everyone that I know to never bank there because it is ridiculous that someone is allowing this type of shotty work to go on there.

I would rate this a big ZERO, but unfortunately I had to click on at least one star. After being with this bank for 15 years (through numerous name changes...go figure) I have had nothing but problems out of this bank for the past 3 months. I recently visted the Arden/Fletcher branch in North Carolina to try to straighten out some problems with my account, and was treated like dirt by the staff and even worse by the manager. He was rude, impatient, and our conversation ended with him telling me that "This conversation is over", and he proceeded to walk out of the office and left me sitting there with no answers to my questions. Anyone who has an account with SunTrust or who is considering opening an account needs to be aware of the changes that are taking place as far as money transfers and deposits are concerned. If you attempt to transfer money from one SunTrust account to another after 10 p.m., the transaction will be pending rather than posting right away like it has done in the past. It seems as if this bank might be struggling and they are coming up with underhanded ways of collecting fees from their customers to cover their loses from customers who are unable or unwilling to pay their debts. They have completely changed their website making it hard for you to track your funds, in an effort (so it seems) to keep you from being able to keep up with what is going in and coming out of your account at a given time. This isn't just a problem that I am having, but a problem that others have said that they are having a problem with. Not only that, but if you try to go to them for help, they treat you as though you have commited a crime and refuse to cooperate with you to straighten out the problem. It's easier for them to keep your money and push you out the door, than it is to sit down with you and help you resolve the problem. The people at the branch I dealt with today were beyond rude!!! I would recommend that no SunTrust customer do any business at the Arden/Fletcher branch if they expect good customer service.

Suntrust bank doesn't even deserve a 1 star... I had a major issue with them... Where do I begin. First off I would like to say I opened up my Suntrust account because they are conveniently close to my home, and job, otherwise I would continue using citibank that has an excellent rapport with me. I deposited money in my account (because again of convenience) to cover some purchases that I needed to make. After making all of my purchases that were pending on my account, I have a purchase come through from an online purchase through sam ash, they debited my wrong account because both of my bank accounts & credit card account are listed on my online profile with them. After noticing this was done in error they credited the funds back to my account. Well Suntrust didn't want to hear my side of the story at all. The money taken out in error caused my account to be overdrafted, and every transaction on my account that was pending including the error and the credit had over draft fees. $200.00 dollars worth... After faxing them a letter that they requested so they could reverse the overdraft fees, they are saying its not a bank error and I would have to pay all of the fees when I should have a credit of $30.00 in the account. If you plan on opening an account with Suntrust I would reconsider they really don't value there customers yet they have all these commercials on television. Oh yea I get it they can afford to spend millions of dollars on commercials because they are stealing there customers that they don't values money!! Wow what a wonderful way to get to the top... NOT!! Citi bank is a good bank, and I have never had a problem with Bank of America either, if this was either one of them I would of been valued as a customer. Good Luck everybody... Keep your money safe, and remember be valued as a customer. There customer service is horrible as well. One rep told me she worked from home. Very salty taste in my mouth!!

I went to a Suntrust Bank with a Power of Attorney (POA) for my Dad in Cameron Vlg, Raleigh, NC. The first sign that the asst manager was clueless was when she said that people usually bring the account-holder with them! Duh - the reason for a POA in the first place is that the account-holder is so disabled, either physically or mentally that they cannot manage their own affairs. In the case of my Dad, he is totally housebound.

Since it was taking so long and I could forsee 10 calls to the operations center, I suggested she make a copy of the POA and I would call her back. She calls me back about 4 hours later and Suntrust does not recognize POAs for IRA accounts. A POA is an all inclusive document that covers types of accounts mentioned and not mentioned. It is a legal document recognized by the State of NC. I think a call to the Attorney General's office is in order. To me, it is kind of like ignoring a court order.

What do they want me to do---drag my poor sick 84 year old father down to their office to do business?

Contrast Wachovia or BB&T or a local institution in my parents home town, Piedmont Federal, who all met me at the door as soon as I walked through with a smile, escorted me right in, and knew exactly what to do.

I have been with SunTrust bank for over 10 years now. I have been severely burned by the m in the past. They posted an $800 as $300 to my checking account and caused all my bill payments to get returned. My credit cards were all put on hold and my bank account was in the negative. Many calls to management and customer service left me with no answers. It took me about 2 weeks to get everything straightened out.

Recently I went to a branch to exchange $2,000 into foreign currency. I went to pick up the currency and I was told that it would be deducted from my account. I went out of the country with my money and when I got back I noticed that the money was still in my checking account.

I went to the bank to ask what the problem was. The woman who helped me at the Arlington, VA branch was so rude and insulting to me, as if I was the person in the wrong. She accused me of intentionally overdrawing the account and using the bank's money to pay bills. When I showed her that I had deposited a check that would cover all the bills I paid (which had not even cleared yet) she had the nerve to ask me if the check was going to clear!

She then showed me the amount of money that was going to be deducted from my account. The total was $10 more than the original amount. When I told her this she became impatient with me and said that this is what they were supposed to charge and that the first time they probably made a mistake. At this point I was infuriated that I was bringing this bank error, which would cost them $2,000 of their money and they had the nerve to take more money than they said they originally would. At this point I brought it to her attention that I was the one helping them out by bringing this to their attention and I had to take time out of my schedule to come to the bank to notify them. She then responded with "we would have found the error eventually." Unbelievable!

I thought I was doing a good thing by letting the bank know that they forgot to take money out of my account. Instead of being thanked for my time and apologizing for the inconvenience I was insulted and treated with great disrespect. The people at this bank have absolutely no respect for their customers.

I was considering taking out a mortgage with this bank but now that I have seen this behavior I will never enter into any sort of long term financial agreement with them. If they can't keep track of their money how are they going to take care of mine?

I give SunTrust a 0, but this won't file unless I give them a 1. I deposited a payroll check and another check from another financial institution to open my bank account all for over 3700.00, to this day my account is till on hold. NOT ONE DIME!! They have locked out my account from online, cannot access it via auto phone.. nothing. Their explaination.... its our policy!! When I deposited the checks they said they would be released once the money was paid from the payer. I contacted my HR dept; the money was deposited from my company's account this past Wed. ... still not available and won't be until next Tuesday. Why... because it is their policy. They are sitting on my money; for What??? Don't know. Manager of the branch I made the deposit will not return phone calls.

I have only been with Suntrust for a few months, but they love to charge fees and do not apologize when they do. I am so angry with them because my employer uses their payroll service and I had requested that my direct depsoit not go into my account and they did it anyway. This was on a Friday, then on Monday they reversed the payroll deposit causing havoc and choas in my account. My acct is now $1541.26 overdrawn and I had made a deposit of cash on that saturday for $600 and they charged me $1100 in fees and I dont see where they paid anything from my $600 deposit. My payroll was $879.43 and with $600 I should have had enough even with the reversal which I feel was just stupid. I am so angry because now they have frozen my other account which I have $600 in and I am stuck with mo money, and still oweing $1500.
Can someone explain how banks can pretty much do what they want.

I think the major point here is that most people are not idiots and know how to balance their check books; however, some of us are experiencing some major economic issues and do not have the financial security we once had. As a small business owner having all my accounts with Suntrust for an extensive length of time, I am amazed at the lack of sympathy that this particular financial institution has. Their online customer service is horrible because it consists of associates that do not read the entire emails and respond with "pull down" generic responses. No personal touch is given unless the email concern is escalated.
Also, as a business owner, money is debited from my account for multiple reasons (payroll, payroll taxes, payroll fees, credit card fees, credit card machine rental, etc) and if my account does go into a negative, I believe I am responsible, but the bank could lessen the penalty. I think the banks should be regulated to process debits from low to high instead of the way they now work or come up with a plan that is not one-sided benefiting the bank. Once a debit (using a pin #) transaction is made to the account, the transaction should not be held in "Pending". It should be debited and finanlized, not lingering around to hit the next day or a week later. I personally am somewhat suspicious of how all debits seem to post when my accounts are at their lowest balances.

Factoid:
People that carry less than $300 in balances at any time,
pay an average of $240 a year in bank fees per year.

Try to keep at least one months salary in your checking at all times.
It is imperative that in this economy you keep at least 3 months income in a savings.

I love Suntrust. They are convenient.
Keep a check register of what you are spending.
Write everything down in a check register or a software program like Quicken Personal or Microsoft Money (my favorite), or even an exell spreadsheet.
These programs also offer budgetting tools, pie charts and graphs that show you where your money is going.
Don't trust any bank - they are all the same.
Never go by available balance.
Go by balance collected or cleared.

I am very dissappointed in Suntrust. They have an agent named Vicki Taylor in FL that refused to return phone calls, and as per lending requirements is required to provide a good faith estimate within 3 days of the application and it was never supplied. 29 emails over a month period and her management finally decides to return my calls after 2 weeks of trying to track them down. They are unethical, less than satisfactory in the department of customer service, and rude.
I don't recommend using them for lending or banking

Suntrust SUX! We have banked with them for over 15 years (American Federal, CCB, now Suntrust). Their policies change and of course for the worse. Suntrust is now charging NSF fees of $35.00 each even if the transactions are listed as pending. I believe they recently introduced this because I haven't encountered this before now. Living pay check to pay check I admit I have used the fact that transactions are in pending to "squeeze" by.
BEWARE! Even if the place where you made the transaction doesn't have their money from Suntrust (hense pending) Suntrust will still charge you for "committing" to pay.
I will look for another bank and one that only charges NSF when/if I spend more money than my current not available balance. ONE STAR IS TOO MUCH!

suntrust bites, I recently opened an account after closeing my account with new generations fcu, they gave me 1500 cash and the rest of my funds verified cashiers check. I decided to go with suntrust from the comercials. So I open a checking and a savings and deposit my verified CASHIERS CHECK. The check goes thru and I called my old bank to make sure that they paid the check out and suntrust palces a hold on it. I call customer service and they send me to loss prevention, they tell me the hold will expire on the 20. The hold time the customer service people are rude to me and they question me as if I stole my money. Then after everything clears and all they never apologized as if it were me who were in the wrong. Now i understand about because it is anew account and they have to make sure they dont take a loss but the level of rudeness was very unnecessary. I feel offended and feel as if I was profiled because of other peoples mistakes and wrong doings. That is not right.

Suntrust also will run the higher checks first and then the lowest ones to maximize NSF fees.  According to the Federal Reserve this is totally legal.  We have been hit with NSF fees on the same night an electronic deposit is made.  However, checks are ran through first and then automatic deposits like payroll process at 2:00am or something.

Contrary to some previous posts, we have never been chronic overdrafters until the economy tanked.  Since then we have had to close retirement accounts to cover bills and have paid well over $1000 in NSF fees to Suntrust.  Recently in the local paper there was a story about a local restaurant that closed and listed Suntrust's bad business practices as a partial reason.  Due ot the downturn in our financial situation, several creditors have offer to reduce interest rates, lower payment, etc.  However when we talked to Suntrust, they actually prefer taking the risk that we would have to file bankruptcy rather than offer assistance. I can not impress upon you the amount of loathing that I feel for this company.

Suntrust says it is business friendly; however, it is NOT. Too many hidden charges and not enough straight answers. Merchant services salesmen mislead as to the charges and lease times for machines. Customer service lied to us as to what time was left on a credit card machine lease and told us to contact them at their contract end to return machine. Found out that lease lasted another year. Support for business was less than zero. A certain VP makes the rounds to small business groups in Washington, DC touting the great services and help with getting loans. However, his talk was just that, and when we asked him for further develop our business plan, he NEVER returned any calls, even after several calls. Best advice for this bank: STAY AWAY.

Suntrust is a joke! I had 6 transactions paid for and hard posted on Monday leaving my current balance at 6.33 and available balance at 5.33 with one gas purchased holding a 1.00 still on the way, so I deposited 30.00 into my account to cover it making my available balance at 35.33 as I checked my account again online after making the deposit! Why the very next day my account is -199. Suntrust manipulated my account reposted the 6 transactions as if they were never paid so that they could take my MONEY that paid for those 6 items for a 140.00 NSF fees leaving me negative and not having the money to pay the charges once paid. I spoke with a branch manager which was trying to explain the crap they were taught but it didn't make sense to her either! So I was told to email her with a letter for her area manager to review!??? But somehow the 5.33 balance I saw on Monday mysteriously disappeared, some how they never saw any such thing in my account showing I had a 5.33 balance, because if they had that means those items had been paid for!!!!!!

Tip: Always review the desposit agreement and the fee schedule before opening an account with any bank. When you sign your signature card for the account that allows you to write checks, etc. That also binds you to the agreement. So basically you are agreeing to something that you allegedly read over. READ THE FINE PRINT FIRST!

There needs to be more public education on how to organize, save, and manage money. I'll be honest, I use to work for the company but I don't any more. The company is great! They take great efforts in training, retaining, and helping their employees excell. Life took me somewhere else, but I hope I can always be a SunTrust customer. I know how they work internally and I know where they're interests lay. The bank has fees just like any other.

As far as Birtt38122's post -- here is how the bank works (as most banks do):
When you use your debit card all transactions, except for a few exceptions, will show up as "pending" transactions. These transactions are deducted from you avaliable balance. So, number one rule...always look at your available balance! The exception, as mentioned earlier, is when you buy gas or eat at a restraunt -- these transactions may not be reflected 100% accurately because the tip has to be processed later when the restraunt submits the amount or the gas station to release the total amount spent. Most of the time if there is a discrepency on what is showing pending and what acutally posts to your account it is a processing issue with the merchant. So, number two rule: always keep track with what you actually spend! Also, checks do not go through a "pending" status. So, if you wrote checks you should be subtracting that from your available balance. Lastly, if your available balance is negative...THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU ARE NEGATIVE nor does it mean that you have already received overdraft fee(s)! If you can make a cash deposit before 4pm you can usually prevent any fees.
I hope this information is helpful.

Suntrust is horrible. I am giving them NO Stars. Ok, had to give them one, but, I really don't want to. My problem with them came when I used the wrong card to get gasoline. I got an NSF. No big deal, I was wrong, they were right. So, payday wasn't until 10 days, so I contact them, let them know when I get paid, and that I would pay the $9.00 and the $35.00 in 10 days. So, what do they do, they charge me another $35! Hello????? $70 in overdraft charges for a $9 overdraft, which I already made arrangements to pay? I contacted them again, asking them if they would reverse the 2nd fee. Will see what they say. If they don't, I will be closing my account, which I have had for over 6 years. I'm going to keep my money in a jar in my kitchen cabinet. No, not really. I have another account with another bank that is related to my work, so, I'll be using them, and them alone.

Why do you spend more money then you have? All banks will charge you fees if you overdraft your account. If you get a fee refund one time do not expect it again for a long time! I get so tired of hearing how you're stealing my money! Well guess what! You spent more then you had! Get real! You need to live within your means! Your, I want it now thinking is what has gotten this country into a fiscal mess! So stop complaining and take responsibility for your actions!

You complain about poor customer service, well good customer service sometimes means saying no. Just because you did not get what you want, you cry and feel mistreated. This is not the case. You are a grown up… act like one and stop spending and start saving. You complain because you have no money to feed your children, but you went and spent 58.60 at your local drinking hole! Think People! Get yourself a check register and write down everything you spend your money on. I am your banker, but you need to learn some basic math and start living on a budget!

Now stop crying and get up and rethink your fiscal responsibilities. Do you really need 300 channels on your tele? Do you really need to go out to eat four times a week? Do you really need all the spa treatments? Or do you need to feed your kids and pay your rent?

Think about it…. Pay yourself by saving something! Every time you pay a bill off, think of it as giving your self a raise. Every fee you do not get, think of it as a raise. Cut your cable bill in half it’s a raise! Example… you spend 75.00 a month on cable and 150.00 dinking at your local bar and night club. This is 2700.00 a year. Now, cut the cable in ½ and the drinking in ½ and you will have given yourself a $1350.00 raise! Wow… now this is 112.50 a month you now have to save for rainy days and folks it’s raining!

Easier said then done? No, YOU have to make the decision to live within your means!

Now go forth and crying about this that and the other and take responsibility for yourself! Oh, posted dated checks are a myth.

I never really had a problem with suntrust until recently. Alot of these people are right, they will rob you with all these ridiculous overdraft fees. They recently canceled my savings account without me knowing. Just today I logged onto my online banking account and found that my savings account was gone, as in was not listed under my name whatsoever. It didn't have money in it, so I thought it should at least show that there is $0.00, but instead my account was completely unlisted. Since I share this account with my mother, I thought she canceled the account for some odd reason, however upon informing her about it, she told me she did not do such a thing. I called the 1-800 number listed online and they said since the account was confidential, they could not help me. Which I find is BULLCRAP because I called them this weekend about an overdraft that I had on my checkings account and they walked me through every single transaction I made with my debit card. So don't tell me you can't tell me what you did to my savings account. I give Suntrust a rating of -5

Sorry to read all the horrible reviews of SunTrust, I've had nothing but positive experiences. When I moved to GA, I went to various local banks trying to figure out where to put my money. The customer service was top-notch, and they set me up with free checking in a matter of minutes. Even gave me a $50 gift card for opening it.

Overtime, I've opened an IRA and a savings account, and went to them for a Mortgage. They not only beat the Good Faith Estimate from another lender, but gave me lenderpaid PMI and a monthly rate I can actually afford. The loan officer was amazing and pulled a million strings to help my closing actually CLOSE when the seller (another bank) didn't get paperwork in on time.

I've called them numerous times about questions, and I've always had quick answers. Once I got my mortgage, they upgraded my checking account to interest-bearing with a bunch of other perks. I saw a $14 monthly "maintance fee" on my statement, which was immediately removed when I called and complained.

I like the fact that they know me by name, they've given me a free lock box, free checks, no fees, and even a platinum card with a 0% rate for a year - including transfers.

Perhaps they've made big changes since the last reviews, which is a good thing. But the key is: actually have money in your account to pay the checks you write. Setup your savings as overdraft protection just in case. And keep an eye on your statements, banks do make mistakes.

Some of you may have read my post from months ago, how SunTrust refused to change my parents CDs to joint ownership with me, despite my parents being terminally ill.  And, despite the fact that 11 other banks in which my parents had money agreed to do this.
Here's the latest-both of my parents have passed away.  I had attempted to do a short form of probate-but it required me to list on the forms the CD numbers and current balances.  I went toSunTrust to get this information.  I had my parents death certificates, my ID (of course), and the Probate filing signed by the Court Clerk, but not yet filed.  And, I was actually joint with my parents on a checking account there, which they had no problem letting me close two weeks earlier.  So it wasn't like I was soemone walking in off of the street-they knew me.  Keep in mind I did not want to actually do anything with the CDs-I just needed to list them on the probate form.  Can you guess what happened?

That's right.  Suntrust refused to give me the info.  They told me, and I quote, "you will have to subpeona it".

It is amazing to me that this bank treats people this way.  Every other bank that my parents have had money in has bent over backwards to help me settle the estate.

Don't bank at Suntrust.  It's simply not worth it.
