 | jomosima (0) 08/06/2008 | SunTrust explains to you the overdraft fees when you open an account and if you wrote a check or did a debit they are not mind readers and do not know what you spend or what checks you write They only know what has cleared your account there for allowing you to withdraw money you say you dont have.Balance your check book daily and spend what you have ...If you overdraw your account you will be charged regardless of where you bank but SunTrust will generally pay the item and charge you a fee ,other banks charge you a fee and send the items back unpaid resulting in a charge from the company the item is payable to.Suntrust also states unless its a bank error fees will not be waived read the new account material given to you by the financial institute you open your account with .As for placing holds financial institutes will receive notice from the other financial institute that the dollar amount they debit from your account is for an item that is going to be returned unpaid, this protects loss of monies to all parties involved. This also prevents check fraud and other fraudulent activity resulting in loss to financial institutes. Also you are given a letter about the hold if this is not acceptable to you ,you can always ask for the check back to take it and have it cashed at the bank it is drawn on and deposit cash into your account.

 | MrsNicholson (0) 07/31/2008 | First off I have to say I balance my checkbook daily, I keep records on how much money I have and do not blame the bank for my faults if it occurs. The customer service at SunTrust is absolutely horrible. My husband and I just moved and decided to switch to SunTrust because their cut off time is later. The Rep. who signed us up told me 6pm Mon-Friday. I went to make a deposit one day and it did not clear that evening. I called and asked why and was told the cut off time was 4pm. I was annoyed that I was told different, so I called the local branch and actually spoke to the lady who signed us up, she said and I quote "You just were not listening the cut off time is 5 o'clock". I told her what their 800 number told me and she said no, it's 5 o'clock. I was never given the benefit of the doubt that someone at that bank might actually have told me wrong, and on top of all of that I was told THREE different cut off times. And then to go back when I opened the acct. we signed up for the business checking with FREE checks. A week later? I was charged for checks. I called the 800 number and the person on the other end would not even hear me out when I tried to explain, she said the first set I was given at sign up was free not the rest. Which was wrong, I pulled up the info. on the acct myself and called BACK to get someone else who would finally just listen to me and realized I was right, I should never have been charged. So to sum it up, the customer service is HORRIBLE they will not listen to you at all. I am happy to go back to a bank that has a cut off of 2 o'clock just so I don't have to deal with them.

 | ignoranceisdumb (0) 07/24/2008 | After reading most of these posts, it seems like most people should be mad at themselves rather than at SunTrust. I have worked in the financial industry for awhile and I'll enlighten some of you that wonder about how things work with all banks. Note: I DO NOT work for SunTrust. 1) When you sign up for a checking account at any bank, you have access to find out what the overdraft fees are along with other fees charged. Some of the posts on this web site are unbelieveable. Some say that they barely withdrew more than they had in their account and they're mad they were charged an overdraft fee. That doesn't even make logical sense. The question here is not by how much. It's if you DID overdraft or not. If YOU took more responsibility for your own finances than expecting a bank to do it, you'd be a lot better off.
2) Account closure fees. I mean, come on. You complain about having to pay the fees but all banks have them. You can't really complain about this. How else does the bank pay for things? There have to be fees for the bank to function. Everyone is looking for free things. NOTHING is free. Free things don't work. That's capitalism.
3) It's too bad there aren't people on here saying the good things about banks. Things like they keep us from having to keep our money in the mattress. They also make it possible for us to buy things that would normally be waaaaay out of our range like a house.
All in all, you really shouldn't put down one bank over another. They are all pretty much the same and provide services that are necessary to lead a fruitful financial life.

 | riac (0) 07/21/2008 | I was a contractor with Sun Trust Mortgage helping them move in Washington state.
At first we thought they were nice and they brought no dissatisfaction to us while there.
But after the move they gave a company report that was essentially a 'hit piece' attacking us, exaggerating bad and saying NOTHING good-
They did not show gratitude, or compassion, or try to see good.
Their only goal seemed to get out of paying of some of the hours.
We took special care to save their equipment from being damaged so they wouldn't lose any business time.
This shows the some of the kind of people they have working there / managing there.

 | angrybusiness (0) 07/08/2008 | had suntrust for 6 years. first year, no holds on deposited checks. now, 6 years later, they can debit a deposit if it doesn't clear in 3 business days, but 5 business days later, and commercial deposit (local bank) still not clear.
Run, do not walk, run and get your money out. last 2 years, suntrust had been trying to be the worst bank in the country.

 | guru20 (0) 07/01/2008 |  Somehow the ATM allowed me to withdraw MORE FUNDS THAN I HAD in the bank (due to a late processing of a check I had written several weeks prior);
in addition, this occurred WHILE I had a $2500 direct deposit coming through and being processed.
So, the end result? I go in debt $50 because of an ATM transaction that should not have even gone through, and have to pay $35 on top of that?? I politely emailed and explained the situation and requested that they waive the NSF; their response wasn't even a "yes" or "no", but instead a FAQ of how I can get an overdraft protection line by depositing a bunch of money in another account, or getting a home equity line (I DO NOT OWN A HOME)
So, basically, they are useless. If you want a great bank, go with ING Direct. I will be transferring all of my Suntrust stuff to them (only drawback is: they are an online bank; no branches. But free ATM use, easy and good website, 4%-5% interest on all accounts with any balance and no fees and no minimums, as well as an included free overdraft line of credit with no fees, at about 10% interest if you use it. Awesome!)

 | smsgeorge (0) 04/18/2008 | I wish I had checked this site before I opened an account for my college student. As stated before, Suntrust's policy of charging overdrafts (of $35.00 now)as soon as something is pending. We experienced the same death spiral of charges. The bottom line is, a 19 year old student deposited $350 over 15 days, spent $165 AND INCURRED $420 WORTH OF FEES. Horrible customer service, no help and no refunds. AND BY THE WAY, the 1st bank fee for "unavailable funds" was the item that overdrew the account. AVOID this bank.

 | JDPaschal (0) 03/14/2008 | Suntrust will ROB you. I had a money market account with them. I made the mistake of just keeping the minimum balance. They, not me, ordered checks for that account. The checks did not cost much. Just $5.00, but it was enough to lower my balance below the min. balance. They then charged a round of $20.00 fees. I tried to prevent being charged twice for the same thing by IMMEDIATELY putting money back into the account so that it has the min. balance, but that did not work. I argued with them that this was a transaction that I did not initiate and that THEY were the reason my account balance went under. They NEVER re-imbursed me for this.
The second time I've been upset with Suntrust is when I asked another bank account to do an ACH transaction from my checking account. Suntrust "doubled" the transaction and I did not have enough money to cover all the charges, and thus, got overdraft fees. I argued to customer service again that I only asked the other bank to make only one transaction and they blamed the other bank for making the mistake.
They did not re-imburse me for the overdraft fees that was done in error.
The third incident:
Suntrust adds up all my transactions for one week and subtracts it from my beginning monthly balance. I went under only $2.50. If they set up my overdraft protection that I initially asked for, then I would have only payed $10.00 in overdraft fees. They would have deducted the excess amount from my savings account. The checking account wasn't set up to have the overdraft protection and I wound up paying a total of $140.00 in overdraft fees. It should have been only $35.00. Suntrust prematurely charged me an overdraft fee BEFORE my account balance went down to $0.00. Since they charged me that fee before it went under, I wound up deeper in the hole you see.
CUSTOMERS BEWARE. SUNTRUST WILL LOOK FOR WAYS TO GET YOUR MONEY AND WILL NOT RE-IMBURSE YOU FOR THEIR MISTAKES. THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE IS INDIFFERENT TO THEIR CUSTOMERS.
THIS BANK DOES NOT RATE ANY STARS.

 | Wilson321 (0) 02/10/2008 | SunTrust does not know the meaning of customer service - they make mistakes, they are proven to be their error and they still do nothing to make it right for the customer. SunTrust has proven to be an arrogant, self righteous banking institution who can not be trusted to do right by their clients.

 | justjanet (0) 11/29/2007 | A++ for this bank. I am dumb founded at the comments people are posting here! Just because you don't know how to balance a check book you want to blame the bank. First all, this bank does NOT hold a check longer than 5 days (IT IS A REGULATION), I think you mistaken it for Bank of America!
2nd, if you charge something using your debit card, the amount goes into "memo" & YOU WILL be charged an NSF fee as your didn't have funds available... yes, your overdraft fee appears first 'cause your item was "pending".. bottom line if you don't have the funds, don't use your card!!! I agree, the fees are HIGH... BUT SO ARE ALL BANKS!! NOT JUST SUNTRUST!!
3rd, ALL CASH DEPOSITS are available IMMEDIATELY!!! ALWAYS!! This bank also turns over at 5pm.. not 2 like most banks. Also if you deposit a "Suntrust check" it will clear the next day, as long as the funds are available in the account the funds are being pulled from! Again.. against regulation to hold a check for a MONTH!! NEVER HAPPENED!!! All new accounts (under 6 months) have a reg CC hold (again regulation).
4th - After closing your account & you owed money, it's obvious that you had other items outstanding... which was probably returned, never paid & the added USF.
5th - As far as a check not being cash because the check # was already cashed... TRUE! If you have a person go into a bank to "cash" a check it can't be done if that ck# was already used!! It will work for your online payment because it's an electronic payment! And when a check is "altered" it can be refused! Since it was your own check, who knows.. maybe the teller was NEW!!
***FLORIDA IS THE #1 STATE FOR CHECK FRAUD*** Know who takes the lost for bad checks??? The teller!!
***Gift Cards... I've never heard of ordering gift cards. You simply go INTO the branch and purchase the giftcard!
***Bottom line.. I've dealt with a lot of banks.. so far SUNTRUST is the best! Bank of America, hate to say is the WORST!!

Never told me that when I deposit it, therefore after a period of two weeks (which is the usual amt of time needed for a check to clear) I started writing out checks (I have school fees). 15 checks and $525 over draft fee later, I finally rec'd a letter.

 | dereklanem (0) 08/31/2007 | Please, do yourself a favor and do not deal with Suntrust Bank!
I closed my Suntrust accounts in February of 2007 because I was already very dissatisfied with the products and services they provide. In March I received a notice indicating that I owed $48.95 because a $16.95 draft was paid from my closed account which incurred a $32 service fee. I again verified that my accounts were closed and all drafts were stopped. I paid the $48.95 just so I would not have to deal with suntrust anymore. Later that month I received a statement indicating that I owed $80.95 for that same draft and 2 NSF fees; again I contacted the bank and paid the $80.95. April, May, June & July I received the same statement saying I owed $80.95. I contacted the bank each month and was told that the account was closed and there was a $0 balance; they could not explain why I continued to receive the notices.
Finally on 08/30/07, I received a FINAL NOTICE from the recovery and retention dept at suntrust saying my account was charged off and that if I didn't pay $110.95 (they added another $30) they would report my account as "closed unsatisfactorily".
The branch is unwilling to help me to resolve this issue, saying I must pay the $110.95. I do not know what to do at this point.
Their customer service and recordkeeping are completely unacceptable.

| You are not going to believe this . We cut a check to pay for a police officer for his service on our Sunday Service. He went to cash his check, the teller said his check number was cashed and they can not do the duplicate payment on the same check number . We called Suntrust and after 3 days , yes, 3 days of research, they said there is no such check number in the system, the officer welcome to go back and cash his check . In the very same month, we received bank statement, guess what ? they paid Verizon online twice on the same check number . We cut one check to pay our Verizon Onlne bill, it was deducted twice with same amount, same check number . It take me much longer than normal to do bank reconciliation if it from Suntrust . They make mistake almost every month . That was business account Talking about personal account: I went to cash a check for $ 32.00 payable to Han Le who is me, after go thru all the question and present all the proper IDs , they refused to cash that check because there is different ink used in the check, the amount was written in the dark black color and the name is in the light black color . Even they both in black ink. I felt like the teller have nothing to do with the ink issue but the color of my skin . I even hold a checking account with Suntrust and it carried a balance of 5,000 dollars at that time. I would like to have an explanation from any Suntrust Officers . Please email me at lynnheo@yahoo.com . If you have a nerve to say you really are a bad bank . |

 | standardten55 (0) 01/19/2007 | I have to say that Suntrust is one of the worst banks I have ever banked with. For a while I had been doing perfectly fine with them, but I somehow got an excessive withdrawl fee. Since according to my policy I am given a small amount of fee reversals, I decided to get customer service to remove the fine. I call and I get a woman who to me sounded like she hadn't even gone to highschool. I nicely talked to her, when she suddenly starts to become extremely rude. I decided to go to my bank and talk with a supervisor. He also starts to talk in a very patronizing way, until he sees that I hold a very large account with Suntrust. I was completely shocked that a bank would act like this. Take my advice-Try another bank first.

 | 5untrustworthy (0) 12/22/2006 | Suntrust has terrible service. I recently got a giftcard for my sister. I ordered it on 11-29-06 and still have not recieved it in the mail. Chirstmas is in 3 days. So I tried to cancel the card so I could just get her something else and the say it's corporate policy to charge 15 bucks for a cancellation fee.
The regular service fee for a gift card is $4.95. So if suntrust does a bad job they make $15.00, if they do a good job they make $4.95. Where do you think their motivations lie in this case. Please never ever use suntrust for any reason.

 | diakonos (0) 06/26/2006 | Suntrust has the unfortunate policy of charging overdrafts (of $32.00)
as soon as something is pending. I made a $10.00 charge at 9:30pm
on an account with $7.00. The next morning I transfered $100.00 from
another account. Despite the fact that the $10.00 charge did not post
for 5 business days, I was still given the overdraft fee. This I can
understand a little bit (even if my old bank didn't do this). What is
unfortunate is that the overdraft fee was added to my account BEFORE
I made the $10.00 charge putting my account in the
negative the previous morning and (of course) adding overdraft charges to every
other purchase made that day (none of which would have taken my
account to the negative without the original overdraft fee). All in all, if
you live life paycheck to paycheck, do NOT use this bank.
Also, I am a student and thus get a check from my parents every
semester (for the same amount and from the same bank). Since it is a
check from another state, Suntrust has held every check (not just the first one)
for a total of 18 (eighteen) days.

It's bad enough you have to wait on the check deposits, but why when they have the cash in hand isn't it credited immediately. My bank in Indiana, Homebank, used to, WHY Can't this one! It's totally frustrating. Then I transfered funds from my savings to my checking to avoid any ISF fees and for ONE WHOLE day, 24 hours, the money I had transfered was LOST in their system and I received the ISF fee anyway.. The money was no longer in my savings NOR in my checking.. It was completely inaccessable. Their system seems to be utterly primitive for being in Washington DC, the hub of the world. I can't wait to switch banks!

 | Rater84Rater (0) 02/25/2005 | The worst Bank in Florida. Basically I agree with everyone else that ranked it the worst bank. They are not very professional, I honestly think they arescam artists. They don't reverse charges even it was their fault. For example, I deposited a check for my rent for $300 dollars, but they only credited 200 to my account. When I called customer service, they said it was an entering mistake and it would take a ew days to fix. MEANWHILE my landlord had sent the check in which bounced because I only had the $200 which was supposed to be $300. I was charged $30 insufficient funds. When I told the bank they charged me for their own mistake, they would not reverse the fee which is completely LUDACRIS! Anyways, after 2 1/2 years of a whole bunch of problems like this, I finally closed the account. Steer Clear of this bank!

 | Traelin (0) 05/24/2004 | Oh my God is the first thing that comes to mind. When I relocated to FL, I decided (ignorantly) to open an acct. with a more accessible bank. Little did I know that geopgraphical accessibility does not guarantee mission success, or quality! I'll avoid telling my nightmarish stories, so let me just give you a few reasons to steer clear:
1. Due to the Patriot Act, banks are now more responsible for minimizing identity fraud. Great. Fine. But SunTrust in its most annoying, customer unfriendly manner decides that ANY check you deposit into your acct. (other than the very first one) is held for 10 business days, no exceptions. I forget when this then becomes 5 business days, then 3 business days, etc., but the point being is that for 6 months you better not expect to see a check deposit on-time and in your acct.
2. There is no overdraft protection without acquiring their credit card. Sure, a lot of banks have this, but not all. Why on Earth would you do business with one if it's no good in any other area??
3. Direct Deposits are not always on time. YES, DIRECT DEPOSITS!!! There was an occasion where I was wondering why my acct. was lower than it should be, only to find out that I had been charged $30.00 for insufficient funds. When I called customer service and asked them where my direct deposit was, they said it doesn't always get credited until 9:00 that business day, NOT 12:01am that day like every other bank/credit union I've had.
4. If you get charged $30.00 for unavailable/insufficient funds, don't expect it to be removed as a customer service favor unless you've had the acct. for 1 year. THIS IS TRUE EVEN IF IT WAS THEIR MISTAKE (see number 3 above). You would think that someone who carries the average monthly balance that I carry would call for some courteous treatment, but nope.
5. If you ever find fraudulent/erroneous charges in your acct. via your check card, DO NOT expect SunTrust to help you out in any way with respect to crediting it back. It takes anywhere from 2-4 WEEKS to see this money in your acct. again, even though MBNA and Capital One, major credit card companies, temporarily remove those charges (and any related finance charges) from your acct. until the situation is permanently settled.
Look, I could go on and on. But I do not find it to be ironic that EVERY other person (yes, EVERY other person) that I know that has had a SunTrust acct. has since closed it. Do yourself a favor and join a Credit Union. Eastern Financial, Navy Federal, whatever, just save yourself from this nightmare.
