At the least, he shoud have been banned from the sport for the number of games that would equal a complete season.

What kind of crazy asshole throws a chair at a bunch of people?
bebe23 09/24/2004
This guy is head and shoulders a bigger jerk than the guy who put the bat to the lady in the hotdog costume! I know these baseball players get riled up by rowdy people in the stands, but this guy's behavior is inexcusable! C'mon kick him out the league, for God's sake.
bbutler76 09/21/2004
Jerk may be an understatement and I think he got off light; only being suspended for the rest of this year. He will get sued and lose millions, as he should. I truly do feel sorry for the woman who got hit. She got hit for her husband running off his big mouth. This guy just looks like an asshole. I bet he has already started making plans to spend the money he's going to get off of Frank. So to me, the poor woman's husband and Frank are both jerks. Both bigtime jerks.

Mag, you are one current guy. If you're gonna throw the chair, you must hit the intended target, not his wife. When you miss the loudmouth and hit the wife, lawyers are called, suspensions are discussed, ESPN's ratings go through the roof and the penant races get relegated to page D-2. Suspend him for life, as a message to all less than precisely accurate chair throwers, make your one shot count! UPDATE: OK, seriously, no player can rationalize idiotic behavior like this. Sorry, kid, yer out. BUT: the conduct of certain fans SHOULD be brought to light and made public knowledge, not to offer an excuse to the player, but to begin a rational dialogue about what is over the line regarding fan conduct. Your fifty bucks doesn't and shouldn't buy you carte blanche to ruin the game for everyone else.

What he did was inexcussable and unprofessional. There is no reason whatsoever to attack the fans (unless they come out to the field.) Thinking about it, he is also attacking the people who pay is salary. You can't get away with that. It is like attaking your boss. The only place you can get away attacking your boss is the WWE.

Professional baseball players get paid extremely large salaries because of the fans. Fans allow baseball players like Frank Francisco to play a game for a living. They are what makes the game go round. Fans are not required to sign any waivers saying that they won't taunt any of the opposing team's players. Francisco needed to understand all that before he ever stepped foot on a baseball field. But even if he didn't, one would think that he would understand something of human behavior, and that throwing chairs at others is inappropriate.

I think he did hit the outside corner. Of her nose, that is.
irishgit 09/18/2004
Jeez, I knew he had control problems, but I thought he could hit the outside corner with a chair for Pete's sake.
Strike Zone 09/18/2004
I agree, Frank Francisco should not have thrown the chair. But when you choose to be rowdy fan, you should expect retaliation at any given time. If you watch the video, moments before the chair was thrown, the guy is pumping his fists at the players shining them on. Then when the chair is thrown, the guy moves out of the way like a Punk and it hits his wife instead. We always talk about the players with bad sportsman like conduct or bad attitude. I think its time some fans learn some fan sportsmanship during the game. I don't buy tickets to the lower levels of the Asros games anymore because of the bad language. My kids cant enjoy the game when jerks start yelling obscenities at the players. And what about the fan, the guy is a Battalion Chief for a local Fire Department. If I were a firefighter, I would be ashamed of this guys conduct. Heckling is part of a MLB game, but when you start yelling obscenities, I think thats crossing the line.
magellan 09/14/2004
As a professional athlete making millions of dollars, you just can't physically assault fans in response to verbal abuse. Heckling comes with the territory, and I don't care how nasty the scum bag fans were being - you can't throw a piece of metal at them. I'm sure the lady with the broken nose will be compensated nicely for her pain... Frank Francisco deserves whatever he has coming to him.
