I'm likely wrong here, but it looks like the Hoosier State might be ripe for the Democrats to pick off from the red column this year. Barack Obama has been working hard in this state, opening up campaign offices all over. And it doesn't hurt that Indiana's popular senator (and possible Democratic Veep nominee), Evan Bayh, is campaigning hard for Obama in this state. I still see the GOP winning this, but it would not be a surprise to see Hoosier red become blue in 2008.

Spin this how you like, at the end of the day this is a GOP win.

This one could be interesting. Obama plays well in midwestern states with affluent voters, and Indiana has a few. Plus, he's popular in the north west corner which is in the Chicago media market. It was here he broke the back of the Clinton campaign. If he picks Evan Bahy, he may very well take this very conservative state.

Indiana historically votes strongly Republican. I believe the last Democrat to carry the state was LBJ in 1964, so it would take an electoral disaster of mammoth proportions to allow the Democrats a chance in the state. That might change however if the Democrats select Evan Bayh, the popular former Governor and current Senator of state to their ticket. Bayh for VP would be more likely if Hillary is the Democratic candidate though. Usually VP candidates have a hard time making their states competitive, as people usually vote for the head of the ticket. Sometimes the VP candidate doesn't have enough political clout to help the ticket win their home state. For instance, John Kerry hoped in 2004 that John Edwards would help him carry North Carolina and other marginally competitive Southern states like Tennessee and Arkansas, but Edwards wasn't strong enough in the region. But a candidate with a strong name can help the ticket carry their home state. LBJ helped Kennedy carry Texas in 1960. Bayh is one of those candidates that can not only help the Democrats in Indiana, but also in the Midwest.

LBJ was the last Democratic candidate to win in Indiana, and votes for President in 2004 were about 3 out of 5 for Bush. Indiana is a very likely red state.

McCain: believe me this is about as red a state as they get...McCain, but only because Bush isn't running again, the John Birch Society isn't running a candidate, George Wallace is dead, and Dr. Zaius from the Planet of the Apes is indeed over 35 but technically ineligible because he is not human...
