Another Obama state, regardless of the Navy presence. Officers tend to be Democrats anyway.

If this is seriously in play, Obama better piss on the fire and call in the dogs, because the hunt will be over.

McCain will campaign here, but not heartily.

The Republicans have an outside chance here, but really, if Obama is in trouble in Maryland, he's going to be in trouble all over the country.

Maryland is a very Democratic state. There are a few pockets of strong Republican voters in the state, but those are concentrated in the rural areas of the state. There aren't enough votes there to counter Democratic strength in the urban areas of Baltimore. Elections in Maryland are decided in the D.C. and Baltimore suburbs, and those areas trend very heavily Democratic. The last Republican to carry Maryland in a Presidential race was Ronald Reagan in 1984. The only time Republicans win statewide in Maryland is when the Democrats run weak candidates and the national trends favor the party. I just don't see the Republicans doing too well here this time though.

Maryland is geographically split in terms of Democrats versus Republicans. However, the areas with the largest populations, Montgomery County, Prince George's County, and Baltimore City, all strongly favor Democrats. Maryland did have a Republican governor in Bob Ehrlich from 03-07, so the state is not too Democratic that it can't possibly be swayed. However, the odds of a Presidential election going to the Republican candidate in 2008 is not likely. Maryland is also worth just 10 electoral votes.
